7 Days and Counting Until Bills Meet Broncos in Season Opener

In the wake of roster cuts and the bore-fest that is the assembly of the practice squad, I thought I'd throw out a little friendly reminder to all our lovely readers/community members today: we're one holiday-shortened week away from the 2007 regular season. Get pumped. I am.

So this is a preview of what you can expect to see here at Buffalo Rumblings over the next seven days. There will be lots of Bills talk, plenty of analysis of those Ponies from Colorado (a.k.a. the Denver Broncos) and a ton of hype. This is a very exciting time to be a Bills fan, so the goal is to further that excitement with our commentary here.

First, the boring stuff: as soon as the practice squad is made public (which should be sometime later on today), we'll have a quick analysis of those guys for you. Here's a quick prediction: C.J. Ah You and Derek Schouman will be two of those players. Yeah, I'm really going out on a limb there, I know. Now I really will go out on a limb: two current Bills on the active roster will be released today.

Over the off-season lull I ran a little mini-series called Unsung Heroes, where we took a look at some of the not-so-prominent-yet-very-important names on the Bills roster. In the same vein, we'll have a little spotlight time for some of Buffalo's most important players - the Role Players.

Oh, those Broncos. In preparation for the beating the Bills will give them a week from today, we're going to take a look at the team in-depth. Jay Cutler, Mike Shanahan and a new defensive scheme will be the focal points of the breakdowns. Oh, and we'll also have five ways the Bills can easily beat the Broncos - that will come a bit later on in the week as game day approaches.

Here's the mysterious parts of the week: coming probably Tuesday we'll have a special announcement or two to make in regards to the future of this site and the services we try to provide you, our loyal community members. This is a very exciting development (at least to me), so be sure to lurk around here all week so you don't miss the action.

I seriously dreamed that the Bills beat the Broncos 23-17 last night. We were down by a point with 4 minutes remaining. Losman hooked up with Peerless Price on a long play over the middle, and then Ryan Neufeld caught a short pass over the middle and rumbled into the end zone. (Yes, I really did dream about Ryan Neufeld scored that touchdown. I feel comfortable stating I'm the only Bills fan who wouldn't have Lynch, Evans or Parrish making that score.) A Terrence McGee pick of Jay Cutler ended the game. If that doesn't get you pumped for a season opener, I don't know what will.

Looking forward to this week - hope to see a lot of you around in the comments and diaries!

more cuts
I expect us to see a few more changes as well.  I think we look at a vet Guard (bye Preston), a DE (bye Powell?) and most definitely a DT (bye Jefferson).

I really really really have to believe we'll be looking at a DT. Jefferson was invisible all preseason and I'm stunned he made the roster. There are guys out there that are much better than him.

I would also like to investigate Lamont Thompson and Donovin Darius, two guys I'm surprised got cut. Thompson was starting for the Titans recently, so that's really stunned me. I would much rather have one of those guys as our 3rd safety over the likes of Wilson and Leonhard (yuck and double yuck). We need some talent back there for depth, not a severely limited player who makes no plays and a converted WR. I'm scared if Whitner or Simpson goes down.

K-
Leonhard, I don't blame you.  Wilson, are you crazy?  He made an unbelievable jump in ability and execution over this preseason.  He's gonna be close to our next Jason Peters, I'm predicting.

I'll let your Preston-hate go, because you're right on Jefferson.  Tim Anderson actually showed up.  I cannot really recall JJ doing so once.

About Jefferson
I only recall one play for him this pre-season: against Atlanta, in the third quarter I believe, he shed a blocker very well, penetrated and hit the Falcons back for a 2-yard loss. That literally is the only time I can remember seeing him on the field, let alone making a play.

Wilson
I am not discounting Wilson in any way and am pretty impressed with his transition.  Rather, I think we need an experienced talent back there because we aren't really sure if Wilson would be ready.  I just don't like Leonhard at all.

Yeah...
We've been talking about a clipboard-holding vet QB.  Can Leonard be a clipboard-holding S?  He's smart, I'll give him that...

I'm a lil' bit nervous when he sees non-ST playing time.  That's for sure.

I'd like (if no other S comes in) to see Wendling at FS backup and Wilson at SS before too long...  Wilson is learning FAST.
