Jairus Byrd: "lines of communication are still open" with Buffalo Bills

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Bills safety Jairus Byrd spoke about the team's decision not to franchise tag him in a conversation with ESPN on Tuesday.

Jairus Byrd, fresh off of yesterday's Buffalo Bills announcement that he won't be franchise tagged this year, made the media rounds at ESPN today, and was asked about his upcoming free agency.

To the surprise of no one, Byrd was cordial in his remarks about the Bills, and left open the possibility that he could return to the club that made him a second-round draft pick in 2009. He also spoke very highly of head coach Doug Marrone, and said that he remains in touch with both Russ Brandon and Doug Whaley.

"I've had one-on-one conversations, phone calls with Doug and Russ. But it's just private conversations and we're all on the same page," Byrd said Tuesday. "There's no hard feelings. And the thing is, from outside, a lot of people don't understand that. The fans, they feel a certain kind of way because they don't understand the whole depths of everything, which is understandable."

Byrd also responded to a series of reports indicating that his camp had turned down a deal that would have paid him $30 million in the first three years of the contract.

"I don't want to get into details, but I will say any time you have something where it's a source, an unnamed source, and the full details of the situation aren't revealed, you can't really believe everything you hear," Byrd said.
