Roc around the Mock: 12 o'clock Mock

It's draft day! I have my alcohol supply at the ready and I've been doing vocal warm-ups for the cheering (or booing) I'll be doing come 8:00PM. My keyboard fingers are prepared for some live #HotTakes.

Thanks for sticking with me through the last 11 posts in this series (as well as the various Draft Q&A's over the past few months). It's been a fun time, and I've learned quite a lot in that time (seriously, I'm not just giving out info here, I'm learning too).

Today I'll share my final Top 150, which I updated over the last day. I'll also repost the Buffalo Bills Connectionz so they can be referenced (hopefully for good, and not because I look like an idiot) this weekend. I'll share the general impression I have of Buffalo's draft strategy, and I'll make one more mock draft as my second attempt to pinpoint what Buffalo is doing.

DanRoc's Buffalo Bills #HotTakes

It should be noted that I have absolutely zero "connectionz" of my own to Buffalo's front office.

That being said, I predicted the trade down with St. Louis last year, as well as the drafting of Robert Woods in the second round. So I have a track record!

  • At least three of the players Buffalo picks will come from the above lists of "connectionz."
  • Buffalo's first pick will come from the list of Day 1 "connectionz."
  • Doug Whaley's favorite player in the draft is Jadeveon Clowney, and if he can get a reasonable offer to trade up to #1 (which will probably include next year's first round pick), he will do it.
  • Doug Whaley's second favorite player in the draft is Mike Evans, and he is willing to trade up into the 4-6 range of picks to select Evans. The sticking point is that Whaley wants to hold onto his second round pick.
  • Khalil Mack and Sammy Watkins are both excellent players, but they don't perfectly fit Buffalo's needs (Mack being a best fit as a 3-4 OLB and Watkins being 6'1") so Buffalo won't trade up to the top 4 picks to draft one of them.
  • The Bills, if they can't get Clowney or Evans, really want a right tackle. They consider the need at right tackle to be something that will hold back the offense if it isn't fixed. Jake Matthews is their favorite player who could handle that. I don't know if they are willing to trade up for him.
  • If Buffalo does not trade up and Matthews is off the board, Zack Martin is their target. Eric Ebron is someone they're keeping in their back pocket, but I think they've come to a consensus that Mike Evans is the only tall receiving prospect they love enough to take in the top 10.
  • The Bills have floated some potential trade down options between Ebron, CJ Mosley, and Odell Beckham Jr. I don't see them trading down though, with teams likely not buying into Buffalo's claims this time around. And as we've seen, all the pre-draft talk suggests that Buffalo is working the phones to move up.
  • If the Bills don't get a right tackle in round 1, Cyrus Kouandjio is their player of choice in round 2, being very similar to Cordy Glenn.
  • The Bills will only draft a tight end if he is one of the top 4 consensus players in this draft: Eric Ebron, Jace Amaro, Troy Niklas, Austin Seferian-Jenkins. They have plenty of depth pieces behind Scott Chandler and Lee Smith but are interested in getting a big athletic guy. The most likely scenario would be in the second round after Buffalo drafts a right tackle in the first round.
  • Buffalo won't draft a running back until day 3 of the draft, if they draft one at all.
  • Buffalo doesn't perceive their safety need to be an issue as they have in-house options. They might draft a slower cornerback who could convert to safety, but they won't select any pure safeties unless it's their last pick and they're taking a flyer on a guy.

Carnac has spoken.

DanRoc's Final 2014 Mock Draft

Treat this draft and my last mock draft as two separate guesses of the same event. This isn't my "more accurate" guess, it's just another speculation.

1. Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame

If Jake Matthews is available, he's the pick. Buffalo considers their RT need to be quite significant, and they believe Martin has shown plenty of ability and strength to go with a mean streak that, on the field, outclasses Taylor Lewan. He doesn't have classic size, but neither did Justin Pugh and he held up just fine as the Giants' RT. With 52 career starts and hardly any sacks given up, the track record is clear - Martin is a fine pick for the offensive line.

2. Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington

I feel like if Buffalo gets their tackle in round 1, round 2 is probably a tight end. I've been going with Troy Niklas in most of my drafts, but I have a gut feeling that ASJ might be higher on Buffalo's board, especially if he impressed them with athleticism during a pre-draft workout. There are some motivation concerns, but they already got a high character guy in round 1.

3. Kareem Martin, DE, North Carolina

It's hard to say where Martin will go between his prototypical size and athletic numbers and his unimpressive game tape. He flashed good play but never really had the dominance one would expect when they looked at his Combine workouts, and a lot of that can be chalked up to technique and conditioning. If he makes it to Buffalo in the third round, I don't know how they can pass up on his size/athleticism combo.

4. Rashaad Reynolds, CB, Oregon State

Buffalo is looking for cornerback depth, and they might turn to this athletic corner with average size, good ball skills, and good technique who's just lacking a bit in the straight line speed department.

5. Preston Brown, LB, Louisville

The Bills want an heir apparent to Brandon Spikes, and they brought in this guy for a visit early on in the pre-draft process. He's a stout 2 down linebacker with reasonable athleticism, and has good enough awareness that he might be able to come in on passing downs. Might.

7. Kadeem Edwards, OT/OG, Tennessee State

Buffalo always surprises with at least one pick that's way off of everyone's radar. Michael Jasper, John Potter, Levi Brown, Dustin Hopkins, Johnny White, etc. We haven't heard much talk from Buffalo about their guard situation even though the fans believe there to be a large need. It could be that they are interested in adding one after all - and they might go with an undervalued FCS lineman like Edwards in the process.

The 6'4" 313 pound Edwards has huge 35.5" arms, which lets me project him at guard or tackle, wherever he's comfortable. He's athletic, but has really raw technique and his playing style is more tentative than "run you over." But I could see Buffalo taking the approach of adding an athlete on the offensive line as a personal project for Doug Marrone and his o-line coach. If Edwards pans out, he can be an effective starter at guard or tackle.

That's all folks! In the poll below, decide whether you'd rather have the draft from my previous mock, or this one!
