Bills Release WR Peerless Price, Two Others

Peerless' second stint with Buffalo over (Getty Images)

[editor's note, by Brian Galliford] Buffalo Bills wide receiver Peerless Price, who in 2006 was signed to a four-year deal, has bee released by the club. Price, who spent most of the 2007 season on injured reserve with a neck injury, sees his second Bills stint cut short by two years.

Kurupt has it right in this diary, folks - the release of Price is a major sign that the Bills will be focusing the bulk of their early off-season efforts on upgrading the wide receiver position. This move frees up a nominal amount of cap room, and leaves the starting spot opposite Lee Evans wide open for a newcomer. Kurupt also mentioned in a diary last week that top targets include Arizona's Bryant Johnson and Jacksonville's Ernest Wilford; either receiver would diversify Buffalo's receiving corps and provide a significant upgrade over Price. Look for the team to address this position very early in the free agent signing period.

Good luck, Peerless. Your career may be in a tailspin, and you may be recovering from a serious injury, but I'll say that you were one of my favorite players to watch over the years - especially early this decade, lined up with Eric Moulds. I'll always remember your OT TD against the Vikings, and your tip-toe grab in the back of the end zone to beat the Texans. You had game. We'll miss you. End Note

Along with LB Kevin Harrison and DB EJ Underwood.

Guess it's pretty obvious that WR is a MAJOR priority this offseason. It's probably going to be the #1 goal of FA and then we'll see a draftee.  Just like we all hope for...

I bet the first signing will be a WR, hopefully it's not Drew Carter.

WOW
I thought that Price might have worked out when we first signed him a couple years ago. Well, it didn't work out  and I am glad our staff sees that and is moving on. Our staff knows that our passing game was a weakness last year with and without Price and the releasing of him confirms that they are looking to improve over what we have.

Now we just opened some room for a #2 WR. I can't wait to see
#1 Evans
#2 Any impact WR
#3 Reed
#4 Parrish

Let me tell you what... try and cover all four of these guys and Lynch or Jackson out of the backfield. Our line can hold up on blitzes to give Edwards enough time to get the ball out.

I AM EXTREMELY ECXITED

Yep I love the 1-4,
It looks awefully good as long as they get that imapct #2.

Well
I don't see him playing in the league really again unless he is a ST's contributor.  I mean the money we gave him 4 yrs $10 million?  He wasn't worth that .

Price was also one of my fav players
It sucked that he left for big money.  It sucked that he came back and did nothing.  And now it sucks that he is being released.  But it's for the best.

Good Luck Peerless
He was a good player back in the day lined up alongside Moulds, and if he had never left, I think the Bills fortunes would have been quite different by now.

But he did, and he was never the same after being exposed as only a good number 2 wideout and not a #1. It was a shame his time ended due to injury, but its a business and I wish him the best.

So how done was Pat Williams when we let him go Tommie boy??? Stick a fork in him level right?

No surprise here
Did anyone here actually think he was gonna beat out anyone in training camp and make this team?  We all knew he was going to be cut and the Bills are smart to do it now.  If they waited for camp to start and Price was still hurt they would have had to give him an injury settlement.  This is a smart move by a team that is hopefully looking to upgrade the reciever position.

I am a little surprised about Harrison and Underwood.  Are they no longer eligible for the practice squad?  Or did the organization just not like them at all.  I figured the Bills would bring all the players into camp that they could.

Price's impact on Salary cap???
I know the 4 year - 10 million does not get broken down into 2.5 million year, but how does this affect our salary cap?

Are we going to have a couple million more a year for the next two years since we wont have to pay him?

Classy move
To release him right out of the gates and give him ample time to contemplate his career, make himself available, and most especially, not be lead on by the Bills FO.

