2008 Buffalo Bills Free Agents

Often times, free agency is overblown in today's NFL. Big names that hit the open market are often times viewed as a quick fix to a problem, and many teams have spent million of dollars on highly-priced free agents only to field a mediocre team the following season. Former Bills GM Marv Levy, however, played to a slightly different tune. It is his belief that some of the more important signings a team can make are re-signing its own players.
Which, of course, brings us to this morning's topic. The Buffalo Bills have a long list of free agents this off-season, and there are talks that two to three of its established veterans should be given contract extensions as well. Keeping our community needs list in mind, it's time for us to put our GM (or COO) caps back on and decide which of the following players need to be given new contracts with the Bills. Which players are staying? Which players are moving on? You decide!
Under Contract, In Need of Renegotiation
The following players currently have deals with the Bills that are set to expire within the next couple of years:
WR Lee Evans: Technically, Evans is signed through 2010. However, his rookie deal has a voidable final season - something Evans will almost certainly exploit to either get an extension this off-season, or cash in on the open market in '09. Buffalo's top wideout would certainly garner a lot of interest as an unrestricted free agent; if the Bills are serious about keeping Evans long-term, look for contract extension talks before training camp.
LB Angelo Crowell: The most consistent performer on Buffalo's young defense, Crowell enters the final year of his current deal. If the Bills don't address linebacker this off-season - including re-signing Crowell - they may enter the '09 off-season with Keith Ellison as their best outside linebacker. The urgency to re-sign Crowell should be as high - if not higher - than the urgency to extend Evans.
Unrestricted Free Agents
These Bills players are set to hit the open market:
WR Sam Aiken: One of Buffalo's top special teams performers, he may not return due to Buffalo's strong interest in upgrading their receiving corps.
TE Michael Gaines: A nice in-season signing for the Bills, but the signing of Teyo Johnson may have signaled the end of Gaines' tenure with the Bills.
LB Mario Haggan: Another valuable special teamer, Haggan may be the one free agent "specialist" that the Bills bring back. He can play D in a pinch.
DE Anthony Hargrove: His suspension for the entire 2008 season means that he's done in Buffalo.
LB Leon Joe: Mid-season pickup that was on and off the roster a few times. Very little chance he'll be back.
TE Matt Murphy: A solid blocker, but the Bills have enough of those at tight end.
TE Ryan Neufeld: Five-year Bill is 32 and provides little value outside of special teams. Virtual certainty he'll be elsewhere next season.
S Bryan Scott: One of the Bills' more underrated defenders late in the season. He's only 26, and would make a great reserve/specialist.
LB Josh Stamer: If he's re-signed, we'll know just how much influence special teams coordinator Bobby April really has.
DE Al Wallace: Played one pre-season game before hitting IR. Has an outside chance of getting a contract, if only to be a training camp body.
CB Jason Webster: Injured in the season opener. May get a contract if the Bills are comfortable starting J. Greer once again.
OG Jason Whittle: Another injured veteran. With his McNally ties severed, it's questionable whether Whittle will get a new deal.
RB Shaud Williams: Cut, then re-signed late in the season, but was inactive. A goner.
Restricted Free Agents
The following players are free to sign with other teams, provided the Bills don't tender offers or don't match other teams' offers:
CB Dustin Fox: Elevated from the practice squad due to injury. Solid play on special teams.
DT Jason Jefferson: Amazing he's lasted two full seasons on the Bills' roster. Somewhat solid, very unspectacular.
S Jim Leonhard: Will almost certainly receive a good tender and be back with the club for training camp.
Exclusive Rights Free Agents
The following four Bills are Exclusive Rights Free Agents: LB Blake Costanzo, DT Corey Mace, TE Tim Massaquoi, WR Scott Mayle.
Have at it, folks!

Not much to choose from here
I've said it before that I would like to see Bryan Scott return, and that hasn't changed.A solid vet who can play both safety positions, is a good tackler, and provides great depth. I would prefer him to Leonhard, but I'm not sure the coaching staff feel the same way.
Of the 3 LBs on that list I would prefer Haggan, because as you say, he can play defense in a pinch. Stamer never sees the field unless it's a special teams play.
Other than those two I would really be fine without anybody else on this list returning.
One question, what is Terrence McGee's contract like? Is he another candidate for an extension?

Re: McGee, Stamer
Stamer did see the field, by the way - but only in goal line packages. And Buffalo's goal line D isn't great to begin with. Haggan has proven that he can play well - especially against the run - when he has to. He's a very good depth player, and I think it's important that the team bring him back.

