Uh Oh: Bills Likely Without Marshawn for Pats Game

Ankle injury could keep Lynch out longer (BuffaloBills.com)

Oh, crap.

The injury bug bit the Bills earlier today; now the little monster has taken both legs of the Buffalo Bills. During his weekly press conference, Bills head coach Dick Jauron gave us the first update on Marshawn Lynch, whose injured ankle (which he sustained at the very end of the Dolphins game) created a cloud of uncertainty over his playing status. The news is bad.

Lynch is likely to miss this Sunday night's Patriots game, and Jauron also alluded that the injury may be a multiple-week issue. Lynch was absent from practice today; if he is unable to go this weekend, the Bills will likely lean on its other three runners (Anthony Thomas, Dwayne Wright and Fred Jackson) to maintain offensive balance against a stingy Patriots defense.

Oh, crap.

This team is snake-bitten. The season starts with promise, only to see that promise squashed by injuries to prominent starters (Posluszny, Price, Simpson) and the devastating loss of a teammate (Kevin Everett). Then, just as things are turning around, we lose two more players to IR (we're up to 12 now, by the way), and our best player won't be able to go for the biggest game of the year. Snake-bitten.

Jauron's comments (as quoted from the linked article above):

"It's very sore right now," said head coach Dick Jauron. "I would say we're not overly optimistic. We'll just kind of go through the week and see what happens, but we're not optimistic about it."

"We've all seen things happen real fast and people heal real fast particularly when they're that young and he's a little bit different," said Jauron. "So we'll hope and see what happens, but if he can't go then we'll go on to our three guys and we like them all."

We like them too, Dick. We just don't like them against the Patriots. Thomas is a steady veteran, and he's likely to get most of the work early; Wright has been sprinkled in throughout the season and is currently second on the team in rushing attempts (his 25 are dwarfed by the 196 of Lynch); Jackson has spent most of this season as an emergency quarterback, but he could have an impact as a slasher and receiver if given an opportunity. These guys are good players. They're just not Marshawn Lynch. Only players like Marshawn Lynch can be catalysts for a victory against a team like New England.

Starting quarterback J.P. Losman reacted as well:

"He's been a tremendous force for our offense all year," said J.P. Losman of Lynch. "But if he's not there everyone is just going to have to pick up their load. And whoever is stepping for him Anthony, Dwayne, Fred, those guys are going to step in there and make some plays as well. We'll have some things to cater towards what those guys do best as well which would help us out if necessary. We've just got to keep it rolling."

Yes and no, J.P. Yes, players will have to step up. But it doesn't start with the three runners - it starts with you. The pressure's on, kid - this is now, literally, your offense to carry. Have fun with it.

The Optimist's Perspective
Speaking as a Bills fan, this (still potential) loss is devastating for Buffalo's chances of upsetting the undefeated, historically good Patriots. We've seen crazier things happen, sure - but a victory over the Patriots now is about as likely as the A-Train suddenly being blessed with the playing talents of Thurman Thomas.

Maybe that's the perspective we need to take here. Even with Lynch, did this young Bills team really stand a chance? The realist in me says yes and no. One thing is for certain: of the team's remaining schedule, this game is the one that the team is most likely going to lose. Why not cut your losses and let Marshawn get healthy this week, then see if he can't make a go of it the week after in Jacksonville? Win or lose, we're still in a playoff race, after all. Maybe letting Marshawn sit is the best move for the team's playoff chances this season.

That's the realistic, optimistic perspective. That perspective sucks. The glamor of this matchup is gone - the Bills are now one-dimensional offensively, and that dimension is spelled "L-e-e". If Belichick can take Lee away, it will take a Herculean effort from every single other skill position player to turn this into a game.

I'm exhausted thinking about this. I'm upset that we're not getting a shot at the Pats at full throttle, but I mostly just feel bad for Lynch not getting a shot to perform against the league's best team on a national stage. Here's hoping our team MVP gets healthy ASAP.

Oh, crap.

More concerned that he 100%
If Lynch played and his injury is not fully recovered, he's putting himself at further risk of injury.  I'd rather lose this game and have Lynch for the final stretch then see him out for several weeks or worse.

