Bear with me on this winding path of crazy logic. As we move farther along in the offseason we have made some moves, some panned some not so much. The focus has hit on the topic what is Buffalo's Biggest need and how do they address it in the first round? WR (Watkins/Evans), OT(Robinson/Matthews), LB(Mack/Barr), TE (Ebron). Agreed that this is important, with the 9th pick Buffalo has the ability to take a player who can come in and start and make an impact day 1. God how we need this. However I will argue that Non of those players fill the area of our biggest need. We have a strong young receiving core, it will only get better with one of the top WRs, but it won't make or break the group. The OT's represent a new starter at RT but we have bodies there that can play if we miss out. We have our 3 starting LB's on the roster today, the young guys only make them better. TE we could easily get though this season without even adding another body to the mix. NO our biggest need is a DE. Not a superstar pass rusher everyone loves you DE, we don't need the first round can't miss guy (not that I would hate it if Clowney came to us). No we need to find ourselves a Phil Hansen. Do you remember Phil. He was the other guy to Bruce Smith. The one who help shut down the run, who picked up the occasional sack, to closed the edge. This is the guy we need and we should be able to find this type of player in round 4 or 5. Think about it. With the new 4/3 defense we have Mario Williams (our Bruce Smith today). Then we don't really have anyone. Manny Lawson is out of place as a DE, he is more of a true 3/4 OLB. Jerry Hughes is a DE but he is a pass rush specialist, not someone I would want on the field all the time. There you have it. The biggest need a starting DE who is a role player. Please feel free to tell me why I am crazy and wrong, but it seems to me the only HOLE on the roster today. (HOLE defined as we don't have anyone who fits the bill not we can find someone better).
