In no particular order I see our needs as TE, LG, WLB and DE, the latter two based on the notion that Schwartz runs a more traditional 4-3 defence. If a No1 WR feel into our hands then that position would jump immediately to the top of the list.
Here is my take on the draft and what we might need. Of course whilst parts of this years free agency are weak, you can never predict player cuts. Ignoring press reports on who might be released by the other teams, this is what I would like to see happen.
So here we go ......
R1.9. Sammy Watkins WR - if he "falls" to us, he'd be an instant upgrade. If not I'd trade down and select Eric Ebron TE
R2.33. Austin Serefian Jenkins TE - I know we pick No41 but he's worth moving up for. And yes I would still do this even if we take Ebron in the first, using the extra picks we've acquired. Too many double TE teams have outstanding offences and an Ebron-ASJ would be exceptionally difficult to defend against
R4a. Dakota Dozier LG - the Furman LT has proven he can slide inside and not miss a step
R4b. Ben Garder DE - a run stopper who can also get into the backfield and will keep the opposition 'honest' when defending against Mario
R5. Jordan Tripp WLB - a small school guy who would be much higher if he'd gone to a larger school and only the second Grizzly ever to get invited to the Senior Bowl
R6. Tevin McDonald FS - talent wise he'd go much higher, off-field antics means he won't. If he can keep his nose clean the steal of the draft
R7. Kendall James CB - the Maine Black Bear is a genuine speedster and his college have recently produced NFL capable defensive backs
Now if we do trade down and select Ebron, we'd use the extra pick acquired to take ASJ. In such circumstances, we'd retain our own No.73 selection so what I would do with it is ...
R3.73. DaQuan Jones DT - Schwartz likes a big line, and we need players to rotate with Kyle and Dareus. We also don't know if Dareus will repeat last years performance and be worth resigning.
As for the rest of the off-season whilst I'd love to sign a premier Free Agent I cannot see us doing so, even someone like Rodger Saffold will likely be outside our reach. A true WLB like Jonathan Casillas could be an interesting selection, bringing home local boy Jonathan Starks will allow us to cover possible injury woes with CJ and Fred. Others like Larry English might benefit from playing 4-3 DE rather than an ill-fitting 3-4 OLB.
