You're the Head Coach: Pass Blocking or Run Blocking? (Poll included)

You stand about 6' 5", a former offensive lineman in the NFL. You've spent your entire life engaged in the game of football in some shape or fashion, a former offensive line coach among other things. You're Doug Marrone, the Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills. You respect the game but you loathe fighting. And you've had enough.

Out of Time

"Get you're (expletive) together!!", you yell at your team. Another fight had broken out between the offensive and defensive line. You are ticked off. There's no time for this. You still have a ways to go to get ready for the season, time is running short, and you know that you have to win now.

It isn't a mad rush to get ready in some spots. Your first string defense has done exceptionally well defending the run and several position groups have been surprisingly, and extremely, competitive.

The same, unfortunately, cannot be said about your offensive line. Eric Wood has been solid, Seantrel Henderson has played well in place of Cordy Glenn, and the aforementioned Glenn, a stalwart at LT, has returned to practice. But you aren't satisfied with the play elsewhere on the offensive line. You've tried what seems like a million different combinations so far.

With only 14 days left until opening day, what do you emphasize? Pass blocking or run blocking? An added emphasis on pass blocking would ensure that E.J. Manuel is kept as healthy and as upright as possible, giving him a larger opportunity to develop. However, the running game would suffer, placing more pressure on the passing offense to carry the load and allow teams the opportunity to test your protection and your QB. Focusing on run blocking would mean that the offense is in more short yardage situations, allow them to excel in those situations, and reduce the pressure on Manuel. However, it would also leave Manuel much more exposed against the opposing team's pass rush, a less than ideal situation considering that several of his injuries occured when trying to evade a pass rush.

What's the Answer?

You only have the players and time to fix one or the other. What do you choose? Either way, you better be ready to explain yourself to the media, the fanbase, and the new owner. Good luck. You're going to need it.
