Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

What's the Diggity? Part 4

For the next post in my series, I am going to make an attempt at addressing the needs that I have suggested exist for our offense, as well as elaborate on why I feel these players are prospects that we should consider. While I recognize it is early, and that there are many, many prospects that we might consider; here a few that could be fits, as well as available, at times when we might select them. This is basically entirely a guesstimate, of whom or where we might take a guy… but on the whole, that type of speculation is all that you are likely to find right now. If nothing else, maybe this gives you a few guys to pay attention to if you plan to watch the NFL Combine. If you don’t… Never fear! I intend to do updated versions (shorter, but hopefully more player specific looks) of this series, for you to consider, and I am sure that Brian and the rest of the crew, will surely provide us a number of articles filled with oodles, upon oodles of prospects. In the meantime: Here are a few guys I myself, might consider for addressing some of our glaring needs.

In order to check out the other parts of this series, part one (QB/Offensive Line) can be read here, part two (RB/TE/FB) here, and part three (Wide Receivers) here. Thanks go out to my fellow Buffalo Rumblings fans for reading my offensive posts (as in post on the offense, not my all too-oft posts that offend), and offering their feedback.

A new idea for our CB position

There has been a lot of talk here on Rumblings of late about the CB position. Most of this seems to have been spurred on by the recent visit of Routt to OBD, and Pete Prisco's recent top 50 FA's story which showed that there is serious depth at the CB position this year.

It seems that most rumblers believe that we can upgrade the position this offseason in free agency and stay cap neutral by cutting several of our higher paid vets (I agree). There are several different ways that I have seen recently on how we should do this. Before we get any further lets put out some facts.

Mel Kiper 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Courtney Upshaw To Buffalo

Photo

ESPN's Mel Kiper has released his latest 2012 NFL Mock Draft, and in it, he's penciled Alabama outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw into the Buffalo Bills' No. 10 overall pick, despite the 3-4 outside linebacker's not being a snug fit for their new 4-3 defense.

Kiper points to last year's Denver Broncos as rationale for predicting Upshaw to Buffalo. Poised to switch from the 3-4 defense to the 4-3 with new coach John Fox, the Broncos still saw fit to draft the top available pass-rusher, 3-4 outside linebacker prospect Von Miller, with the No. 2 overall pick. The idea is that coaches will bend their schemes to fit pass rushers, and that's the idea Kiper is pointing to with Upshaw and Buffalo.

Upshaw is not a snug fit as a 4-3 prospect - he can play some end, but is better suited to be a 3-4 linebacker - but the Bills need a pass rusher, and Upshaw is a pretty good one. This is an idea we discussed back in late January: the Bills are so desperate for pass-rushing help that they shouldn't pass up a good one for a lesser one because of their defensive alignment.

Kiper also calls Upshaw an "energetic talent," says he's in the mold of a "more athletic LaMarr Woodley," and believes he'll be ready to harass opposing quarterbacks as a rookie.

Would You.......

The NFL is always different week to week. Some random thoughts to have the bloggers chew on.

Would you give Randy Moss a chance? If he still has the 4.3 speed I say yes for a 3 year deal for about 12 million. This would be broken down to 1 million in base salaries and 3 million in incentives each season. One Million signing bonus. The last year of the deal would be 500K in salary and 1.5 in incentives.

Would you go after Mario Williams? I say no because he just would cost too much. He is an amazing talent but we cannot afford him.

Would you go after Desean Jackson, Vincent Jackson, or Dwayne Bowe? My gut feeling is go after Vincent and Dwayne. We need at least one of them or both depending on if we get Stevie signed. I could also see us drafting a burner in the draft to develop.

Who would you go after for an offensive tackle? The top ones that I have read about are not to unfamiliar. Jared Gaither and our very own Demetrius Bell. I say we sign Bell before Stevie. Gaither is a only a desperate fall back. The draft is always on option.

In looking at the draft I have looked at the Drafttek online simulator and the laid out an awesome draft for us.
1st - Zach Brown - OLB - UNC
2nd - Andre Branch - DE - Clemson
3rd - A.J. Jenkins - WR - Illinois
4th a - Ladarius Green - TE - Louisiana- Lafayette
4th b - Brock Osweiler - QB - ASU
5th - Omar Bolden - CB - ASU
6th - James Cameron - OT - Mississippi State
7th - DeAngelo Tyson - DT - Georgia

This draft would be great. I do not think Osweiler will go that late but if he did he would be a steal.

Let me know your thoughts.

Buffalo Bills Seeking "Smaller" Linebackers, Says Andra Davis

Photo

Andra Davis hardly played for the Buffalo Bills after losing his spot to rookie Kelvin Sheppard during the 2011 season. He recently spoke with ESPN's Josina Anderson, who tweeted the aging linebacker's comments on his playing future over the weekend - and they included a snippet of what direction the Bills might be heading at the linebacker spot. Davis will be an unrestricted free agent this March, and is not expecting to return.

"I definitely don't plan on retiring, at least not by choice," said the 33-year-old. "I was questioning whether or not to play anymore after I hardly played after Week 6. But the good news is I feel more rested now, and I feel like I still have a lot to offer. In my exit interview they told me they appreciated the way I handled things and that their options are still open, but I think they like smaller linebackers now."

That last seven words are the most interesting part of the quote but hardly surprising.
