Losman Benched, Edwards to Start in Washington

Edwards makes first start since Week 8 (BuffaloBills.com)

After a three-week stretch in which the offense of the Buffalo Bills managed to score just 34 points, veteran QB J.P. Losman - who led that offensive stretch - has been benched. Bills head coach Dick Jauron announced today that Trent Edwards will start this Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.

The few quotes that have been extracted from Jauron at this point come via the official site:

"In terms of our quarterbacks, we'll make the switch and Trent will be our starter," said Jauron. "We fully understand that it's not only J.P.. That's not the only reason we've lost these couple of games in a row, but it is the focal point of the offense and we do need a lot of consistency from that position."

"We need production," said Jauron. "We need to stay on the field and score. And we're going to make the change in the hopes that we can get started again and play a real good game this Sunday against the Redskins."

Most of you who frequent this site realize that I've been a staunch supporter of Losman throughout this entire campaign. I still believe that Losman has what it takes to succeed at this level (it is well within your right, of course, to deduct sanity points from me at your own discretion), but it's also been obvious that Edwards was Jauron's man all along. This is, simply put, the right time for the Bills to be making this switch - the season is all but mathematically over for Buffalo, and if Edwards is the future, now is the right time to get him some experience.

Allow me a moment to vent about the ever-idiotic Jerry Sullivan, however - he's been on the Edwards bandwagon for quite some time, and deserves credit for sticking to his guns even when Losman wasn't playing like Alex Smith. Sullivan is a smart guy, but when he makes comments like this, it's hard to respect the man:

"So Jauron has the justification to pull Losman now. The experiment is over. The gunslinger idea has no currency with this coach. I'm told that most of the players want Losman to start. If that's true, I've overestimated the intelligence of this young team."

I understand that this remark is likely satirical in nature, but it's also not necessary. Let me point out that if these rumors are true - that Bills players (not counting Lee Evans) really want Losman as the starter - it tells me absolutely nothing about their intelligence (or lack thereof). It's about loyalty - this team has been operating under the idea that Losman is their starter for a long period of months now, and it's admirable that they're sticking with their guy through rough times. I love that about the team - they're loyal, high-character guys, and ultimately, that's what is going to turn this franchise around.

So good luck, Trent. We're behind you, kid. Limit those picks and make throws like you did earlier this season, and your rise to stardom won't take long - Bills fans are thirsty for a star quarterback. Please, please be that guy.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
The (Not so)merry-go-round continues.

Funny thing is, I agree with this move as much as I want J.P. to succeed.  He has regressed to say the least.  Some guys just are not cut out for it and maybe J.P. isn't. The going trend in the NFL seems to be finding QB's from non-traditional places and maybe a 3rd round QB from a bad Stanford team can be our guy.  If a back up from Michigan taken in the 6th (or whatever) round or a fourth round QB from East Carolina or an undrafted guy from Eastern Illinois or a 6th round pick from Oregon St. can become stars, why not Edwards?

THANK GOD....
I think the experiment is over...Edwards is the guy......so here we go again....but I tell you what, I just can't keep seeing Losman back there.  When he throws it into tight coverages, he has lanes to run, when he runs, he looks like a lost child.

I just can't take it anymore.  The learning curve just wasn't there.  He just doesn't get it.  By no means am I saying Edwards is the saviour.  But he moves the sticks, gets 1st downs, and gets the ball out quickly and most importantly....ACCURATELY!

That is the biggest thing.

Re:
Trent's got a long way to go. He wasn't overly stellar when he played earlier this season, and he really needs to cut back on the whole one-pick-a-game thing. He's got a tough test in front of him with the Redskins this week.

Re.
Trent does have a long way to go.  He should have beaten the Cowboys that night. I know it could and has and will be debated for a long time, but he should have won that game.  Just because a coach tells you the play doesn't mean you have to follow it to the letter.  He doesn't throw that pick, we win (more than likely).  I am not slamming him, I am merely saying that he has a way to go and now must do it against some tough opponents.  Jauron has to be close to losing the team with all of this.  I find it hard to believe that Evans would want to remain here unless Trent can really take this job over. Will free agents want to come here with all of this?  Trent must step up and show growth, something J.P. never did.

Not worried
at all about losing the team and the potential negative effect on free agents. This team fights tooth and nail for Jauron; now the coach doesn't have any more excuses now that "his guy" is in there. If Edwards flops, then - and only then - I think he comes close to losing this team.

Thank him again
JP is just pitiful. Missing open receivers is a big no-no and now JP has no one else to blame. There were guys open 15 and 20 yards down field and he can't fine them. He was just hitting A Train. Last week against NE, even though people wanted to give him a pass, he could have hit the RB when Patsy LBs released on a delayed blitz, but didn't. He is like a dog. He forgets things he learns week to week, and if you teach him something again, he'll just do that all game.
Gad to see Trent in there so now I can be excited to see a young guy develop. Hope Lynch is back too so all the JP lovers can say that with Lynch back is the reason Trent looks better.