I say extend Peters as well.
Signing Crowell is a must. To me, that should be the priority on this team, as of this moment.
Evans might not want to resign here; he may rather be wherever JP is (subtle dig at Lee for not being a team player this year). If Evans is to stay, what would you offer him? Surely, he's not TO or Moss kind of money, but he is in the next tier. I'd say that tier is what, maybe 5/6 million a year? Price and Reed got 2.5, so it's got to be way above that.
I'd also throw some loot at Greer. For a guy who struggled for a few years before making it, I think he'll jump at the chance to get some guaranteed money. I think it'd be a good value resigning.
I'd like to see Leonhard and Scott come back. I've mentioned before that the safety position was as rock solid as RB, provided of course, that those two are back?
I'm gonna vote for Haggan coming back too, for all of the reasons mentioned above.
I can also see Whittle coming back. I read an article the other day, and it seems he thinks it's all but a formality. We didn't see much of him last year, but it nevers hurts to have an experienced guy who can play all 3 spots, and who has a mean streak as well. Plus, he's cheap.
And Mckee, just look at the CB market. Why not lock him up a little longer, before he tries for Trufant, Samuels, Clements kind of money? Again, just being proactive.
Lastly, I'd try and get Fox and Webster signed too, just in case Yobouty does turn out to be a bust, which is the current path I think he's on...

Good call on Greer
I could see Whittle back, and that isn't a bad thing. If he can stay healthy, I think that could reduce our draft needs this year.

Greer
Yobouty, Webster, and Thomas are not the answers here.

Why sign Greer long term?
Don't you all remember how TERRIBLE he was before last season? I'm not saying he didn't improve, because he obviously did, but I really do NOT want to rely on him for more than nickel situations. And personally, nickel backs are a dime a dozen to me. What we really need is a true bonafide starting caliber CB opposite McGee.
Let Greer play out his deal and if we need a nickel next year, resign him for a couple seasons. Nobody else is really going to throw money his way....

You're right; Greer is nothing special.

But,
And by keeping guys happy, you might make it easier to get FAs, something the Sabres organization hasn't figured out.
One more thing - he is currently underpaid to be a Pro Bowl Tackle. There is no argument there. As much as I hate when guys don't want to finish their contracts, I am in favor of rewarding someone for excellent play.

Yes...
No debate that he's underpaid in terms of his Pro Bowl peers. That's a good thing for this team as it tries to end its playoff drought; why change that when Peters is happy playing under his current contract? If he makes a stink, then pay him, but only then. And Peters isn't a guy to do that.

Peter and the Extension
As for others to extend: I would say lets nail Crowell now this spring with an extension before he sees what a weak LB market pays out in 2010(too much for OK players, and way to much for marginal players, and he would be in the Good category, you do the math). We then take on Evan's contract this summer, and I would say that if Greer is playing well during the season, we look at an extension for him, paying him what a good nickel back makes, and not a penny more since that is his strength.
Otherwise, I like Haggan to resign just because you always need a Special Teams crazy who can also play D in a pinch. Also resigning Whittle, Scott, and Leonhard would all be A-Ok by me, they all fit needs depth wise, and we know what we have unlike a low round draftee. Otherwise, all the others can be filled with low round picks and UFA's after the draft.

Haggan or Stamer
We have enough draft picks to replace everyone else. In the process, we would probably get better. No need to waste dollars on players like that. Thanks for your efforts, hope you enjoyed Buffalo, but Bye!

Not even Scott?

Agreed
If I had to pick 5 from this list to return it would be:
1 Scott
2 Haggan
3 Leonhard
4 Whittle
5 Aiken or Stamer

Camp
All the RFAs and ERFAs will be likely be in camp. I would expect the Bills to bring back Scott, Haggan, Stamer, Murphy and two or three more of the UFAs to compete as well. Who will actually make the roster is anyone's guess.
If there is one player I don't expect back, it would be Jason Webster. He was brought in to be a one year stop-gap solution at corner and was awful during the preseason. His getting injured probably made the Bills a better team last year. The Bills have plenty of depth at cornerback, what they need is potential.

Resign
Gaines is a good blocker and an ok receiver. Resign him now and cut him later if we do upgrade the position further.
Haggan is good for ST, goalline and depth purposes. None of the other LB's are good for more than ST.
And Scott, we've talked about before, is definitely worth resigning. He's better than Leonhard and Wilson and is the only true SS backup we'd have (Wendling doesn't count until he actually sees the field).
I'm not sure Whittle would resign. He came here before because of McNally, but now with him gone who knows if he'd want to re-up. He would be a nice vet backup at multiple positions (see last years discussions).

