Potential Bills Free Agent: TE Ben Troupe

Troupe could complement Royal well (Photo Source)

Former Falcon Alge Crumpler may be the hot name on the market in terms of free agent tight ends - and that's certainly warranted - but if the Buffalo Bills have proven anything over the past two years, they are bargain shoppers when it comes to free agency. Sure, they shelled out big money to three offensive linemen last year, but as far as the "popular" names went, the Bills were cautious shoppers. Keeping the relatively anonymous signing of TE Teyo Johnson in mind, it's unlikely to believe that the Bills will further bolster their tight end ranks with a big-name signing at the position.

One intriguing free agent option, should the Bills choose to further bolster the position with a veteran, is Titan Ben Troupe. The former second-round pick in the 2004 draft entered the league with plenty of hype, but has not produced up to his talent level. Despite that lack of productivity, he remains one of the most athletically gifted tight ends in the league, and a change of scenery may allow him to come closer to realizing his potential.

Music City Miracles' Take
We owe Jimmy of Music City Miracles a stiff drink - he deserves one after granting us a third interview on a Titan free agent this week. I asked him three questions about Troupe's tenure as a Titan, and he obliged with, once again, some intriguing responses...

Troupe was highly touted coming out of college. What has hindered him from reaching his full potential?

In the beginning he was hindered because it took him a long time to learn the offense. He had a 55 catch season in his 2nd year, but missed the final 6 games of his third season with a foot injury. A couple of drops early this past season made the coaches lose confidence in him. His drops seem to just come from a lack of concentration. There is no doubt that he has all the physical tools to be a good player.

When Bo Scaife went down right before the playoffs, how adequately did you think Troupe filled his shoes?

Troupe showed that he can make plays in the passing game, but he also showed his inability to block. He is a better receiver and athlete than Scaife, but Scaife is a much better blocker.

How was Troupe best utilized? Was he better as a receiver releasing from the line, or did the Titans have more success when they split him into the slot?

He is better from the slot because he struggled to get a clean release when he started on the line. If he can get matched up in the slot on a linebacker or safety, he will win almost every time.

Discussion Time
Troupe is an incredibly intriguing option. He was very productive in his first two seasons, totaling 88 receptions in a pretty prominent role. The last two seasons have been disappointments as Troupe has battled nagging (but not debilitating) injuries and the drops - which Jimmy alluded to. But as Jimmy mentioned, the kid has world-class athleticism, and where he lacks (blocking), the Bills are solid. He has the type of athleticism that you look for in an elite tight end, and he has the ability to turn routine catches into big plays. Alge Crumpler may be the big name, but if the Bills are looking for a much cheaper player who could have an equally big impact for the long haul (Troupe is only 25), Troupe may be just the man for the job.

OK. I've laid it on the line as far as Troupe goes; now it's your turn. Leave your thoughts and opinions on Troupe, Buffalo's tight end situation, and a potential Troupe signing in the comments section. And now, for the grand finale, Troupe's career statistics:

Definitely
Should be looked at as a very viable option, you gotta love what was said about him having world class athleticism. Needs to fiz those drop problems from the last couple years. I would have to give this guy an endorsement and he is our type of FA target. We should take a look into Troupe without a doubt.

Drop issues
I attribute those to the fact that he couldn't buy his way up the depth chart - he may have been pressing trying to earn more playing time. He's got some growing up to do, but he's a hard-working guy with a world of talent. He deserves a shot.

Yes intriging,
however, he seems like a second choice.  Is Crumpler out of reach?  I know the Bills are cheap.  But to get Crumpler and Corey Willimas out of FA would cost about the same as what they spent last year on O line.  It would really help both sides of the ball and relieve a lot of pressure on the draft, as we could then afford to go after a LB (1st), a CB or DE (2nd and 3rd) and another TE in the third, then get a project WR in the 5th and from there build depth.

Re: Crumpler "out of reach"
No, I don't think Crumpler is out of reach. I just think that the Bills will go after the "big names" at wideout and defensive tackle; don't forget that there are teams who will be hot on Crumpler's tail, too (Carolina and Tampa Bay, specifically). Troupe, to me, is a far more realistic option - but yes, he ranks #2 behind Crumpler in my book.

Re: Crumpler "out of reach"
I don't think Crumpler is out of reach either. But I agree that there will be a ton of intrest in him, and it may be a better option for the Bills to get a younger, cheaper player like Troupe.
After all the Bills have a lot of cap room, but it's not a bottomless pit either.

Agreed
but why settle, I realize it is big money, but they have to "go for the gold", if you will at some point.  Isn't that what they did last year with the O-line?  I don't think that it is a stretch for them to spend some money on serious talent.  I do agree with you that there will be a lot of teams after Crumpler, but why not aim high for now?

No reason not to
I'm posting this Troupe article because a) I haven't had time to set up an interview about Crumpler, and b) there's value in looking for underrated Plan B players. :)

I was also noticing
that two positions on our community needs list, in the top six, have no FA's at all.  Nothing for LB or CB, shich is leading me to believe that these are draft positions.  Both being 1st and 2nd rounders depending on value at the time.  Am I correct?

Yes and no
We're working on it. We just started to post these interviews this week (we got through 8 of them), and we've got a couple more weeks to get through. Linebackers and corners are coming - and we've got some names to go over. :)

love the stat lines
They add a nice touch, and give you an idea of how durable, consistant, and productive the player has been. Like with Troupe, you can see that he has the ability to perform at this level, he did it his first two years.
One thing that does jump out at me is that he missed 9 games in his first three years, and the year that he was healthy, he didn't contribute. Makes me think that he might be a little fraglie. Just a thought.

Jimmy
addressed that in the interview though. He mentioned the six games he missed in his third year, and the drops/lack of confidence from the coaches that hamstrung him this past season. Things haven't gone well for him - but the two years before that, he was one of the more productive young tight ends in the league.

Troupe
I think Ben Troupe would be a nice, lower level signing with big upside. However, is he really going to improve the position that much? Since he doesn't really add much as a blocker, nor is he a great receiver, would we really be improving the O? Let's say we added Troupe and a rookie (or I suppose Teyo Johnson)...Would we really be any better at TE?

I actually think I might rather resign Gaines due to his blocking skills and somewhat respectable receiving skills and picking a young, talented TE in the draft.  Adding Troupe might mean we need to have another respectable blocking TE on the team...
