The Jags were able to get a 6th rounder for Gabbert and the Dolphins were able to get a 7th rounder for Martin. Since the Saints offered a monster contract for Byrd (which is tangible evidence of the high demand for his services), it is more than reasonable to assume the Saints or another team would have been willing to part with a draft pick as well. Heck, the Saints are aggressively shopping Sproles, who would cost 3.4 mil next year for whatever team gets him, instead of just cutting him. Byrd was handled with gross incompetence. Period. Please don't mention compensatory picks. I understand how compensatory picks work. Whatever compensatory pick the Bills receive, they would have been able to do better via trade. This conclusion is based on a common sense understanding of supply and demand of Byrd's value and the history of players that have been tagged and traded such as Cassell, Price, Jared Allen, etc. The only time guys with this kind of value from competent organizations make it to free agency without a tag is when the team has multiple players of that level and can only use the franchise tag on a single player or its a guy like Ware, who is still under contract and not willing to renegotiate a contract that is overwhelming on a team's cap.
