My observation is that finding a good CB in free agency recently has been more productive then drafting one in the 1st or 2nd round. Last year many of the free agent CB's had excellent years. Brent Grimes, DRC in Denver, Sean Smith in KC, where as as the CB's taken in the 1st round struggled Milner, Xavier Rhodes in Minnesota and I believe Atlanta used a 1st round pick on a CB and they had a bad defense all year. Claiborne in Dallas is still struggling and they traded up 2 years ago to get him.
The situation in Buffalo is a little different. We have 2 starting caliber CB's in Gilmore and Mckelvin and a solid nickle in Robey. It may be difficult to get a quality free agent to come to Buffalo if he knows he may not be a starter. I would like it if we could bring in Sam Shields from GB to compete for a starting spot and who ever doesn't start becomes a much needed depth player and ST's player. I think it might fall heavily on our scouting staff to find a solid CB in rounds 5-7 or as an undrafted free agent. Marcus Cooper of the Chiefs is an example. He was a lte round pick of the 49ers and woumd up contributing a lot for KC.
I am glad we got our to outside CB's through the draft and I thought Donnie Henderson did a fantastic job with our secondary. He got cereer years out of Mckelvin and Aaron Williams and I am 100% confident in Stephon Gilmore's abilities to become an elite CB. Especially if he adds some upper body strength. Just a comparison in messurable's Darrell Revis 5"11 200lbs 4.38/40 Stephon Gilmore 6'1 190lbs 4.38/40. One thing for sure is injuries are going to happen in football and we cannot afford to lose games because of lack of depth. (Justin Rogers)
This is my 1st fan post on this site. I am glad to be a member. I am a very passionate Bills fan and this seems like a great place to learn new things and discuss the Bills.
