NFL free agency 2014: Dan Carpenter re-signs with Buffalo Bills

In their first move of the 2014 NFL league year, the Buffalo Bills have re-signed kicker Dan Carpenter to an undisclosed deal.

In a move that’s been hinted at by several reporters over the last couple of days, the Buffalo Bills announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed kicker Dan Carpenter. Mike Garofolo of FOX reports that it's a four-year deal worth $9.9 million, with more than $2 million guaranteed.

Carpenter, 28, is coming off a career year that would not have been possible had then-rookie kicker Dustin Hopkins not been injured late in the Bills’ preseason schedule last fall. Only then did the Bills add Carpenter, who made his debut in a Week 1 loss to New England. He went on to make 33 of his 36 field goal tries (as well as all 32 extra points), and was an impressive 4-for-6 on field goal tries of 50 yards or longer (and 10-of-11 between 40-49 yards).

Carpenter is the second kicking specialist the Bills have re-signed this offseason, after bringing back veteran punter Brian Moorman on a one-year deal in January. Moorman does not yet have competition for the punting job, but Carpenter will: Hopkins, a 2013 sixth-round pick out of Florida State, remains on the roster, and will likely compete for the kicking job with Carpenter this summer.

Buffalo likely would have brought Carpenter back earlier this offseason, but a new CBA provision prevented the free agent kicker from speaking with any teams until after the start of free agency. Clearly, Carpenter wanted to be back in Buffalo.
