2014 Buffalo Bills By The Numbers

This is a look at the 2014 Buffalo Bills using an old gambling system, rating areas of the team. In the seventies, I made quite a few "investments" on Sunday afternoons. I bought a book that was supposed to increase the odds that the "investments" would be good. Let's just say that I no longer make those investments, but still use the system as a way to evaluate a football team. Each area of the football team is graded using a scale of 1-10 where 5 is league average and 10 is Peyton Manning.

THE OFFENSE:

QUARTERBACK: League average being 5 it is hard to give the Bills that grade, so I say 4.

RUNNING BACK: Now they are much better than league average here so I say 8.

OFFENSIVE LINE: Hard on to judge due to injuries and shuffling around. Cordy Glenn increases the grade so I say 6.

RECEIVERS: A lot depends on Sammy Watkins because if Mike Williams is number one the grade goes down, if Watkins is a beast the grade goes up, I say 6.5.

THAT GIVES THE OFFENSE: 24.5/40

THE DEFENSE:

DEFENSIVE LINE: The only thing that keeps this from a 10 is the depth at end, I say 9.

LINEBACKERS: Losing Alonso lowers the grade but Spikes could have a big year so 7.

CORNERBACKS: Better than average pair of starters and solid backups so 7.

SAFETIES: Aaron Williams is a beast and the other spot is not as good, but still solid so 7.5

THAT GIVES THE DEFENSE: 30.5/40

SPECIAL TEAMS: The field goal kicker is well above average but the punter is a question mark, after last year a question on the coverage teams so 6.5.

COACHING: Toughest one to grade because they are so unproven on the offensive side, but the defensive coaching staff is more than solid so 6.

TOTAL: 67/100.

SUMMARY: That number equates to a little better than average team or between 7 and 9 wins, the numbers could change during the year and if they do the 15 years of misery may finally end. The numbers don't lie and they say with a little improvement during the year and no back sliding this could be a fun year. We don't want to think about what happens if some of the numbers go down.
