Around the AFC East, Pt. III - New York Jets

NY Landing Strip: SB Nation's New York Jets blog

Welcome back to yet another installment of "Around the AFC East". Each week, the four AFC East bloggers from SB Nation get together and interrogate each other about their respective teams (I use the word "interrogate" on purpose - generally, interrogations aren't friendly, and neither are the rivalries between these teams). Rounding up this week's activity: Jetfighter from NY Landing Strip.

BR: What does the Jets' situation at cornerback look like after the addition of Darrelle Revis? Will he start right away, or will he have to duke it out with Justin Miller for a spot? Has the position been upgraded or downgraded in your eyes?

NY Landing Strip: After the addition of Darrelle Revis, the Jets have Andre Dyson (opposite side corner), Justin Miller, David Barrett, 2nd year man Drew Coleman, and journeyman Hank Poteat. Unless Revis has a stellar training camp, he will not be starting right away, and coming in on different packages as a dime back as well as corner.

You may be surprised to hear this, but I feel that the competition that will take place will be between David Barrett, Drew Coleman and Hank Poteat. Justin Miller got arrested in the offseason for attempting to punch a man, but instead nailing a woman in her face, so he could be in the doghouse. He was still a Pro Bowler in special teams, so don't count him out on that, but he got abused playing corner. So much so that Mangini was forced to play a rotation of Coleman and Poteat last season because Barrett was injured.

I really can't give an upgrade or downgrade, because even though one day Revis will lock down Evans and Parrish, for now he is a rookie with no NFL experience, so they have the same depth at corner as they did last season."

I am no Jets expert, but I'm allowed to have opinions on my foes - I'm not intimidated by anybody in the Jets' secondary other than Kerry Rhodes. I liked Revis heading up to the draft, but I don't think he's ready to excel at this level - and I don't think he'll ever be a top-flight corner in this league. Dyson is a solid veteran, but the trio of Barrett, Coleman and Poteat leave a lot to be desired. Miller reminds me a lot of our own Terrence McGee - good kick returner, picked on by the opposition. I think the Jets are pretty solid in their front seven, but their secondary will be their biggest liability this coming season. I expect our receivers to have big days in the two Jets matchups.

And let's face it - Lee Evans will be uncoverable by anyone in the league long before the Jets let Darrelle Revis attempt to cover him.

If you have a question to ask of The Phinsider, Pats Pulpit or NY Landing Strip for future installments of this feature, feel free to e-mail me and I'll do my best to get your question answered.

With the exception of when he was recovering...
...from a catastrophic knee injury and when he hasn't had a decent QB to get him the ball, Evans has always put up good numbers.  If Losman continues to improve and Evans can stay healthy, they could be as prolific a combination as Kelly-Reed, and anyone the Jets have is going to get burned twice a year.

Re:
Reed had much more of an underneath presence than Evans currently does; I do see Evans and Reed in a similar mold, though, so hopefully that comparison becomes more realistic in the coming years (provided Evans gets an extension, of course).

Oh, and welcome back Jordan. Did you decide to become an actual Bills fan yet?

Evans will beat the Jets anytime he wants
Revis will be a solid CB in the NFL, but I don't think he'll be anywhere near elite.  I'm sure he'll have some success against us down the road, but the next couple seasons Evans should own him if they are matched up.

Ahhhhh
It must be close to football season if we're hearing the "suck suck suck" chant... right?

Evans/Revis
I actually think Revis is going to be a pretty good CB when it's all said and done... But shut down Evans? Ha, not going to happen!  At least not until Evans starts to age and lose a step...

By then...
...he'll be experienced and crafty enough that he'll still beat Revis.
