The Sammy Trade, Bills will Benefit Win or Lose

At first I hated the trade because of the obvious reasons.....what if EJ is not your guy, and you're really bad because of it, you miss out on a really intriguing Quarterback (which I believe is stronger than the last 2 seasons which have looked unimpressive of late in terms of depth class next year depending on who declares of course led by underclassmen Jamies Winston, Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley, which I have seen some people decribe a QB class that could be a "big 3" next year if all 3 declare plus other intriguing guys like Bryce Petty, Kevin Hogan, and other intriguing names like Braxton Miller...

There is a plus side:
-Even if the Bills have a terrible season 5-11 or 6-10, the Bills still have a ton of talent on offense to surround whomever is the quarterback next year in 2015.

They have a deep offensive line, a solid wide reciever group led by Sammy Watkins and great running backs......
Offensively on the line and skill positions, they are stacked accross the board...there is a lot to work with here for any new Quarterback (and offensive coordinator, because lets be honest, if we need to change the QB, we're probably changing the OC along with him, and maybe even the head coach).

The surrounding roster around the QB position the Bills have on offense would be idea for any decent young quarterback to come into.

Plus, there are plenty of options for plan B, i
n case plan A of EJ and Sammy forming a dynamic duo and leading the Bills to the playoffs doesn't work.

They can trade for or sign a young intriguing backup next offseason:
Kirk Cousins, (if he rebounds) or Ryan Mallett, maybe Ryan Nassib or Chase Daniel. Of course we need to see something more from all of them. There really isnt a standout backup to me that says trade for him and make him a starter, but if someone emerges, that could be a route they take.

They can sign a veteran starting UFA : Bryan Hoyer could intrigue if he has a really good year, with Cleveland. If Bryan Hoyer has a great year somehow, then Cleveland has an interesting dilemma. Rarely do good to great QB's come free

Or the most likely scenerio, they can sign or deal for a veteran to buy time and then draft a rookie QB in round 2, bottom of round 1: Carson Palmer is a UFA, maybe Kyle Orton can be traded for and used as a guy to buy time? Maybe Michael Vick has a decent year with the Jets and interests the Bills as a temporary solution to buy time?

There is a possibility that part of the reason why the Bills were so aggressive is that they feel the QB class next year will be strong enough that they can get a guy they like in round 2, or by moving back into round 1 in the 20-32 range? Im sure they have guys they really like and are watching for now. |

And lastly, they can move back into round 1? If the Bills have the assets to move up is another thing, and how far will they be able to move up?

As far as moving up, I do think the Bills have assets to move to collect a mid to late first or to collect assets (2nd round picks) to package into a trade. If Marcel Dareus somehow has a huge Ndamukong Suh/ Geno Atkins type year, he could be that guy the Bills move, of course the receiving team is gambling with his off the field issues. But either way, the Bills have surrounded EJ Manuel, and any future QB with quite a talented offense for this offense and next season.
