In Defense of Coach

What a rough preseason: 1-4 record with anemic offensive output. Everyone is unhappy and sniping at each other... and that’s just on this board. I only listened to one game because I kept forgetting what time they were on. Guess I was in preseason form, too. And, while I hate to witness the team’s brain trust scrambling around at the last second looking for a backup QB, my core confidence is not shaken that this season will be an improvement on last.

BR has been replete lately with negative comments about Coach Marrone. He’s described by some as verging on a meltdown; others say EJ Manuel is taking shots at him in the press; still others predict his ouster by week 5. I’m not seeing it. Yes, he does have a bit more fire to him than Chan Gailey or Dick Jauron, but that’s a good thing! Since when is it verboten for a coach to yell? If there was going to be a time when the team split at the seams, it would’ve been last year: three green QB’s and a rookie coaching staff.

I, for one, am psyched for the regular season to start. I expect the offense to pound the rock like last year with a slight up-tick in passing numbers. And, as much as the team will live and die with EJ, the D will obviously play a huge role, as well. Losing Alonso and Byrd may have lowered the ceiling, but the player additions and their overall health just about evens things out, IMO.

So, why am I optimistic for improvement? Experience. This cast of characters has played together before. The importance of that can’t be overstated. In a league of young men and massive transitions, it always pays to have stability. We have a tiny bit of that now. Here’s to another season of growth. And, as Mills Lane used to say, "Let’s get it on !!!!"
