Buffalo Bills vs. Atlanta Falcons - Open Game Thread

10 vs 13

FINAL SCORE
Game Preview :: The Falcoholic

Update [2007-8-17 23:55:30 by Brian G]: The Bills gave up a late touchdown to Chris Redman and the Falcons to drop a 13-10 decision in their pre-season home opener at Ralph Wilson Stadium. I was able to withstand screaming children and plenty of drunk, bored fans to get some good analysis; I'll have a full recap of the game up in the morning. I wanted to personally thank nickfeely8 and the rest of you who showed up in the open thread this evening (especially to those of you who are new members - welcome to the site, we're very glad you've joined us!) for keeping the conversation going. It was great to come home to a nice long thread with plenty of updates and interaction. Great job Nick, and great job Bills fans!

Welcome to the official Buffalo Rumblings open game thread for the Bills/Falcons pre-season game. Here's the deal: I know for a fact that there are people out there who are "lurkers", i.e. they read this site but never comment. Well, tonight's the perfect opportunity to throw your hat in the ring - go ahead and create a free account to join in the discussion! I'll be at the Ralph for the game, but nickfeely8, a veteran here at Rumblings, will be leading the discussions - and we're looking for as much Bills talk as possible. So grab a beer (if you're of age - stick with pop otherwise) and let's get talking.

Looking forward to this.
I really am.  I have a long day ahead of me of doing real-life errands, so that means I can't wait to crack open a can at 7 and watc....er...listen, I mean, to the game.

Hopefully I can lead some insightful discussion here, and hopefully someone who has television access can describe to me what the heck is going on.

See you all tonight right back here.

Alright.
Here we go, boys and gals, twenty minutes from game time.

Brian made some really good points about what he's watching for at the game tonight.  (Have fun Brian, your opinion will be missed)

Anything additional that you guys are looking for from the Bills tonight?

Also, Vick (obviously), Dunn, and Crumpler are all out for the Falcons, so hopefully we won't have a repeat of last week's first quarter defense.

Bills injuries.
Josh Scobey, Angelo Crowell, Brad Butler, Aaron Merz and Melvin Fowler are all sidelined tonight.

Duke Preston will start at center for Fowler, and Coy Wire will start for Angelo Crowell.

Atlanta is also without second-year RB Jerrious Norwood, and LB Demorrio Williams.

Both teams are pretty banged up at this point it seems, though I'm sure many of the inactives are simply cautionary.

NICE.
Nice goal line stand for Buffalo.  Discouraging that they got all the way down to the one yard line on the legs of Jason Snelling, but "bend, don't break" seems to be the way the defense is rolling right now.

Poz's name came up a lot on that drive (listening on the radio).  Seems like he is looking good so far.

Looking forward to seeing (read: hearing about) Marshawn Lynch on this drive.

Big play.
36 yarder from Losman to Evans on 3rd and 6.

Offensive line picked up a blitz nicely (with Lynch's help).

Encouraging.

Ryan Denney was hurt on the opening kickoff.  It's his lower leg.  No word officially yet.

Boy, Harrington sucks.
Terrence McGee an "easy interception" (words of mark kelso)off Joey H.

38 yard return, too.

Hopefully McGee steps up his cornerback play this year, that would be huge.

Drive stalls.
This offense has to capitalize on turnovers when we get the chance.

Inexcusable to come up point-less on that possession.  Losman missed receivers twice and had a bad shotgun snap get over his head.

Lindell missed a 55 yarder with a lot of wind blowing at the Ralph, can't really blame him.

1st quarter thoughts.
  1. Posluszny has been all over the field so far.
  2. Big plays made by Evans and Terrence McGee are promising.
  3. Losman has been his usual inconsistent self.
  4. The defense has tightened up after that first goal line stand.
  5. Still haven't gotten a sufficient dose of Marshawn.

Defensive secondary out.
Whitner, Simpson, McGee, and Webster

have been changed to

Leonhard, Wilson, Greer, and Youboty.

I'd like to see something from Ashton in this game.

