Bills will not use franchise tag in 2014 - BuffaloBills.com
"The tag had been an option for the Bills to secure S Jairus Byrd or any of five other unrestricted free agents for the 2014 season, but absent long-term deals, the Bills chose not to make use of the tag."
Whaley not closing door on Byrd yet - BuffaloBills.com
"We were very comfortable with the significant offer we made to those guys," said Whaley. "We’ll leave the lines of communication open and we’re still open to anything they come back with or if they come back and accept the deal. We’ll be open with that as well."
Inside The Bills | How Whaley values safety position
"It’s important. I think depending on scheme, in this scheme talking to coach Schwartz safety is going to be important a lot because of the communication and how he sets the back end of the defense and gets all the checks and balances from the sidelines," said Whaley. "It’s an important part, but would it be the top rated piece I would start the defense? No, but it’s in the mix. I think you’d have to go defensive end and corner before you go safety."

Buffalo Bills won’t use franchise tag on Jairus Byrd - Democrat and Chronicle
"Assuming Byrd is through as a Bill, that means the two starting safeties — at least on paper at this stage — are Da’Norris Searcy and Aaron Williams.
