Why Sammy Watkins draws comparisons to Percy Harvin

Streeter Lecka

The Buffalo Bills have a new No. 1 receiver in town. How will one of the league's fastest offenses utilize the skills of Sammy Watkins?

Say what you want about it being too high a price to move up five spots, or that other players would have been a better "fit" for the Buffalo Bills. Rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins is an offensive weapon that will help the Bills this year. I believe that this is a must win year for the organization. If they lose again, a new owner would use that as an excuse to bring in his own guys - and in my opinion, that could go as high as Russ Brandon's position.

But the front office speculation can wait until the winning and/or the losing starts. What about how Watkins projects onto the field?

Watkins reminds me (and many others) of a slightly bigger version of Percy Harvin - a really dynamic player with the ball in his hands, but one that isn't so much of a true wide receiver, but a receiver/runner hybrid, or as Urban Meyer called it at Florida, the Percy position. Watch the explosiveness and acceleration they both have. Both are also more physical than your average receiver. I love how both guys snatch the ball with their hands.

I've included some GIFs to help illustrate my thoughts about how you can make sure you get the ball in the hands of your playmaker.

Deep ball

The NFL is becoming a space game where you put the ball in your best player's hands where there aren't a lot of big people and dare the other team to stop him. Just having the threat of a guy that can do these things at a top tier level, should hopefully open up the run game and then the deep ball.

Buffalo's offense is starting to look like that team you make in Madden, A mobile quarterback (EJ Manuel), a fast running back (C.J. Spiller), a reliable wide receiver (Robert Woods), and some really fast guys (Watkins, Marquise Goodwin). This is a seriously fast football team that is going to run plays fast and make teams cover the entire field. Make a mistake, and it might cost you points.

Now what matters most is who is holding the controller, so to speak.
