Buffalo Bills vs. Dallas Cowboys: Open Game Thread

24 vs 25

FINAL SCORE
Game Preview :: Breaking Down the Cowboys :: Blogging the Boys

Update [2007-10-9 1:38:31 by Brian Galliford]: Only the Buffalo Bills. I don't need to recap it here - you all know what happened. It was an absolutely electric evening at The Ralph, and our young, big-hearted team still found a way to cough up the W. It hurts, but please note the lack of the term "let down" - very little about this performance was a let-down. Initial reactions to come ASAP. Thanks also to everyone stopping by this open thread; thanks, also, to the Cowboys fans who stopped by for acknowledging that this Bills team had your number this week. Give the Patriots hell, guys.

This is it. Monday Night Football is approaching, and with it comes the Bills' stiffest challenge to date in the young 2007 season: beat an undefeated Dallas Cowboys team on a national stage. We've analyzed, we've dissected and we've talked a little trash. It's time to put up or shut up for the young Bills, who will don their throwback uniforms and honor Thurman Thomas during tonight's festivities. Regardless of the outcome of the game, it should be a memorable experience.

I am lucky enough to count myself among the 73,000+ people who will be attending the game at Ralph Wilson Stadium this evening, so I'm leaving this thread in the very capable hands of Dock Ellis, who took care of business in last week's Jets game thread. So if you're looking to leave your thoughts on the game, or - better yet - chat with fellow Bills fans during the game, this is the place to do it. So sit back, enjoy your afternoon/evening and GO BILLS!

Have fun
It's probably going to be the rowdiest crowd in a while.  Hopefully, the actions of some fans won't prevent night games in the near future...

Please bring us some good luck with you Brian.  It would be such an awesome win tonight.

Game
Well, I cannot wait.  Although it is hard to give my 100% optimistic effort when all the press clippings and media talk and everything says the Cowboys will win this game and win this game big.  All I know is I am going to add all I can to make the stadium as loud as possible and hopefully we can stay in it and have a chance come the 4th quarter.  The city, the fans and the organization deserves this game and needs to REPRESENT!

GO BILLS!

Time to MAKE SOME NOISE!

ALL RIGHT, EVERYBODY!!!
Let's get this one.

LET'S GET THIS ONE!!!

Where would you rather be than right here, right now?

19 Minutes to Kickoff!

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 8:13 PM EDT   0 recs

BTW...
I don't know why, but I'm really confident about this.

It's just a feel.

Any special celebration rituals occuring while y'all wait?

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 8:14 PM EDT   0 recs

I am too
though I don't know why.

I have Romo and Barber on my fantasy team, so that might be why, but I really hope not.

The stadium looks great and the crowd sounds totally juiced already.  I really hope we come out smoking.

Injury update.
Ellison's starting, and in a move that y'all know I've been pulling for, George Wilson is getting the start at FS.  I REALLY look forward to seeing what he can do.  He'll be getting some action his way...

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 8:16 PM EDT   0 recs

Wilson starting at FS
this really worries me.  This guy has ZERO experience and the Cowboys have a stud WR and TE that will work the deep middle.  I hope Wilson is up to the challenge because he's going to be tested early and often...
~K

by Kurupt on Oct 8, 2007 8:17 PM EDT   0 recs

Wilson showed tremendous growth...
in his instincts, play-reading, and sheer hitting power and determination in the preseason.  I'm talking play that REALLY stood out.  The guy will make one mistake tonight.  My guess is that he'll more than make up for it.  I think that his closing speed will dwarf Leonard's...

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 8:24 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Anyways, the rest of the inactives...
JP, Peerless, Ashton, Coy, Jim Leonhard, Denney, S Copeland Bryan and LB Kevin Harrison.

The first six are, of course, injured.  As recently as last season, I did not understand the active roster rule.  Now, I surely do...

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 8:19 PM EDT   0 recs

Forget everyone.
Let EVERYBODY cover their butts this next week.

Let's get this done.

Kickoff is imminent.  Announcements are going...

Pressure

Greer is the Man
He's bringing it just like last week, and again, pressure in Romo's grill.

on of the hardest guys to bring down

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:08 PM EDT   0 recs

Good bounce up punt.
We got it at our 7.

Let's go, guys.  We need first downs.   Two, minimally.  Better is points after a long drive.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:10 PM EDT   0 recs

Offense needs to make the plays now
The D has stepped up thus far.  The O needs to respond to the intensity the D is playing with.  They look a little shaky thus far.  Love to see a pump and go, but we gotta get out of our own endzone first....

BIG pass from Trent to Roscoe.
FIRST DOWN!

Tough 3rd and Long.
Big down for Trent.

Check down pass for A-Train comes up short.
Good protection, but seemingly great coverage.