Re: Lynch
Absolutely. We need Marshawn back ASAP. Only then will Edwards have the weapons to not suck as bad as Losman has the last two weeks without him.

ugh
My favorite part about this site for the last six months or so since it opened has been the ability for people to openly exchange ideas without attacking eachother. Terms like "Losman lover" and "Edtards" are so pathetic and polarizing, I really hope they don't start to infiltrate this site.

I'll second that
Smart peeps here. Trust me, jmorris, when I say that I plan on working diligently to keep that stuff out of here. (Not that I'm indicting you, killascript. It happens.)

Losman's effort
It really is difficult to blame Losman for the offense's troubles.  The coaches put him in terrible situations and he had no chance.  When you run A-Train into the pack the first 2 downs and then force LOsman to pass on 3rd and long 75% of the gameplan...he is going to fail and fail miserably.  What happened to the quick out passes the Jags did all day?  What about throwing to Roscoe over the middle underneath?  When they do open up the offense, the long bomb to Lee Evans is so covered and expected, and they try it anyways?  SFM really does need to go and DJ can go with him.  He is a likable guy, but that only gets you so far int he league.  Can anyone say the liked Bill Parcells or Jimmy Johnson?  Bill Cowher mellowed later on but he seemed like someone you wouldn't invite over for dinner early in his career.

Here's an interesting thought...Maybe Losman screwed up on purpose so he can get away from this extremely sub-par coaching staff.  He even said it was his last chance to do something.  Maybe he meant it was his last chance to end his Buffalo days...maybe downtown didn't look so good even after getting cleaned up.  I don't blame him for wanting out if that was his motive.  This team is going nowhere with the closed-minded coaching staff in place now.

Re: Losman's effort
I find it difficult to believe that Losman "threw" the game so that he could be benched and ultimately get out of Buffalo.  If so, he "threw" 5 out of the other 6 games he played this season because he stunk in those too.

I definitely have some issues with Fairchild like everybody seems to, but I am kind of sick of him being the excuse for Losman.  From what I understand from people who attended the Jags game, there were definitely opportunities down the field that Losman didn't take advantage of.  Watching the game on TV, I saw lots of inaccurate throws and throwing into double and triple coverage.  Even if Fairchild is calling bad plays, you still can't make inaccurate throws when someone is open or throw into horrible coverage.

At the end of the day, even if the receivers aren't good, the playcalling isn't good or whatever, a FRANCHISE quarterback makes those around him better and wins games despite issues.  Losman never showed that he can raise the level of his play and his teamates' play.   I mean, heck, A.J. Feeley almost beat the Pats last night while playing quite well.  If he can rise up against them, J.P. should have been able to do something against teams like Miami and Jacksonville.

I supported Losman and thought he should get the opportunity to start the rest of the season because maybe he just needed a little more time.  But after his performance in his self-appointed "biggest game of his career", I agree that, for this team at least, he is done.  It makes me sad that it has come to this because I like J.P. a lot, but he isn't getting it done.  I would apply what you said about Jauron to Losman, "He is a likable guy, but that only gets you so far in the league."

Now is the time to see if Edwards can be the future of this team.  I don't know what he will do these last 5 games, but he has to get the shot.

Somewhat agree
I agree that Fairchild is a weak link.  He seems to make some very strange decisions.

However, the offense needs another 2 or 3 players and maybe his system would work better.  I think Fairchild will have one season to prove himself with Edwards.

The question I have...
is it the play calling or the execution?

by Zumone on Nov 26, 2007 6:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

QB play and lack of confidence..
are to blame.  There is no rythym in the offense and that all starts from the QB getting into and out of the huddle, having good cadence, and employing timing and consistency in the passing game.  All that said, I think the whole offense lacks confidence.  Do you really think that the WR's continue to run great routes when they have gone the whole game without catching a pass?  I mean, I just think that after a while ineptitude and frustration sets in, I can just imagine the play call come into the huddle and see guys saying, "Oh my God, this is what we are running."  I mean at the end of the day it all comes down to the QB.  Whether you think it is fair or not.  We lack QB play that gives us points regardless if Edwards or Losman has been in there.

Playoffs are out of the question unless they run the table.  Let Edwards try to spark the team to 5 in a row, if not, it is great experience for him leading into next year.

I bet we see JP again
The problem with Trent is that he gets injured alot, at least in college. Im not sure I have confidence in him to finish out th year without being knocked out of at least one game (and probably a start or two).

"Professional" opinion
Not that this means anything, but I saw it so I figured I would post it.

Bills' Losman has his moments, but not enough of them