ANOTHER TURNOVER.
Sounds like Wire really put a hurtin' on Snelling there.  Nice to see our defense forcing some TO's and making big plays.  Snelling is still down.

Lynch out.
The A-train's in there now.  Marshawn seemed to run tough and had some decently long runs.  I'm happy with what we got from him tonight.

Lindell FG.
Well, Buffalo has 3 points from 2 turnovers. Not ideal, but good for a 3-0 lead.

Lindell hits from 48.

Where is Everybody?
Hi Nick,

I've been following along at NFL.com and Buffalo Rumblings.

Out here on the West Coast - No TV or radio.

-Warren

by Drafttekguy on Aug 17, 2007 7:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nice.
At least I know I haven't been talking to myself the whole time.

The sad part, I'm only two hours away from Buffalo and I don't have TV either.  I got a free 7 day trial from NFL.com for the radio cast, so I cashed in on that.

Nice to have you here, Warren.

Your thoughts on the game so far?

thoughts on game so far
1-Defense making good plays early on, lots to be optimistic about

2-Really wish offense would capitalize on scoring opportunities..it could be 14-0 right now, but they do seem to have improved so far, gotta think that wind is somewhat of a factor.

by applet68 on Aug 17, 2007 8:01 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree.
I can't tell because I haven't been watching, but you're right, the wind must be hindering both offenses so far.

The D-Line seems to be playing much better than last week, minus that first drive, but that's hard to say without being able to see it.

D-line
Yes you right there it is hard to tell without seeing it, from what I can tell on NFL.COM they seem to be penetrating a lot more and getting the plays disrupted...and making plays (mcCargo with the recovery)

by applet68 on Aug 17, 2007 8:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

McCargo
He also got penetration on a 3rd and 1 and dropped Snelling in the backfield.  Atlanta got the first down on 4th and 2, but still encouraging.

Passes to Lynch
Wish they would have completed some passes to Lynch, would have liked to see what he can do in space.

by applet68 on Aug 17, 2007 8:03 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely.
They tried once I think, and Lynch got blown up by DeAngelo Hall.

The play-calling doesn't seem to be of the "explosive" nature that Fairchild was supposed to bring, but obviously they are holding things back in the preseason.

Injuries
This is one thing that is getting me nervous..all these minor training camp injuries, I just hope that the Bills are able to get to the regular season without any major injuries...every time Chris Brown tells about one I get all nervous

by applet68 on Aug 17, 2007 8:08 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Absolutely right.
It can be devastating to a team to have a star go down in the preseason (see: Michael Vick in 2004), but what often gets overlooked is little, nagging injuries that can hinder a bunch of players for the whole season.  Hopefully we can get these guys at full strength before opening day.

It'd be nice.
It's amazing what an athletic tight end can do for an offense.  If the line gels well, then we just may be able to send him out more often.

Laurent Robinson
Watched a little bit of the game last week against the Jets, and this guy looked pretty good.

Has made some plays against the Bills as well so far.

I love the big, tough receiver mold, but somehow they often get overlooked (see: Colston, Marques).

Wouldn't it be funny (in an evil sort of way) if, after all those first round receiver picks, Robinson ends up being the one that pans out.

Fourth Runningback
With Fred Jackson performing well do you think like Brian G that the Bills will opt to keep 4 running backs and sacrifice depth somewhere else?

by applet68 on Aug 17, 2007 8:19 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I do.
I really like the way Jackson looked against the Saints, and I know the Bills did too.  On the other hand, it's hard for me to decide who should go in his place.

I think it also depends on what happens with Anthony Hargrove and that whole situation.

bravescorner.blogspot.com

by nickfeely8 on Aug 17, 2007 8:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

bye bye Shaud
True true, how the Hargrove situation pans out certainly is a factor...one thing that I hope to be certain of is that Shaud Williams will not make the team, I appreciate his work ethic, and just shear heart when he plays.  But he just never gets the job done.  I believe that his days as a Buffalo Bill are number.

by applet68 on Aug 17, 2007 8:27 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i sure hope so.
I remember he had that one good game against Cleveland where we absolutely dominated them in Buffalo.  (The defense gave up some absurdly low yardage, can't remember the exact number.)  But other than that, he never did much.

