Notes from the Notes of Training Camp, Day Two: McCargo Shines

Another two practices are in the books at Bills training camp, and there are tons more topics of conversation to start from the fantastic notes that Chris Brown takes for the official site. On quickly to some of the more interesting tidbits, so that you may more easily enjoy your Saturday:

Losman Returns, Looks Solid
J.P. Losman was activated from the PUP list just a day after making it, and he participated in nearly every drill (sitting out only those that would normally cause back problems). As an example of his near-100% health:

Losman had no reservations about throwing some deep passes as he effectively reared back on a few occasions. His best pass went for a 50-yard gain down the left sideline to Peerless Price who got by Jason Webster on an out-and-up move.

Defensive Tackle Shake-Up
Perhaps the biggest piece of news coming out of yesterday's practice was that John McCargo got first-team reps ahead of Larry Tripplett. I'll be quite honest with you, this bit of news has me giddy. Not because I want to see McCargo start necessarily, but because the coaches are loving what this kid has shown already:

McCargo appears to be pretty sound with his run game assignments and is not drawing the ire of defensive line coach Bill Kollar who is praising him more than anything these first two days.

Also, as user Geronimo predicted earlier this week, Jason Jefferson received reps with the second team defense at nose tackle ahead of Tim Anderson. While the Darwin Walker situation works itself out (see below), it looks like the depth chart is quickly starting to shape up inside.

Offense Making Big Plays
With Losman back under center, the Bills offense is making big plays. Check out some of the quotes:

"Losman was effective deep with a long throw to a streaking Roscoe Parrish who got behind Kiwaukee Thomas for a 40-yard gain. On the very next play Losman looked off Jason Webster and Donte Whitner who were doubling Evans and then quickly came back and fired a pass to Evans when the coverage slacked off. Evans then streaked past Whitner down the sideline for what would have been six points."

"Josh Reed got the segment started with a nice looking catch off a well executed play fake by Losman for a big gain."

"A few plays later Josh Reed caught a bomb from Losman that beat McGee."

If this team's RB-by-committee approach can be consistent, this offense is going to be absolutely letahl. Even with a back that is still hindering his practice habits, Losman sounds like he's on fire.

Walker Not Headed to Philly Yet
As WGR550 first reported yesterday, negotiations are still ongoing between the Bills and defensive tackle Darwin Walker. The Bills made a new proposal to the Walker camp a few days ago; Walker has since rejected that offer, but there is going to be a counter-offer. The fact that the two sides are talking is encouraging, to be sure, but it sounds like there's probably still a long way to go. The Bills are making it apparent that they would love to have Walker on this team:

"We'll still keep pursuing that and hopefully we can make the deal and get him here," said Jauron after practice Friday. "We'd love to do that. We'll just keep chasing it."

The Bills have two more practices today; we'll have full analysis of the day's events later on this afternoon after the practices have ended. Enjoy your Saturday!

Offense Performance
I think it was John Clayton a few days ago who said that if Buffalo's offense looks really good in training camp, although that would be the good news we are desperately looking for, may be a sign of a problematic defense.  The reports I have been reading really highlight big plays by the offense so far -- hopefully, that is a reflection of the improvement of the offense and not of the worsening of the defense.
