NFL free agency 2014: Anthony Dixon to visit Buffalo Bills

The Bills are in the market for a short-yardage and goal line back, and that's a role Dixon filled with a good amount of success in San Francisco for four seasons.

Free agent running back Anthony Dixon tweeted on Thursday afternoon that he is en route to Western New York, presumably for a visit with the Buffalo Bills.

Dixon, 26, is a former sixth-round pick out of Mississippi State that spent his first four seasons in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. While there, he was used primarily as a situational back, never carrying the football more than 70 times in a season but scoring eight touchdowns (two in each season).

Buffalo, a team that often struggled for successful solutions in short-yardage situations last season, is likely looking at Dixon for that particular role, as well. The team already has its work cut out trying to fully integrate both Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller into the offense, so it's not likely that Dixon would have more than a short-yardage and goal line role with the Bills, at least in 2014. Both Jackson and Spiller could be free agents next spring, however, so there might be some longer-term appeal for Dixon in Buffalo.

Dixon has already visited with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent, as well.