I won't be sad to see him gone.

6-3 at half.
Well, for a game that I'm listening to on the radio, I can't exactly qualify it in the "exciting" category.

We got a decent look at Marshawn Lynch, and he seemed to be living up to the billing.

Losman played the whole half, but did not play particularly well.  Never really got any good drives going at all. Only got three points on two turnovers.

The defense was up and down, as the Falcons racked up some good yardage, but only managed two FG's.

Hope that the First Team Offense can find their groove next game..last chance before it gets real, unless they are played any significant time in the last game which is unlikely.

Edwards in on the first series.
First drive stalls.

Edwards is in there, I guess Nall doesn't need any work.  They ran no-huddle on that drive. I guess they wanted to see his poise in a no-huddle offense.

Anthony Hargrove
Hargrove is really making a case for himself to make the team...back to back plays no less..sack then interception...If I am the Bills I would be seriously considering just swallowing the suspension and hope that he gets cleared of the charges, he would be useful for at least 12 games this season.

by applet68 on Aug 17, 2007 8:52 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely.
As Brian has stated before here, I think Hargrove is one of the most talented players in that "cut" group that might not make the team.  He could be a real force if given a chance to rotate in to the D-Line.

I love the way this defense is making plays, and we finally cashed in on one of them.

Correct me if I am wrong...but did Posluszny start the game? and through these two preseason games so far have the Bills had no turnovers?("knock on wood")<---as good old Coach Jauron says

That would be excellent if both of those were true

Although we call him Freddy back here in Iowa.  First time blogger.  My kids will be shocked.  We are Freddy's Iowa family while he was attending Coe College.  Great young man with a wonderful wife and a beautiful son.  We've been watching him play football since he was a freshman at Coe and he's always made the grade.  We're pulling for him and the Bills.

Well, welcome to Buffalo Rumblings!

Brian G, the owner of the blog, is at the game right now, so I am running the game thread in his place.

I read in Marv Levy's book all about Coe College, and I would like to say that we have really enjoyed Freddy so far on the Bills.

I personally am really rooting for him to make this team and contribute for Buffalo this season.

Nope.
Illegal Snap penalty took us back to our own 45.

Pass for 5 yards on 3rd and 15 leaves us at 4th and 10 from midfield.

1:33 left to play.

Incomplete pass.
A huge pass rush got to Edwards, he threw incomplete.

So, Buffalo loses this one.

Yogi?
Guess you're not a Yogi Berra fan, huh nick? From what I've read here tonight, the most noteworthy things from tonight would be Edwards having the whole second half to himself and Hargrove's plays.

Yogi?
Not particularly, why do you ask? haha.

Final Thoughts.
I'm basically coming away from this one with the same feeling I had from the Saints games.

Plus marks go to:
Marshawn Lynch, Trent Edwards, Paul Posluszny, Defensive Line, Defensive Playmaking

Minus marks go to:
JP Losman, Offensive Line

No really glaring minuses tonight, but JP was inconsistent and the Falcons seemed to be getting a pretty good pass rush.

Overall, I give Buffalo a 6.447 out of 10.

Signing off.
Now I have to go watch my Atlanta Braves finish getting pounded by Brandon Webb and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It has been a pleasure filling in for Brian G, and although turnout was short in the first quarter, we picked it up in the second half.

Go Bills!

Thanks nick...
....for filling in for Brian. Guess I better finish up my work for the night. Sorry you were so lonely the first half!

Comments on game
I had considered Losman to have entered the arena of "established" NFL quarterbacks.  Would really like to see more consistent drives from him in the preseason.

I wonder if Bills brass kept him playing in the 2nd quarter to see if he could shake the rust off.

And it would be great to get Lynch some more work.

On Atlanta's side, Would like to know how DE Jamaal Anderson and CB Chris Houston fared - their top 2 draftees.  Looks like LB Stephen Nicholas and S Daren Stone were quite active in the stats column.
