Buffalo Bills History
The Five Greatest Games Pete Metzelaars Ever Played
The Buffalo Bills have yet to announce that Pete Metzelaars will re-join the team as tight ends coach for the 2012 season, but multiple reports indicate that it's on the way. Metzelaars is by far tops in team history in catches, yards, and touchdowns at the tight end position. Let's take a closer look at Big Pete's five best games in a Bills uniform.
5. October 30, 1994: Buffalo Bills 44, Kansas City Chiefs 10
Metzelaars began the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown catch. He added another six points in the fourth quarter to make it 41-10, and on the day compiled four catches for 33 yards. Those two touchdowns sure look good on a day the Chiefs, led by Joe Montana, turned the ball over five times.
4. November 28, 1993 - Buffalo Bills 7, Kansas City Chiefs 23
While he was held out of the end zone like most of the Bills offense, Metzelaars caught 10 passes for 98 yards as the Bills fell to the Chiefs. Metzelaars accounted for over 38 percent of Buffalo's offensive output in a game that wasn't as close as the score. It was the second time in a month Metzelaars had double digits receptions.
Bills vs. Chargers Classic: 1964 AFL Championship
Each week, Buffalo Rumblings will prepare you for the Buffalo Bills' upcoming opponent by looking back into the history of the series to find a memorable game or moment. The Bills and San Diego Chargers have a long history dating back to the beginning of the American Football League and both of Buffalo's AFL Championships were victories over the Chargers.
The 1964 Buffalo Bills were led former Chargers quarterback Jack Kemp and bruising runner Cookie Gilchrist. The team won their first nine games of the year, but had to win in their final regular season game to clinch the AFL East division title. The offense was a juggernaut, leading the league in points, yards, and yards per play as Gilchrist pounded the defense while Kemp and receiver Elbert Dubenion lit up opposing secondaries. The defense was also stout, pacing the league in points and yards allowed, as well as rushing defense.
Bills vs. Titans Classic: The Comeback
Each week, Buffalo Rumblings will prepare you for the Buffalo Bills' upcoming opponent by looking back into the history of the series to find a memorable game or moment. This week, we look back at one of the most memorable games in Bills history.
For those of you too young to remember, the Tennessee Titans were once the Houston Oilers. During the 1992 season, the Oilers and Bills both had Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Warren Moon and Jim Kelly - and the two teams shared in a rivalry that sprouted during the early '90s.
The Bills and Oilers met in Week 17 of the regular season, with Houston scoring an easy 27-3 victory on their home turf. Kelly was knocked out of the game and the foreseeable playoffs with a knee ligament injury, which meant backup Frank Reich would lead the Bills in their re-match with the Oilers one week later in the Wild Card round at Rich Stadium. (Like today game, this game was not sold out.)
Bills vs. Dolphins Classic: Buffalo Snaps 20-Game Losing Streak
Each week, Buffalo Rumblings will prepare you for the Buffalo Bills' upcoming opponent by looking back into the history of the series to find a memorable game or moment. This week, we look back at the removal of a giant albatross from the Bills' necks.
The Buffalo Bills hold the longest losing streak to a single opponent in NFL history. During the 1970s, Buffalo did not beat the Miami Dolphins. In the season opener of the 1980 season, however, the Bills began a new decade with a statement victory.
Trailing 7-3 going into the fourth quarter, Buffalo scored two touchdowns in the final 3:42 of the game to secure a 17-7 win. Fans stormed the field and tore down the goalposts after the game - a sign that the fans were feeling the losing streak even more than the team itself.
"Stingy" Ralph Wilson didn't care about the vandlaism. "It’s the biggest win this club’s ever had," he commented. "Bigger than the AFL championships. I’ll be happy to buy new goal posts."
Bills vs. Cowboys Classic: Super Bowl Smack Down
Each week, Buffalo Rumblings will prepare you for the Buffalo Bills' upcoming opponent by looking back into the history of the series to find a memorable game or moment. This week, we look back to two games that have defined Buffalo to a generation of NFL fans.
The Buffalo Bills had won back-to-back AFC Championships in 1990 and 1991. They had also lost both Super Bowl appearances to the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. The following season, Buffalo would once again win the AFC Championship, bringing their total to three consecutive titles. Unfortunately, another NFC East team would deny them the big prize, as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Bills in Super Bowls XXVII.
Cookie Gilchrist Suffered Severe Brain Damage, Per Study
Cookie Gilchrist ran harder than anyone in the American Football League. His toughness and tenacity were his strongest assets, but could have caused lifelong damage to the bruising fullback, according to a new report released this weekend.
Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News first had the report from the Sports Legacy Institute at Boston University. According to doctors at the university who studied Gilchrist's brain after his death, he suffered severe brain damage as a result of repeated blows to the head. I can't say it any plainer than Gaughan did, so here's his paragraph:
Researchers there found that Gilchrist had a severe case of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neuro-degenerative disease known to cause cognitive decline and behavioral abnormalities. Gilchrist's disease was in Stage IV, the most advanced category, said Dr. Robert Stern, co-director of the center and professor of neurology and neurosurgery at BU.

Bills vs. Jets Classic: Buffalo's First NFL Playoff Victory
Each week, Buffalo Rumblings will prepare you for the Buffalo Bills' upcoming opponent by looking back into the history of the series to find a memorable game or moment. This week, we look into the surprisingly lackluster history of the Bills-Jets series to find this memorable game.
The history of the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets is rather hit-and-miss. As the New York Post pointed out this week, the two teams have only finished with winning records in the same year four times in 51 seasons. The two teams have only made the playoffs together three times, and only once played in the post-season. That post-season game holds major significance to the Bills franchise, though.
The AFL Bills played in the 1966 AFL Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs for the right to go to Super Bowl I. As we talked about earlier this season, Buffalo lost that game, and the team descended into the cellar of the AFL as their stars aged.
Bills vs. Redskins Classic: Super Bowl XXVI
Each week, Buffalo Rumblings will prepare you for the Buffalo Bills' upcoming opponent by looking back into the history of the series to find a memorable game or moment. This week, we continue our memorable games against the NFC East with another obvious choice featuring the Bills and Redskins.
The 1991 Washington Redskins had both a stellar defense and a high-flying offense, and were led by Joe Gibbs, who had already won two Super Bowls for the Redskins franchise. Their quarterback was Mark Rypien, who led the NFC during the regular season in passing yards (3,564) and touchdown passes (28), and was second in the league in passer rating (97.9).
