The Bills have not been to the playoffs since they benched Doug Flutie for the playoff game against the Tennessee Titans in 1999. Doug Flutie led the Bills to ten and eleven win seasons and the playoffs in 1998 and 1999. The complaints against Flutie were that he was too small and too much of an improvisor, but he was a tremendous competitor who won three Grey Cups. He had a winning record as an NFL quarterback even though his prime years were in Canada.
Enter Donald Trump. The guy who signed Doug Flutie to his first professional contract. The timing might be a bit late, but could he have a deal to buy the Bills in place to time to draft one of the most exciting college quarterbacks since Flutie?
Johnny Manziel seems a lot like Doug Flutie, too short, but with a good arm and good mobility, better at improvising at the end to win the game than running the regular offense. A flashy exciting player to be sure, but a flashy exciting player with a tremendous drive to win.
Would drafting Johnny Manziel be a small way of saying we should have treated you better Doug Flutie?
