Kudos to dmk for originally posting this blog post in the Fanshots section

Some interesting tidbits from Vic Carucci:

Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher also is high on the Bills’ list of candidates, but at the moment, they are focused on Shanahan, who guided the Broncos to back-to-back Super Bowl championships in the late 1990s but was fired after last season.

Shanahan is intrigued by the "low-maintenance" situation he would have in Buffalo as opposed to Washington.

The Bills, the source said, are willing to offer whatever salary is necessary to land a high-end candidate such as Shanahan and would give him total control of the football operation, something Wilson has generally been opposed to doing in the past.

Asked to explain his football philosophy, Fewell was concise: "Play like hell and win."

Fewell called the job an "opportunity of a lifetime," but he declined to talk about whether owner Ralph Wilson has indicated that the opportunity could extend beyond 2009.

As to the offense, Fewell plans no major changes. "We are who we are," he said.

Fewell also said that he'll name a starting quarterback for Sunday's game at Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Tim Graham's AFC East chat: AFC East Redux

Tim Graham's AFC East chat: AFC East Redux

On whether Jairus Byrd will break the rookie INT record:
I'll predict no, but I hope he does. It would be a great story for a team that could use one.

On getting Byrd on the Pro Bowl ballot:
He'll never be on this year's ballot. You have to write him in. When the ballot was put together, he was a backup. The starters were Donte Whitner and Bryan Scott, who are listed on the ballot.

On whether Tom Modrak and the entire scouting department should go:
I'm not a Tom Modrak detractor as much as some others are. I've thought he's done well on many picks. Keep in mind that while he puts together the scouting reports, others in the organization have significant influence on the picks. Former GM Marv Levy is the one who wanted Donte Whitner, for instance.

On Chris Johnson breaking the single game rushing record this weekend:
This would be the game for it. The Bills are putrid against the run, and Johnson is on his way to finishing the season as the rushing leader with the second-highest average in NFL history -- behing Beattie Feathers.

On stacking the box to make Vince Young beat them:
The Bills have tried stacking the box before. But I think that is the best way to beat the Titans.

Most boring press conference, Jauron or Belichik:
Jauron by far. Not only boring, but zero information. Belichick can be insightful if you ask him about X's and O's or history. He only throws up the wall is you ask him about game strategy or to critique a player on his roster.

On the Music City Miracle:
I think the refs did get that one right, but I'm not 100 percent convinced. ... To answer your question, though, I'm a big believer in the butterfly effect. If the Bills win that game, I do think it would have changed the course of history. That Bills team had a shot to get to the Super Bowl. Things would have changed for Wade Phillips, John Butler and Rob Johnson.

(Eric) Wood was my favorite center in the country last year coming out of Louisville. The Bills have turned him into a guard and done a tremendous job. I definitely think he has pro bowl potential. but don't forget about his teammate Andy Levitre, the second round pick who was a left tackle in college and the Bills kicked him inside to guard. The Bills probably have the best pair of young guards in the NFL.
