For the first time, we had a tie! Both DE Ben Gardner and RB Storm Johnson (both of whom would be decent late picks) received 18% of the vote. To solve this I am posting a 12 hour flash Round 5 between these two players. (in third place was DE Michael Sam (15%)). For a reminder here is Our Mock through four rounds.
The argument for drafting a defensive end is the fact that the Bills lack depth and Jerry Hughes was on the field roughly half the snaps from last season (though that is expected to go up). As for running back, the Bills have two very good backs in Spiller and Jackson, but both could be gone after this year; plus given injuries, it’d be nice to have a young back able to step in without a drop off in performance.
As a side note, in the future, I’ll likely break ties by grabbing the player from the position with the most votes, but for now, I thought it best to leave it up to you. Less than a week until draft day!
RB Storm Johnson – UCF [6-0, 209, 4.54]
Bortles is the biggest name coming out of UCF, but he definitely had help from his star RB; Storm carried the ball 213 times for 1,139 yards (5.4 avg), 14 rushing TDs and 3 receiving TDs. He lacks great speed, but is well rounded physically with 19 bench reps and a 35.5" vertical.
DE Ben Gardner – Stanford [6-4, 277, 4.80]
Gardner could have been a Day 2 prospect had he not had a big injury during this season that has kept him sidelined. He has an ideal build so some team will be willing to jump early for him. He posted in several games this year 19 tackles (7.5 for loss), 4.5 sacks, 8 hurries and a FF.
