Let's say we sign Byrd to a long term deal for $7-8M/yr (might seem like a reasonable contract). Aaron Williams continues to develop and becomes a Pro Bowl caliber SS, and demands Byrd money. Maybe he even learned something from Byrd and holds out? Do we tag him, or do we sign him to a big contract? Either way, we're looking at $15M for the safety positions. The cap money will be even higher.
...we tag Byrd again, and he walks after the season. Then we go through the same thing with Williams. We end up paying close to $10/yr for 1 safety for the next 3 years, then they're both gone!
As crazy as it sounds, we have to hope that Williams doesn't get that good, or at least not that fast!
I think OBD has no choice but to draft a Safety in the first couple of the rounds.
