Sammy Watkins injury: rookie WR practices in full on Wednesday

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Things look promising for Bills rookie Sammy Watkins to make his NFL debut, as scheduled, in Week 1 against the Bears - but the team isn't confirming anything yet.

The first injury report of the 2014 season is out for the Buffalo Bills, and five players are on it as the team continued preparations for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.

Rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who missed parts of three preseason games with injured ribs, fully participated in practice on Wednesday, which obviously bodes very well for his chances of playing on Sunday. Bills head coach Doug Marrone would not commit to Watkins' availability (or lack thereof) with two more practices this week, but so far, so good for Buffalo's top wideout.

Three players were listed as limited participants: rookie linebacker Randell Johnson (ankle), top cornerback Stephon Gilmore (groin), and reserve safety Jonathan Meeks (neck). Johnson and Gilmore both missed the Bills' preseason finale a week ago tomorrow, while Meeks has been out since the second preseason game against Carolina. Time will tell if any can play on Sunday; the Bills sort of need Gilmore to be on the field if they have any hope of containing the Bears' enormous wide receivers. (He sounds ready to play.)

Tight end Lee Smith, who was not at team facilities on Monday, missed Wednesday's practice as well. He's dealing with a toe injury, and it's looking less and less likely that he'll be available to play in Chicago.
