Buffalo's 2014 Pre Draft Visitor Connectionz

The draft is approaching fast! Buffalo's deadline to bring in visitors for the draft passed, and their final list included 29 names. As I discussed in a previous article, the Bills have had a tendency to tip their hand using the pre-draft visitor list, drafting visitors, teammates of visitors, and people who play the same position as the players who visited. Now that we know Buffalo's full list of visitors, let's put together the draft board. Grab your tinfoil hat!

Buffalo's Pre-Draft Visitors

Ross Cockrell CB Duke 5110 194 4.56
Kyle Fuller CB Virginia Tech 5116 190 4.49
Phillip Gaines CB Rice 6003 193 4.38
Bradley Roby CB Ohio State 5110 194 4.39

Looking at the list, we can immediately guess at two things - the positions Buffalo is keen on, and the players they're targeting in round one. It seems the Bills really want to add a running back, wide receiver, tight end, offensive tackle, linebacker, and cornerback - though they might not add all of them. In the first round, there are a slew of players they could draft who visited the team.

Day 1 Picks (First round):

In the Buddy Nix days, the Bills tended to bring in their eventual first round pick for a draft visit. We don't know if Doug Whaley will do the same, but given the players who have visited it's more likely than not. Here's a table of all of the players I think could potentially be picked in the first round.

Player Pos. College Connectionz (Visit, Teammate, Position)
Jadeveon Clowney DE South Carolina P
Khalil Mack LB Buffalo P, V(?)
Greg Robinson OT Auburn P
Odell Beckham, Jr. WR LSU V
Mike Evans WR Texas A&M V
Cody Latimer WR Indiana V
Sammy Watkins WR Clemson V
Eric Ebron TE North Carolina V
Troy Niklas TE Notre Dame V
Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE Washington V
Cyrus Kouandjio OT Alabama V
Zack Martin OT Notre Dame V
Jake Matthews OT Texas A&M V
C.J. Mosley LB Alabama V
Ryan Shazier LB Ohio State V
Kyle Fuller CB Virginia Tech V
Bradley Roby CB Ohio State V

That's a long list of potential first rounders, but I went on the conservative side. I doubt that Cody Latimer, Troy Niklas, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Cyrus Kouandjio, and Bradley Roby are on Buffalo's first round radar, since they are generally considered day 2 talents, but all 5 players could be potential draft-day surprises in the first round, especially if Buffalo trades down. So if you want to remove them from the list, that's your prerogative.

3 names at the top have been added despite not visiting the team. In the past, Buffalo has elected not to use visits on the tip-top of the draft, and again they did so this year, ignoring the super talented Jadeveon Clowney and Greg Robinson. There's no word on whether Khalil Mack has visited the team either, but as a player from UB he doesn't count as a pre-draft visitor, so it's possible he did in fact visit Buffalo and we didn't hear about it. I think in the case of these top 3 players, we have definitely heard the GM sing praises of their abilities, and Whaley has gone on the record saying he isn't averse to trading up (Clowney often being the subject of those talks). So I'm not counting out any of them yet, though I believe the chances of Buffalo landing one are quite slim.

If you want my pared down, completely unscientific, closest guess list of who Buffalo is going to target on draft day? Here it is:

Jadeveon Clowney, Mike Evans, Sammy Watkins, Jake Matthews, Eric Ebron, Zack Martin, CJ Mosley, Kyle Fuller. I think I put them roughly in order of what my barometer on Buffalo's preferences says.

Day 2 picks (2nd and 3rd round):

Now it starts getting interesting. After the first round, the focus shifts not only to visitors but to their teammates, as well as people who generally play the same position.

Player Pos. College Connectionz (Visit, Teammate, Position)
Carlos Hyde RB Ohio State V
Lache Seastrunk RB Baylor V

Antone Exum CB Virginia Tech T,P

It's really hard to write down a list of 24 names and try to chain yourself to that prediction, but if I'm going to stick with this formula I have to commit. I think that one of the names selected on day two of the draft will come from this list. I'm not going to say both will, but I feel reasonably confident that, as long as the Bills have picks to use on day 2, one will come from this list.

Day 3 picks (4th-7th round):

Of course, once you're onto day 3, picking the picks becomes a total crapshoot. While the Bills did draft a visitor on day 3 in both 2012 and 2013, overall picking these is a very difficult task. Still, I'm going to attempt to put together a nice big list to check against. We'll see if there is a method to my madness in 2 weeks.

Player Pos. College Connectionz (Visit, Teammate, Position)
Terrance Cobb RB Cumberlands V
Jeremy Hill RB LSU V
Jerick McKinnon RB Georgia Southern V
Terrance West RB Towson V
Alfred Blue RB LSU T,P
Ladarius Perkins RB Mississippi State T,P
Ben Malena RB Texas A&M T,P

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif OT McGill V
Charles Siddoway OT Mississippi State V
Jack Mewhort OT Ohio State T,P
Brandon Thomas OT Clemson T,P
Kevin Graf OT USC T,P
Russell Bodine G/C North Carolina T,P
John Urschel G/C Penn State P
Preston Brown LB Louisville V
Lamin Barrow LB LSU T,P
James Gayle DE Virginia Tech T,P
Taylor Hart DE Oregon P
Larry Webster DE/TE Bloomsburg P
Ben Gardner DE Stanford P
Walt Aikens CB Liberty V
Ross Cockrell CB Duke V
Bennett Jackson CB Notre Dame T,P
Rashaad Reynolds CB Oregon State T,P
Lavelle Westbrooks CB Georgia Southern T,P
Victor Hampton CB South Carolina P

Much as it was for the previous table, attempting to say that Buffalo's picks on day 3 will largely come from a list of 32 names is lunacy. But hey, that's what draft season is all about, right? Again, I will be happy if a single pick comes from this list, and if there's more than one I might be onto something.

In conclusion:

There is your Quickdraw board for draft weekend. 68 unique names on which Buffalo can spend its picks. I hope I can get at least 2 correct. The first round should be a gimme, at least, right?

If you were looking at the players on these tables, which combination (one player from table 1, two from table 2, three from table 3) would make you the happiest? Do you think I missed a player?