My take on the FA List
TE Gaines - we definately need to sign him to a several year contract. He was fairly productive as a receiving threat once Trent was inserted into the line-up. He's a solid blocker and is physical enough to break tackles once he catches the ball. Definate yes.
LB Haggan - This is one is also going to be a yes. He's a solid special teamer and has performed well at LB when placed on the field. These are the type of people we need on SP. Solid performers and can play their actually position.
DE Hargrove - He should be let go because of his off the field issues in itself. He'll be suspended for the entire season anyway. He's a decent player on the field but has huge character issues.
LB Joe - This is just a straight no...no discussion needed.
TE Murphy - Don't resign because we should be drafting a TE in the 3rd round as a receiving threat...we have enough blockers.
S Scott - This is a tough one but I'm going to say yes. He was pretty productive filling in at SS when Whitner was moved to FS. He has more experience then Wendling but once Wendling gets more time with the team Scott should be gone.
LB Stamer - Stamer needs to go. He's an Aiken type of player; good on special teams but sucks on the field at his position.
DE Wallace - He needs to go. Granted Hargrove will be gone; we should be addressing this issue in the draft with one of our 3rd round picks.
CB Webster - Jason needs to be cut as well. Maybe keep him for training camp for a veteran prescense but he should definately not make the opening day roster.
OL Whittle - I think he should stay. He gives good veteran depth...Preston should be the odd man out on the line.
RB Williams - This is another no brainer...NO! Lynch, Jackson, Wright, and A-Train can handle the duties just fine. If A-Train even makes the roster.
Of Fox, Jefferson, and Leonhard...Leonhard is the only one worth signing. We have enough CB depth, especially since Fox barely saw playing time if any. Jefferson is pretty much worthless, we should be drafting a DT anyway. Leonhard is the smartest player on the team and is just an all around athlete! He needs to make this roster wheither for special teams purposes or as a FS back-up.
MY DRAFT ORDER:
- LB (CONNOR!!!)
- WR
- TE
- DE
- DT
- LB
- OL
- OL
- FB

my quick run-down
Re-sign:
Mario Haggen
Michael Gaines
Bryon Scott
Maybe resign:
Sam Aiken (depending on how many WR they bring in and Price's situation - probably a goner though)
Josh Stamer (same as WR - depends how many new faces they bring in - probably a goner)
Jason Whittle (would provide vertern depth at a cheap price so he probably could stay)
Goners:
Anthony Hargrove
Leon Joe
Matt Murphy
Ryan Neufeld
Al Wallace
Jason Webster
Shaud Williams
Restricted Free Agents
Maybe:
Jim Leonhard (if for no other reason becuase he has playing experience in the system)
goners:
Dustin Fox
Jason Jefferson

I'd only re-sign...
I'd offer a multi-year contract to Bryan Scott and a 1 year contract to Mario Haggan.
Contingencies:
I'd only bring back Michael Gaines if the idea is to cut Robert Royal, otherwise I think we already have our accident-prone, plodding, "blocking" tight end spot filled and a true starter is still needed.
I'd consider re-signing Whittle and Webster as stopgaps to 1 year contracts if the G/C and CB positions are not addressed in the draft. In any event, I wouldn't be looking at them until April.
Everyone else on this list needs to go.

What about Special teams?
by sireric on Feb 12, 2008 8:31 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Special Teams
Aiken: I feel like Justin Jenkins did more on special teams last year than Aiken anyway. If we're going to keep a wide receiver for special teams alone, I prefer the younger, cheaper, and more productive Justin Jenkins over Aiken.
Stamer: I don't think you can keep Stamer, Wire, and Haggen next season. I believe a starting OLB will be added and with Posluszny returning to the lineup, I think April has a good corp of backup linebackers to work with in Wire, Haggan, and now more extensive use of DiGiorgio and Ellison with their being relegated to backup status.
Hargrove: Suspended for season. Maybe the mysterious Copeland Bryan can replace his role on the coverage units.
Neufeld: Was inactive for most of the 2nd half of the season anyway. I'd let Schouman battle a 7th rounder for this roster spot next season with special teams play being the deciding factor.
Leonhard: Wendling's a force on special teams and needs to be active every game. With Simpson returning to lineup, April will certainly be able to get by with Wilson, Wendling, and Scott as major contributors and there's no way we could keep another safety.

Just say no to Aiken.
Back to Greer for a second, he's been a TC stud the last few years and never really got the chance to play during the season until he was forced into action by injuries. He played quite well by my standards, with the two factors holding him back being starting experience and height. One of those can be addressed, one can't. He's got track sprinter speed, so that's not a problem. He's also a ball hawk. He may or may not be a good fit in the slot, depending on the WR of the other team. So let him play and play attn to how his experience and height affects his play. If he continues to capably start, give him #2.5 CB money midseason over 3 or 4 years.
Bring Gaines back as an excellent #3.
Bring Scott back as an excellent #2 SS
Bring Haggan for his depth behind Crowell and ST play
Bring Whittle back as a vet at the 3 interior OL positions
Low tender for Fox who showed some potential as our dime back late in the season (Former 3rd round pick)
Why bring back Leonard if we have Whitner, Simpson, Wilson, Scott, and Wendling? Unless Wendling gets cut, no way we keep 6.