Here comes the MVP.  Cowboys have it at their 30.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:17 PM EDT   0 recs

as I stated before...
the OL needs to step it up. I don't know what the ypg is on your runs, but it's not getting it done.
I am enjoying watching Toni Romo looking like Toni(girl's name) Romo. Keep up the pressure.

by beester on Oct 8, 2007 9:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Split second to late for Schobel.
But a first thrown anyway.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:20 PM EDT   0 recs

Better than I thought
Knew the key would be TOs since the O isn't doing anything of substance, but the pass rush and Run D has been much better than I expected.  It's going to be a long night if that imbalance persists, but what a start.

And the announcers are horrible.

by thetaxman on Oct 8, 2007 9:20 PM EDT   0 recs

McGee gets a nice stop.
Then TO jumps over Greer.  First at out 17.  Then gets a DoG on the boys.  Idiot.  1st and 15.

by beester on Oct 8, 2007 9:23 PM EDT   0 recs

There's Wilson's mistake.
He got our only score, so he's still ahead.  He got rolled off.

Tie game. 7-7.

3rd and eight from their 27.
Timeout.  Second of the half for us.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:36 PM EDT   0 recs

I rewatched that sack in slo-mo...
DEFINITE offsides.  Important, only in that our protection has been measurably better then the steers.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:36 PM EDT   0 recs

After the succesful Royal Screen...
Lynch gets a first!

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:39 PM EDT   0 recs

3rd and Goal from the 5.
Big test, here...

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:41 PM EDT   0 recs

Good long drive.
But we need to settle for a FG attempt...  Good.  We retake the lead.

Also - vitally - we gave the defense a BIG rest.  We're gonna live and die by this balance all year.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:42 PM EDT   0 recs

ugh
we gotta punch that in...

at least we got 3, but that was a nice, long, efficient drive.  edwards will turn those into TD's with time...

HOLY POOP
this is phenomenal.  What a performance out of our young, undermanned D so far.

We are currently crapping in Romo's Corn Flakes and potentially crushing his psyche (and in turn killing my fantasy season, but I'm loving this!), let's keep this going!!!

Get a TD before the half!!!!!

Faded right. No good.
36 Seconds for the steers.  One Timeout Left.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 9:59 PM EDT   0 recs

Poor decision
You either have to go for it (3 is managable) or punt it, not give Dallas a short field for a FG try.

by thetaxman on Oct 8, 2007 10:00 PM EDT   0 recs

agreed...
they should have went for it.  It may have cost us 3 points

McGee has an excellent open field tackle.
They use their last Timeout.  25 seconds

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 10:00 PM EDT   0 recs

No. Rian could have, and should have, made it.
He just missed.  Kick... is good.  17-10.

Halftime.

Uh... any thoughts?

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 10:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Why did we not go for the 4th and 3??
Of course Lindell isn't going to make that. He can't make a big kick to save his life.

If we went for it and didn't get it, those extra 7 yards would have been enough for Dallas to not make that FG.

Oye. After such an inspiring first half by our D, we're only up by one score. We really needed to put points on the board at the end there...

Gotta come out in the 2nd with even more fire.

~K

by Kurupt on Oct 8, 2007 10:05 PM EDT   0 recs

I was wondering the same thing
I just got home from playing softball so I missed what appeared to be a very good first half for the Bills.  The first play I saw was the last INT.  When that 4th and 3 came up I figured "this is the perfect spot to go for it Lindell isn't the guy I want kicking the big 50+ yard field goals.  He doesn't have the kind of leg for the long kicks.  Money from inside 40 but 45 out and the accuracy seems to go away with the need for extra distance.

That 4th and 3 was a good chance to really hurt Dallas.  Instead we miss the field goal, give up field position and it results in 3 for Dallas.

Frustrating stuff.

Well, I'm just saying...
...we can't ASSUME that about Rian.

And this makes DJs decision to go for it at the end of the game against the Titans last year seem much more justified.

A trial run, if you will.

Play hard, play smart.

by Dock Ellis on Oct 8, 2007 10:09 PM EDT   0 recs

yeah we can
I assume he misses every time he steps on the field.  I've never felt so uncomfortable about a player. Even after his good season last year, I was never comfortable.  Having him kick a 55 yarder on MNF was about as ridiculous as it gets.  I would still have rather gone for it and failed that give them the extra 7 yards with the miss.  You don't kick 55 yarders with 50 seconds left in the half.

Wasn't it windier than Chicago last year against Tenn.?

~K

by Kurupt on Oct 8, 2007 10:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Can't help but be impressed
The D has been solid.  You have to expect that Romo will connect with Witten and TO from time to time, but 4 INTs?   Ridiculous.  And they haven't been fluky - there has been pressure in Romo's face all night.

On offense, to be honest, it's about as good as you could expect.  I still maintain you either go for it there or punt it because missing the FG gives the Cowboys an additional 8 yards of field position (and a 53 yarder is obviously not an automatic), but I'll take 17-10.

by thetaxman on Oct 8, 2007 10:09 PM EDT   0 recs

Impressed with the D
but the O hasn't really put it together yet.  We've moved it but haven't even attempted a deep throw or gotten the running game going. Basically, we need to start putting some points on the board with our O.

Let's keep up the pressure D and hope Romo keeps making mistakes...
