Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions - Open Game Thread
FINAL SCORE
Game Preview :: Pride of Detroit
Update [2007-8-30 21:49:25 by Brian G]: One play later, the Lions effectively end the game. The ensuing kickoff is fumbled by Kevin Kasper and John Wendling recovers, allowing the Bills to kill the clock. Pre-season over. Bring on the Broncos. Check back here early tomorrow morning for full analysis of the final pre-season matchup.
Update [2007-8-30 21:45:5 by Brian G]: Edwards has done it - driven the team down the field in a very effective manner and Lindell's short field goal (20 yards) gives the Bills the lead. I vouched for Craig Nall as the #2 QB yesterday, and still maintain that he would have won that battle had Edwards not performed so admirably tonight. I don't believe there's any question now that the rookie is Losman's primary backup.
Update [2007-8-30 21:19:14 by Brian G]: Drive stalls, but Edwards moved them far enough for a 40-yard Lindell field goal. He got a little lucky, however - on a third-and-five, a tipped pass was nearly intercepted. That's now 13 points for Edwards in about a quarter and a half of action.
Update [2007-8-30 21:11:27 by Brian G]: End of the third quarter; one more quarter of pre-season football to go! Trent Edwards continues to impress and has the Bills moving as the fourth quarter starts. He has been on the money all night.
Update [2007-8-30 20:45:25 by Brian G]: That was a heck of a drive by Trent Edwards and the Bills offense. The run game was solid (Shaud Williams had a few nice runs) and Edwards' poise showed through again. He made some great throws and has very good stats tonight. Fred Jackson scored on a toss play to the right; he muscled his way into the end zone on yet another tough run.
Update [2007-8-30 20:36:10 by Brian G]: Third quarter is underway. Surprise kick returner for the Bills, as Josh Scobey gets his first touch of the pre-season. He looked better than Fred Jackson at that duty.
Update [2007-8-30 20:21:15 by Brian G]: Trent Edwards is in at quarterback, and his first drive was the two-minute drill. He didn't disappoint - he looked poised in the pocket and picked up yardage efficiently to move the team into field goal position; a 45-yard Lindell field goal puts the Bills on the board as the first half ends.
Update [2007-8-30 20:12:26 by Brian G]: Coy Wire and George Wilson just got burned by O'Sullivan and Sean McHugh. The reserve tight end hit the seam, exploiting the Bills' poor coverage - touchdown Lions. The Bills, in general, have looked very bad this half.
Update [2007-8-30 20:3:10 by Brian G]: Problems continue to crop up for the Bills. Craig Nall has absolutely no time to throw and as a result his accuracy is erratic at best. Now he's fumbled a snap from Christian Gaddis, resulting in the second Bills turnover of the game.
Update [2007-8-30 19:52:38 by Brian G]: DiGiorgio has redeemed himself, making a nice second-down stop on an outside run play as the Bills don't break once again. Field goal is good by Hanson.
Update [2007-8-30 19:50:6 by Brian G]: Big mistake by John DiGiorgio. After a lucky stop by the defense, a punt hits DiGiorgio near the Bills goal line and the Lions recover. Lions are poised to score after the first turnover of the game.
Update [2007-8-30 19:36:23 by Brian G]: End of the first quarter. The first unit defense is already out (although Posluszny is still playing, along with a D-Lineman or two) and it's likely that the offense is done as well. Defense still looks shaky, as does the run game, but I was impressed with Losman's few throws tonight. Decisive, accurate and he moved the chains.
Update [2007-8-30 19:24:30 by Brian G]: After swapping possessions, the Lions drive down the field against mostly second-string Bills defenders, gaining big chunks of yards. But a diving pass breakup and a sack snuff out the drive; Jason Hanson hits a 51-yard FG.
Update [2007-8-30 19:6:29 by Brian G]: We have kickoff. The Lions will start with the ball; special teams coverage is outstanding as usual, as Thaddaeus Washington just had a nice thump on the kickoff coverage.
Welcome to the official Bills/Lions open game thread at Buffalo Rumblings. Here's the deal: I know for a fact that there are people out there who are "lurkers", i.e. they read this site but never comment. Well, tonight's the perfect opportunity to throw your hat in the ring - go ahead and create a free account to join in the discussion! I'll be here chatting all evening and live-blogging the game as I see it on television, and I'm looking for as much Bills talk here as possible. Tough luck there
Run game still looks pretty blah. O-line is getting blown backwards.

Figures - next play, the Bills get a sack. Poz and Ellison came on a blitz and the Lions' O-Line was outnumbered.

Holding
Second team O-Line: Pennington, Preston, Gaddis, Butler, Chambers. At this point, my belief is that those first four names will round out our depth chart.

Some guys standing out so far, IMO
Youboty has played pretty well. He looks good coming up and making open field tackles.
Justin Jenkins looked pretty good too. I hadn't even heard of the guy until tonight. We've seen nothing about him in any of Chris Brown's reports, so this is a surprise. Did we sign him recently?
Edwards has looked impressive again. He's a VERY accurate QB and looks to have a lively arm. I would still like seeing him throw the ball downfield a little more, but he's looked good regardless.
Everett has looked decent as well. He's made a few tough catches and looked fluid on the run and catch 1st down he had. I think he's locked up a spot tonight, even though I'm pretty certain he was making it prior to tonight.
Greer has been standing out too, but again it's because he's getting toasted. I would really feel much better if we could find someone better than him. Hopefully, as the 5th CB he'll only see the field on ST. If a decent CB is cut in the next few days, I would look long and hard at picking him up in place of Greer.

disagree a bit
If we do keep a 6th WR, it has to be Smith. He's a very heady football player, something Marv and Jauron love. I like the way he plays even though he's pretty limited physically. I'm not uncomfortable watching him play as he doesn't make mistakes.

kind of feel bad for him
Luckily for him, he's gotten the chance to show his stuff tonight and has looked pretty good. It's fun rooting for the guys who play hard always, rarely make mistakes and get as much out of their ability as they can.
