Ask A Chiefs Fan - Buffalo Grumblings Edition

... and grumbling the Bills should be, coming off not just a loss to the Pats on MNF, but a game where the officiating left much to be desired (imagine that!) ... as we fans now find ourselves entering what's become a seemingly annual ritual: Bills v Chiefs, a pair of AFL originals that have a history dating back over half a century. This year, the stakes are high for both teams, although a loss by either team isn't necessarily a death knell for either team (no matter how much some of us would like to think that every game is a do or die situation). That said, a win is big for whichever team earns it this Sunday.

The Chiefs, returning to Arrowhead Water Stadium after facing the Chargers in San Diego, might be without RB Charcandrick West, who was admirably filling in for the lost-for-the-season Jamaal Charles, meaning that Spencer Ware might get the start. Ware was a pleasant surprise last week, and Chiefs fans hope that between West and Ware, the ground game stays solid. The Chiefs need a good running game, as the aerial assault that some fans were hoping for from Alex Smith, Travis Kelce and Jeremy Maclin simply hasn't materialized. In his defense, Smith is on a streak of 493 Bazillion consecutive throws without an interception, so there's that. Oh, and then there's the Offensive Line, which has at times this season been very offensive, though to be fair it's looked more solid the last few games, which is like saying Jello has a thicker consistency than Miracle Whip.

Playoffs? You're talking PLAYOFFS? I'm not, that's for sure .. but the winner of Sunday's "entertainment event" will be in better shape a week from now than the the non-winner (see? let's make EVERYONE a winner!) and for that to happen for the Chiefs, it's probably going to be on the Defense, which victimized Peyton Manning into retirement (he isn't REALLY going to play next year, I mean come on, man) and had Antonio Gates threatening Philip Rivers (I mean Gates was smokin' mad) ... Eric Berry is back to his old Ninja self, Dontari Poe is leaping tall defensive lines in a single bound, Justin Houston is picking off QB's when he isn't eating them for breakfast, Tamba Hali has been rejuvenated as a Sack Master, Derrick Johnson (the heart and soul) is back from a missed season, Allen Bailey and Jaye Howard are beasts and Marcus Peters might be the best young CB in the game.

For the Chiefs to even be in the playoff picture at this point is a pleasant surprise for most fans (and one incredible shock for some of us) as many fans (and pundits) had written the team off after a 1-5 start. Thing is, the NFL season is a marathon, not a sprint, and if there's one guy who knows about not-sprinting it's Andy Reid. Two years ago Reid came into KC and turned a team around 180 degrees from a miserable 2-14 season. Flash forward and the same not-too-down and not-too-up illustrious leader has kept the team from completely imploding as happened under Romeo Crennel. What will the rest of the season hold? Nobody knows, but whatever it is: win or lose, enjoy it ... laugh, cry, have yourself a time and here's to an injury-free and blown-call free game!
