Offense Inept as Bills Drop Finale in Philly

Lynch strong, but O can't score in loss (AP photo/Tom Mihalek)

Just how bad has Buffalo's offense been this season? WR Josh Reed put it into perspective after learning, after Buffalo's season-ending 17-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, that his Bills offense had set a new team record for fewest touchdowns (20) in a season:

"I don't want to say embarrassing," said Reed in reference to the dubious distinction. "I think frustrating is a better word. What can you say after so long? It's been a whole season of frustration, just waiting for it and waiting for it (to change) and it never came for us."

Buffalo's offense went 0-for-the-red-zone, kicking three field goals and turning the ball over on downs once in their final pitiful performance of the 2007 season. Their abysmal effort wasted a solid one from Buffalo's defense, which played well enough - as usual - to win. It was a fitting end to Buffalo's season, as 2007 turned into one in which Buffalo proved two things: they have character, good motors and mettle, but they're also not yet good enough to beat a sound opponent consistently.

Lynch Closes Rookie Campaign Strong
Marshawn Lynch, as was the status quo all season, was the lone bright spot for Buffalo's offense. He finished the game with 105 rushing yards on 22 carries, including a 56-yard jaunt in the third quarter that set up a Rian Lindell field goal. The rookie finishes his debut season with 1,115 yards on 280 carries (4.0 yard average and an NFL-high 21.5 attempts per game) and 7 scores. He clearly is Buffalo's workhorse, and we look forward to a relaxing and leg-rejuvenating off-season for Buffalo's best player.

Trent Edwards, on the other hand, struggled. Playing in the face of a ferocious Eagles pass rush (which, ironically, did not record a sack on the day), Edwards completed 16 of 30 passes for just 133 yards. Trent looked good avoiding the rush - though he did take one bad intentional grounding penalty - but in the end, he just doesn't have receivers to throw to. His record drops to 5-4 as a rookie starter, and it's far from certain that he'll exit the 2008 off-season as Buffalo's starting QB. Two stats to note: when Edwards played on the road this season, the Bills scored just one touchdown (over four games) - way back in Week 3 in New England, believe it or not; Bills wideouts on this day caught 4 passes for 39 yards. Pitiful.

Defense Makes Plays, but Can't Stop McNabb
Facing what has been a solid Eagles offense for quite some time, Buffalo's defense turned in a surprisingly stellar performance to close out their campaign. The Bills sacked Eagles QB Donovan McNabb 4 times - including 1.5 from up-and-coming DT John McCargo - and forced two turnovers in the losing effort. Ashton Youboty, playing in nickel packages in place of Donte Whitner (illness), intercepted the first pass of his NFL career in the second quarter with the Eagles knocking on the door. John DiGiorgio added a sack and a fumble recovery; Bryan Scott and Jim Leonhard led the Bills with six tackles each.

An embattled run defense performed admirably as well. After surrendering 291 ground yards to the Giants in a Week 16 loss, Eagles runners picked up just 69 yards on the ground, forcing the Eagles to throw the ball a whopping 41 times. Unfortunately, it worked - McNabb completed 29 of those throws for 345 yards, a touchdown and Kevin Curtis recovered a Reggie Brown fumble in the end zone for another score. The bounces went the Eagles' way - and their aerial attack was ticking, so it's not surprising - but believe it or not, this was a strong effort from our injury-riddled defense.

Rumblings Game Balls
RB Marshawn Lynch: Not a surprise here, as Lynch is clearly the Bills' MVP and proved it with a 127-total-yard performance. The obvious building block for Buffalo's offense heading into 2008.

DT John McCargo: He really came on strong at the end of the season individually, and capped his growth year with a 1.5-sack performance. He certainly deserves a shot at nabbing a starting spot next season.

CB Ashton Youboty: He's struggled to get onto the field through his first two years, but after being pressed into action, his performance - while up and down - was solid. He was stellar against the run, notched 4 tackles, and had a beautiful interception on a bad McNabb pass.

A few other Reed quotes
"I think it definitely made it hard for us," said Reed. "Nothing changed. I mean 17 weeks of it and watching the film... it's easy (to defend). That's all I can say, it's easy."

I think that sums up what a lot of us have been thinking and saying.  All season long, the offensive play-calling has been too predictable, too simple and thus too easy to defend.

"I think we have more playmakers than we showed this season," said Reed. "That's just something we have to take into the offseason and we've just got to continue to work on that. We have threats and we have to make teams know that we do."

Once again, he is right on.  I think most of us would agree, while the Bills need more talent at some of the skill positions, they definitely didn't utilize the talent that they do have.

Good luck at Colorado State Fairchild...can't say I am sad to see you go...well I guess I could, but it would be one heck of a lie.

Reed's quotes
His comments are so telling about the whole offensive playcalling and philosophy this season.  It was more than just Fairchild.  If Jauron had had objections to the schemes and playcalling like the players have apparently had all season (and us fans have had), why didn't he force Fairchild to open it up?  I really believe Jauron is as much to blame as SF-M is.  His overly conservative philosophy will never make us a contender and our O will likely struggle unless he allows it to be properly opened up...

