NFL free agency 2014: Arthur Moats signs with Pittsburgh Steelers

Moats had lost his starting job for Mike Pettine, and after the Brandon Spikes and Keith Rivers signings, his departure was inevitable.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is reporting that linebacker Arthur Moats has signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Moats, 26, spent his first four seasons with the Buffalo Bills as a sixth-round pick out of James Madison. He played both outside and inside linebacker with the Bills, including most of the 2013 season as a nominal starter on run downs in departed defensive coordinator Mike Pettine's hybrid defense. He played 293 snaps on defense a year ago, putting him at just over 25 percent of the team's total.

The Bills have focused on improving their group of core special teams players this offseason, which will help offset the loss of Moats, who was a special teams mainstay in his four-year career with in Buffalo. Only four current Bills players logged more than Moats' 176 special teams snaps (34.7 percent of total) last season. The team has already upgraded its situation at linebacker, as well, signing Brandon Spikes and Keith Rivers in free agency.

Moats finishes his Bills career having accumulated 141 tackles, 5.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Unless his Bills career resumes again sometime down the line, he'll be remembered here as the guy that broke the NFL-record consecutive games played streak held by quarterback Brett Favre.