FA and the latest Mayock mock
Now, with this move...if we were to get Wilford...which I see as a definite possibility, and then take Malcolm Kelly as our #11 pick overall, then we have a stacked wide receiver core. However, the WR class is deep, so we might get a top FA wideout and then go another direction in the first round and then take a wr in the 2nd.
Either way, if we have three receivers ahead of Josh Reed, and maybe even 4 with Parrish, then I am very happy, and so should everyone else. Throw in a TE, and this offense will have great ptential
The Bills can win every game

I really like Josh Reed as a #3 reciever,
and Im not sure why every one is so down on that.  He has very good hands okay speed and as soon as a legit #2 comes in Josh will be able to get open more.  He just makes some really nice plays.  If we draft a future wideout and develop him it would probably be to replace Evans.  Just my opinion though.

Based on what?
How do you figure Reed will be able to get open more when another receiver is added?  Reed's been in the league 6 seasons.  He's started, played on the outside, played in the slot, played in 3, 4 and 5 wideout sets, two tight end sets, etc.  In other words, every variable you could throw at him is right there on film for all to see.  8 TDs in 6 years and 400 yards a season is not good enough for someone who's in the regular lineup each season.  After how many years of inept offense does Reed's role in the offense finally go to someone else?  My hope is that we grab a legitimate starting caliber play-making veteran receiver to start opposite Evans (not someone else's trash; I'd say worst case: Hackett or Stallworth, best case: Walker or Williams) and draft a receiver in the 2nd or 3rd round that beats out Reed for his job in camp.  Given Reed's track record, the rookie wouldn't have all that much catching up to reach this modest goal.

I like Reed more than Price.
To be fair, no WR on the current roster has really seen efficient play from the QB, except Bledsoe and his 1/2 of a good year.

I think Reed and Parrish fill the slot WR and fourth WR role perfectly.  They are just not meant to be a #2.  Reed had 33 first downs last year.  That's not a bad number.

Dropping Price was a no brainer.  Personally, I really never cared for him much, although I still do feel sympathy for any athlete whose career is cut short by injury.  I thought he was/is a one trick pony, something I'm fearful Evans is turning in to.

If you ask me what my defining moment of Price is, it came during the first week of games after 9/11.  Henry fumbles around the Pittsburgh twenty, they recover and take it to the house.  Price has a chance to make a diving tackle at around the ten, and then he pulls up.  I don't care if he had the chance or not; at least you should try.  He didn't.

This move has absolutely no effect on what the Bills will do in FA or the draft.  This move actualy happened the day Price was placed on IR last year, for all intents and purposes.

Just like yesterday, Buffalo still has to fill a need at the #2 WR spot.  However, I still think improved QB play, as well as competent play calling will lessen the need to use significant resources on the position.  Basically, I'm sticking to the game plan I've had for the team, and that is to sign a 2nd tier FA, and draft a developmental guy in the mid stages of the draft.

This changes nothing
Kaisertown said it best, I'm more shocked about Harrison, I thought they would at least bring him to camp. Price was done when he went on IR, I don't think anybody expected him to be on the roster when the '08 season starts.

Price was a solid Bill, his biggest mistake was going to Atlanta, where he had Mike Vick as his QB. If he had stayed in Buffalo, and kept that offense together, who knows how thing would have turned out.

Man do I miss #78

Peerless and Willis
'If he had stayed in Buffalo, and kept that offense together, who knows how thing would have turned out.'

Lol if he had stayed in Buffalo, we would never have gotten Willis McGahee, and been stuck with that damn Travis Henry guy who could only run for 1400 yds on a broken leg!

Reed and Parrish
Are excellent #3 and #4 options.  Could be one of the best set of reserves in the league.  Although we've seen that Parrish can't effectively handle being an every down WR, we also know he is as explosive and dangerous in the open field as they come, and also has respectable hands.

Reed was our most consistent threat this year.  I see him as a Wayne Chrebet for us.  Not flashy in any regard, but very tough, a 3rd down specialist, great hands over the middle, and a great blocker.

All we need is one, and ONLY one legitimate WR this offseason, and releasing Price made that clear.