As much as I hate to say it
I think the big reason for Jauron/Fairchild's conservative game planning was Trent Edwards. They didn't want to shell shock the kid, and they didn't. Our offense sucked in the process, but hey - mission accomplished. Even the CBS announcers knew when Buffalo was going to run yesterday, because Edwards makes adjustments at the line in what Rich Gannon called a "check with me" system before the snap. It was really pathetic.

My gut feeling tells me that no matter who our OC is next season, the game plans will stay conservative if Trent is the starter. Perhaps, folks, we need to invest in a veteran QB...

I wouldn't be surprised
to see the Bills take a flyer on a veteran like Harrington or Weinke (honestly, is there anything else out there?).  I also believe that the new GM will find an OC that has ideas to fit the skills of Trent i.e. a west coast offense.  I know, I know I HATE!!!! the west coast, but it does seem to fit Trent's abilities and Marshawn's too.

Plenty more at QB
Good Lord, man, there's far more out there besides Joey Harrington and Chris Weinke. Those names scared the hell out of me; if they're Bills next year, I'll puke.

Here's a list of QBs who may be available (and again, I'm not advocating for this unless the Bills decide to move Losman): Kurt Warner, Kyle Boller, Derek Anderson, Jon Kitna, Sage Rosenfels, Quinn Gray, Damon Huard, Cleo Lemon, Chad Pennington, Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown, Donovan McNabb (not likely), Kerry Collins, Todd Collins.

wouldn't that be something
Todd Collins, bring him back to help the franchise 10 years after he was cut.

Not that I want Trent out but lets me just say that the best QB on that list (who could be had cheap) is Pennington. I know a lot of people don't like him and think he stinks, but let me just say he's better than everyone thinks.

who would have thought I'd miss Pete Metzelaars?

Agree wholeheartedly
Pennington is underrated, and he was also a lame duck with a new coach in NY. But he's Jauron's dream - incredibly intelligent, doesn't make very many mistakes, and a game manager/leader that moves the chains. He'd be the ideal tutor for Edwards.

Two things have to happen for Pennington to be a Bill, though: we'd have to move Losman, and we'd have to hire a GM with the beans to go after a big name like Chad. I doubt it happens. But if it did, it would be great fun to watch Chad exact revenge on his old team twice a year...

Ha Ha
"Those names scared the hell out of me"

That's what I'm here for.  However, those other names do not inspire much confidence but could be ok.  I just don't think they will be looking for a veteran QB to replace Trent, just to back him up.  Some of those names are still starters in this league.

Sorry guys
I think Pennington is overrated.  He has absolutely no arm strength.  As a backup, he'd be okay.  But if you're talking as a starter...geez...I'd say keep Losman.

It really doesn't matter.  Edwards is the starter next year no matter what.  It's always been said that the greatest leap for a player happens in the off season between their first and second year.  Hopefully they will select an OC who can mesh with Trent, and the sooner the better.  Mini camps are only a few months away, and the more work Trent can get in the off season the better for us all.

I'm forced to watch Chad a lot
And let me tell you he's a quality QB. he can't make all the throws because he does have a weak arm, but he knows his limits and works accordingly. Trust me he's better than most give him credit for. I don't think arm strength is everything, accuracy and poise count for more in my book. Also I think Trent is very similar to Chad just with a stronger arm so he can show Trent the ropes.

I've heard the Coles is unhappy in NY, maybe the Bills can get a package deal. I'm sure not to many people would complain about Chad if he came with Coles. (I could be wrong)

Are you saying
That you'd rather have Pennington as a starter than Edwards than?  I think we just need to look for a vet backup, someone who knows they won't start, but could lend guidance to.  Edwards should be the unquestioned starter next year, given the improvements he should make in this offseason.

I think we need to pay more attention to the D.  QB should be the last thing we all should be thinking about now.  If worst comes to worst, we keep Losman (which I doubt will happen).

No
I wan't Trent as QB, I think Chad would be a great mentor, and quality backup.

I agree, about the D.

I'm thinking something like...
How about 3rd round pick and JP Losman for Marc Bulger?  Then, Jauron hires Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator.  I believe the only way this wimpy defense that Dick Jauron and Perry Fewell insist on running can be effective is with an explosive offense.  If you can score points in bunches, the pseudo-prevent that is the Tampa 2, actually has some merit to it.  Bulger has a big new contract, but Buffalo has plenty of cap room and the actual money that Wilson would have to shell out wouldn't break the bank.  Buffalo has so many draft picks at their disposal and so few roster spots open due to a lack of free agents, that I feel it's imperative that the new GM gets creative this offseason in terms of fixing the offense.  I don't think a Trent Edwards clone like Chad Pennington is what I'm looking for, rather I want the anti-Edwards- some one who can produce a TD once or twice a game.  Edwards is not ready to play yet, but he's cheap and has some long range potential.  We can afford to let him develop behind someone established until he actually wins a starting job through his play.

1 problem
Dick Jauron and Mike Martz would be like oil and water. I can't see those two coexisting together I thought of
pennington because as Brian said, he fits with Jauron.

Jauron
Some other things that fit with Jauron are teams that struggle to score points and 7-9 records...Jauron's been a head coach now for 7 seasons; the learning curve is long gone.  Maybe he needs to take a look in the mirror make some adjustments.

can't argue
I've posed the question before, about weather or not Jauron is too conservative, and hence forces his OCs to be aswell. I think he needs to stay, but maybe he needs to loosen up a bit.
