Are the Bills on the move?

I suppose the first thing I should do is apologize for the deceptive title. This is not going to be a post about the Bills leaving Buffalo. Rather, this is a case for why the Bills could be—I repeat, could be, not are—positioning themselves to make a bold move to the top of the draft to select an impact player. In order to lay the groundwork for this, let’s back it up a few years. When Buddy Nix took the reins, this team’s roster was largely devoid of talent at all but a few positions. Depth was non-existent. What the team needed was to be purged. Enter Buddy Nix, who did just that over the course of his tenure in Buffalo. Though he never landed his franchise quarterback, I don’t think it can be denied that Nix took significant strides toward fostering competition at a number of positions and added NFL-caliber talent across the board. This isn’t to say he added high-end talent, but upon his departure, the roster was significantly better from top-to-bottom than it was when he came in. Whaley continued the process last year, adding a number of key pieces that will likely contribute for years to come. This process has been furthered in free agency this year, as Whaley took steps to add to a number of positions on both sides of the ball (e.g. LB, OL, CB, WR) and also special teams. All of this is to say that by and large, depth is no longer the concern it was. Rather, where we’re lacking is at the high-end of the talent spectrum. This is one reason people were so upset that Byrd got away. To be sure, the jury is still out on EJ, who just so happens to play the most important position on the field, but one thing that is almost certain is that the Bills brass still believes in EJ, and they surely aren’t ready to give up on him after one year. Given all of this, I think that because of the current state of the roster and the need for high-end talent, Whaley has positioned himself to make a move to get to the top of the draft. The fact that the team is up for sale and could use a marquee player to help fill the stadium doesn’t hurt the argument for moving up, either. Neither does the chatter about the Bills allegedly talking to the Texans at the owners’ meetings. Again, this isn’t saying Whaley will make a move, but I truly believe that he has given himself the option to do so. A couple of teams may well be willing to move back this year given their needs and the quality of the players available at a number of positions. Teams like the Rams at 2 and Oakland at 5 come to mind. In any event, I think it is fun to think about, and I don’t believe it is out of the realm of possibilities. What do you think? (In the interest of fun, IF something like this were to happen, my thought would be that the move would be to get to the second spot and select Mack or Clowney, given the needs on defense and the depth of the receiver class this year.)

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
