Some interesting tidbits from Vic Carucci:

Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher also is high on the Bills’ list of candidates, but at the moment, they are focused on Shanahan, who guided the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl championships in the late 1990s but was fired after last season.

Shanahan is intrigued by the "low-maintenance" situation he would have in Buffalo as opposed to Washington.

The Bills, the source said, are willing to offer whatever salary is necessary to land a high-end candidate such as Shanahan and would give him total control of the football operation, something Wilson has generally been opposed to doing in the past.

Fewell has already starting mixing things up for the Bills - at least as much as an intern coach could be expected to.

Asked to explain his football philosophy, Fewell was concise: "Play like hell and win."

Fewell called the job an "opportunity of a lifetime," but he declined to talk about whether owner Ralph Wilson has indicated that the opportunity could extend beyond 2009.

As to the offense, Fewell plans no major changes. "We are who we are," he said.

Fewell also said that he'll name a starting quarterback for Sunday's game at Jacksonville on Wednesday.