Also the glamor of this match-up is not gone; its our Defense and special teams that has been keeping us in games.  Where was Lynch in the Dallas game?

Re:
I'll give you special teams, but our defense? Sure, they've been good, but this is the Patriots we're talking about. The same Patriots who are scoring literally a shade under 40 points (39.4) per game. Do you honestly believe that the Bills can hold them under 30? We might make some plays and keep it close for a quarter or two, but nobody has stopped New England from scoring. We'll be no different, and we haven't consistently scored ourselves, to boot.

So yes. The glamor's gone from this game.

i do
i do think the defense can keep them under 30. the most difficult part will be defensing fades to moss (unless of course ne scores way before they reach the red zone). this team has an uncanny ability to toughen up in the redzone. further, the cover 2 is basically built around making plays and preventing touchdowns. ne's run game (when used) has been relatively inconsistent (brian feel free to use stats to disprove this, i didnt look anything up but have watched pretty much all ne games this year) and our secondary has been excellent at preventing big plays. ne scored 38 earlier this year (you can argue they called off the dogs, but they scored almost all those pts in the 2nd half) against us in foxboro with a much less settled/tested defense. i dont think cutting 10 off of that is unrealistic considering we will be at home, the crowd will be nuts, the defense has grown, and we have the colts blueprint from 2 weeks ago.

that being said, it will be hard to put up more than 28 with our offense. hopefully the defense and st will make some plays and keep it interesting into the 4th. at that one play can determine the outcome.

ugh
first line supposed to be "defending" not "defensing". awful looking typo.

With or without Lynch...
Bills have not put up over 30 points in any game and they won't Sunday.  So if the Bills D doesn't hold the Pats under 30, the game will be a blow-out no matter who's carrying the ball.  Also, of all the Pats opponents so far, only the Colts have given up less points per game than the Bills.  So I think you can argue that the Bills defense matches up...well, as good as anyone can against the Pats at this point.

In any case I'm not looking for glamor nor do I expect us to win.  I just want the Bills to drag these prima donnas down into the scrum and hit them hard.

Bills 33, Bengals 21
I'm right there with you in terms of smacking the Pats right in the mouth - at the very least, we can give them the most physical game they've had to date. Lay the lumber a bit. That could be fun to watch for a while.

HaHa
I stand corrected.

Have you come across any new about weather conditions?  The only long range forecasts I've seen indicate it will be cold - in the 30's. But nothing about rain/snow...

Snow
ive heard reports of possible snow showers...
Moss has never had a home in the snow, could be interesting (does anyone know how he did at Lambo in the snow?)

I've watched every NE game because I go to school in Boston.  To be honest with you, its harder to cover Wes Welker.  hes so fast and is very good at finding holes in the defense.  If we could only somehow hurt Tom Brady or force the pats to run (the weather), this could be a long game for the bills.

I'm praying A-Train turns into Ron Dayne and has a game like he did in college.

Hurt Brady ?
Hoping for an injury to Brady should be the last thing we wish for. I mean, I'd love to see an upset but injuring a great player doesn't sit right with me. I'd much rather see good defensive play take Brady out of the game.

Here's the deal - even if we're not in the football game after the first 10 minutes, we should all sit back and watch the way the New England offense moves the ball. This is one of the best offenses ever constructed. Hate to say it but it's true.

sorry buffalobill
i cant get fired up about watching an offense "move the ball" against the bills.

wheres D-Wright
what about D-Wright this guy was a 4th rounder, and supposed to be part of a one two combo along with Lynch. We've barley seen this guy, let's give him 15-20 touches and see what he can do.what's it gonna hurt?

Freddie Jackson
Jackson looked like a star playing against scrubs in the pre-season, but he really did look good with his effort and quickness.  If he breaks one or two plays, the Bills can be competitive with this surprise.  Given how the season has been going, I think this will happen!

don't forget the halfback option
Wasn't Jackson also listed as 3rd QB for a week or two?  I usually cringe at gadget plays, but that throw by Lynch on the halfback option was sweet. I bet Jackson is capable of making the same play.
