There have been a lot of haters criticizing Doug Whaley and the coaching staff for picking this guy or that guy without allowing the player to showcase what he can do this season. It seems that some fans wanted to go after a big name and pay out the nose like Buddy Nix did for Mario Williams. Does everyone remember how that turned out? Even with all his hype, the team remained locked in the same record his two seasons with the team. I personally love the way OBD has been handling free agency. They have resigned two of their biggest contributors (Carpenter and Chandler) and picked up people who will have a positive influence on the overall team. Graham will be a major factor on special teams and Rivers will add experienced depth to a thin LB core. I also envision him contributing to special teams. So, it seems as if OBD has made an upgrade in the departments (CB's and LB's) that needed it the most. I also like the signing of Chris Williams. Who can deny he will be a lot better than Legursky for a relatively reasonable price? Not many.
I guess what I am attempting to get at is last year Whaley made some questionable decisions in regards to free agents and they paid off. Manny Lawson was a wonderful acquisition to the edge and Thad Lewis was a good back up QB when the Bills did not have one. I think we should all trust Whaley and Marrone to find those players that allow the whole team to get better. So far they have found gems who were supposedly not worth the signing. (By the way, Hughes is the biggest name to come to mind via a trade).
There is a plan in place and I for one think that Whaley and Marrone know exactly what they are doing. We just have to be patient and see how everything plays out before we begin to say that the season is already lost.
P.S. Letting Byrd go by not paying an additional 1.5 million a year was not a bad non-move. He will be missed but the team will be better for utilizing that money on a string of depth players or solid contributors. Just look at the best teams. They win with a few stars surrounded by an array of role players. Buffalo has some stars in defense already and now they have the money to grab those role players to compliment those Pro Bowlers. Now go out there and get Wilfork and Spikes from New England!!!!
