Buffalo Bills vs. Atlanta Falcons - Open Game Thread
FINAL SCORE
Game Preview :: The Falcoholic
Update [2007-8-17 23:55:30 by Brian G]: The Bills gave up a late touchdown to Chris Redman and the Falcons to drop a 13-10 decision in their pre-season home opener at Ralph Wilson Stadium. I was able to withstand screaming children and plenty of drunk, bored fans to get some good analysis; I'll have a full recap of the game up in the morning. I wanted to personally thank nickfeely8 and the rest of you who showed up in the open thread this evening (especially to those of you who are new members - welcome to the site, we're very glad you've joined us!) for keeping the conversation going. It was great to come home to a nice long thread with plenty of updates and interaction. Great job Nick, and great job Bills fans!
Welcome to the official Buffalo Rumblings open game thread for the Bills/Falcons pre-season game. Here's the deal: I know for a fact that there are people out there who are "lurkers", i.e. they read this site but never comment. Well, tonight's the perfect opportunity to throw your hat in the ring - go ahead and create a free account to join in the discussion! I'll be at the Ralph for the game, but nickfeely8, a veteran here at Rumblings, will be leading the discussions - and we're looking for as much Bills talk as possible. So grab a beer (if you're of age - stick with pop otherwise) and let's get talking.

Looking forward to this.
Hopefully I can lead some insightful discussion here, and hopefully someone who has television access can describe to me what the heck is going on.
See you all tonight right back here.
Alright.
Brian made some really good points about what he's watching for at the game tonight. (Have fun Brian, your opinion will be missed)
Anything additional that you guys are looking for from the Bills tonight?
Also, Vick (obviously), Dunn, and Crumpler are all out for the Falcons, so hopefully we won't have a repeat of last week's first quarter defense.
Bills injuries.
Duke Preston will start at center for Fowler, and Coy Wire will start for Angelo Crowell.
Atlanta is also without second-year RB Jerrious Norwood, and LB Demorrio Williams.
Both teams are pretty banged up at this point it seems, though I'm sure many of the inactives are simply cautionary.
NICE.
Poz's name came up a lot on that drive (listening on the radio). Seems like he is looking good so far.
Looking forward to seeing (read: hearing about) Marshawn Lynch on this drive.
Big play.
Offensive line picked up a blitz nicely (with Lynch's help).
Encouraging.
Ryan Denney was hurt on the opening kickoff. It's his lower leg. No word officially yet.
Boy, Harrington sucks.
38 yard return, too.
Hopefully McGee steps up his cornerback play this year, that would be huge.
Drive stalls.
Inexcusable to come up point-less on that possession. Losman missed receivers twice and had a bad shotgun snap get over his head.
Lindell missed a 55 yarder with a lot of wind blowing at the Ralph, can't really blame him.
1st quarter thoughts.
- Posluszny has been all over the field so far.
- Big plays made by Evans and Terrence McGee are promising.
- Losman has been his usual inconsistent self.
- The defense has tightened up after that first goal line stand.
- Still haven't gotten a sufficient dose of Marshawn.
Defensive secondary out.
have been changed to
Leonhard, Wilson, Greer, and Youboty.
I'd like to see something from Ashton in this game.
ANOTHER TURNOVER.
Lynch out.
Lindell FG.
Lindell hits from 48.
Where is Everybody?
I've been following along at NFL.com and Buffalo Rumblings.
Out here on the West Coast - No TV or radio.
-Warren
Nice.
The sad part, I'm only two hours away from Buffalo and I don't have TV either. I got a free 7 day trial from NFL.com for the radio cast, so I cashed in on that.
Nice to have you here, Warren.
Your thoughts on the game so far?
thoughts on game so far
2-Really wish offense would capitalize on scoring opportunities..it could be 14-0 right now, but they do seem to have improved so far, gotta think that wind is somewhat of a factor.
I agree.
The D-Line seems to be playing much better than last week, minus that first drive, but that's hard to say without being able to see it.
D-line
McCargo
Passes to Lynch
Definitely.
The play-calling doesn't seem to be of the "explosive" nature that Fairchild was supposed to bring, but obviously they are holding things back in the preseason.
Injuries
Absolutely right.
3-3.
Everett Sighting
It'd be nice.
Laurent Robinson
Has made some plays against the Bills as well so far.
I love the big, tough receiver mold, but somehow they often get overlooked (see: Colston, Marques).
Wouldn't it be funny (in an evil sort of way) if, after all those first round receiver picks, Robinson ends up being the one that pans out.
Losman still in.
Marshawn is out, but the starting O-Line is in with Fred Jackson.
Fourth Runningback
I do.
I think it also depends on what happens with Anthony Hargrove and that whole situation.
bye bye Shaud
i sure hope so.
I won't be sad to see him gone.
6-3 at half.
We got a decent look at Marshawn Lynch, and he seemed to be living up to the billing.
Losman played the whole half, but did not play particularly well. Never really got any good drives going at all. Only got three points on two turnovers.
The defense was up and down, as the Falcons racked up some good yardage, but only managed two FG's.
Looking towards the Titans
Edwards in on the first series.
Edwards is in there, I guess Nall doesn't need any work. They ran no-huddle on that drive. I guess they wanted to see his poise in a no-huddle offense.
First Half Grades
Lynch: B+
WR's: Not enough info to grade.
O-Line: B
D-Line: A-
LB's: A
Secondary: A-
Greg Wilson
Sack/FF, then an INT.
YES! The D is making some plays, and I like it!
TOUCHDOWN!
Nice to see Trent scramble around a bit, and obviously if you give Roscoe some time he's going to get open with his speed.
Anthony Hargrove
Definitely.
I love the way this defense is making plays, and we finally cashed in on one of them.
Celebration.
The choice:
Samuel Adams Summer Ale - great stuff.
Beverage
Dr. P
Announcer.
"Edwards made chicken salad out of....something a lot worse than that."
Brilliant Murphy, just brilliant.
Pos and turnovers
That would be excellent if both of those were true
You are...
Poz started and played very well when he was in there.
And yes, Buffalo has no turnovers so far. Very few penalties as well.
Fred Jackson
D-Line making plays.
Jason Jefferson
Leapfrogging
Fred Jackson

Welcome!
Brian G, the owner of the blog, is at the game right now, so I am running the game thread in his place.
I read in Marv Levy's book all about Coe College, and I would like to say that we have really enjoyed Freddy so far on the Bills.
I personally am really rooting for him to make this team and contribute for Buffalo this season.
Thanks for posting, and keep coming back!
Fred Jackson
We hope to get out to Buffalo for a game this year if Freddy makes the team.

Shockley
I guess Harrington and Redman, two failed first rounders, seem like better options.
Well.
Better not say anything about ANY Bills player for the rest of the evening.

Yes.
Their QB just went down, so now their second stringer Chris Redman is back in.
Left knee.
I didn't see it, I'm listening on the radio b/c it is blacked out.
situation.
1st and goal from the 1 now.
Touchdown Falcons.
13-10 Falcons with 2:38 to play.
Trent Edwards is 18-21 in his two preseason games so far. We need him to lead a drive here.

Two Minute Warning.
Morgan.
anything?
by Karol101 on Aug 17, 2007 9:49 PM EDT reply actions
Nope.
Pass for 5 yards on 3rd and 15 leaves us at 4th and 10 from midfield.
1:33 left to play.
Incomplete pass.
So, Buffalo loses this one.
Yogi?
Final Thoughts.
Plus marks go to:
Marshawn Lynch, Trent Edwards, Paul Posluszny, Defensive Line, Defensive Playmaking
Minus marks go to:
JP Losman, Offensive Line
No really glaring minuses tonight, but JP was inconsistent and the Falcons seemed to be getting a pretty good pass rush.
Overall, I give Buffalo a 6.447 out of 10.
Signing off.
It has been a pleasure filling in for Brian G, and although turnout was short in the first quarter, we picked it up in the second half.
Go Bills!
2nd welcome...
Thanks nick...
Comments on game
I wonder if Bills brass kept him playing in the 2nd quarter to see if he could shake the rust off.
And it would be great to get Lynch some more work.
On Atlanta's side, Would like to know how DE Jamaal Anderson and CB Chris Houston fared - their top 2 draftees. Looks like LB Stephen Nicholas and S Daren Stone were quite active in the stats column.
