Shaun Rogers - being moved soon

per rotoworld: http://rotoworld.com/Content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=1819

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Lions will trade DT Shaun Rogers within the next week.

Trades can't be executed until the free agency period begins on February 29. Schefter says at least four teams have shown strong interest in Rogers, whose skill set compares favorably to both Glenn Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis. Rogers has his ups and downs, but most premier interior linemen do. The Lions should be able to get at least a second-round pick for the 28-year-old.

----------

Do you think the Bills would be one of the teams interested in Rogers?  Prior to Corey Williams getting tagged I would have said no, now - all bets are off, especially with his connection to Jauron.

Why would he be such a good fit?

He's young. 28 years old.

He has the "size" jauron has been talking about. 345 pounds.

His size doesn't compromise his ability to get to the QB.  7 sacks in '07.

P.S. he signed a 6 year, $43 million contract in '05, so he still has 3 years left on his deal with Detroit.

P.P.S. Some reports indicate that Detroit is more interested in players for Rogers rather then draft picks.  FYI, according to drafttek Detroit's biggest needs are (in order) DE, ILB, CB and RB.  Any expendable players on the Bills?  Digorgio?  Kelsey? Greer? Jackson?

What do you think?

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

What I'd be willing to depart with...
I'd be happy giving up a second round pick this year and either JP Losman or a mid round pick next year for Rogers.

It'd be a dream come true if the Bills could move Kelsey and his large contract to Detroit for Roy Williams.  Kelsey and a 4th for Rogers?  That is how most of you could get me on the "DE at 11" bandwagon.

Or heck how about Chris Kelsey, and our 2nd and 5th round picks in '08 for Shaun Rogers and Roy Williams?!

Okay, okay, I'm done dreaming.  Bottom line though, I would give up a lot to make a deal for Rogers.

I sure we have
Inquired about Shaun Rogers. I think he is just what we're looking for. I would give up a third no problem for this guy.

Rogers
I've mentioned earlier that I would like to get Rogers for the right price. It all depends on how he can Jauron interacted in Detroit. Rogers has a lot of problems, motivational and attitude, but if Jauron feels like he can be successful in Buffalo I am guessing we will make a run. I would give up a 3rd, maybe not a 2nd.

Potential cost for Rogers
Peter King reported in yesterday's report from the combine at SI.com link here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/peter_king/02/22/combine/index.html

King thinks that Marinelli is so desperate to unload him (and this is Matt Millen we are talking about here), that a 4th pick or something around there could nab him. I think a 4th along with either Kelsay or Greer could do the job. Detroit needs DE's and CB's (after trading Dre' Bly last year) the worst on the defensive side. We having nothing they want offensively right now as the only real chip we got is Losman, and Detroit feels they have a good #2 QB already.

So how done was Pat Williams when we let him go Tommie boy??? Stick a fork in him level right?

by WABillsfan on Feb 23, 2008 4:20 AM EST reply actions

WA
But why trade Greer?

It's not like we are stocked at CB.  We already need a starting CB, no need to add nickel CB to the list.

I saw this
And my heart leapt. You know that Jauron has to have inquired... if we can land this guy (and restructure his deal, because that would be a huge priority), it could very well solve a whole bunch of our questions defensively. Especially if the player's coach can keep Rogers' weight down and motivation up.

I don't normally get over-excited about potential player acquisitions, because anything can happen, but I think this trade has a very real chance of going down.

Maybe I like Jauron too much.
But I think this is a potential example of how he could influence a player to come to Buffalo.  He is universally liked and respected by all.  And considering how Rogers played under DJ, you'd almost have to think he made his agent inquire about a trade to Buffalo as well.

Now the trick is to figure out if Jauron likes him.

Shaun Rogers
Jauron calls Rogers rare

Coach Dick Jauron, the Lions' defensive coordinator both seasons Rogers has been named to the NFC Pro Bowl team, said, "At times he has been phenomenal, and then most of the time he has been outstanding ... He has a rare form of size he really is a giant man and he is extremely quick and athletic, maybe more so than about anybody I have been around."

Thanks for getting that quote. Nice find.
Any chance you have the date it was made?  Just curious.  If DJ likes this Rogers, then no way am I going to argue against.

by krytime on Feb 23, 2008 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Actually...
Here are the full quotes from Dick Jauron regarding Shaun Rogers from a December 21, 2005 post-practice transcript:

On DT Shaun Rogers:

"Shaun, at times he has been phenomenal and then most of the time he has been, I would say, outstanding. He is a very difficult player to contend with offensively just because he has a rare form of size - he really is a giant man - and he is extremely quick and athletic. Maybe more so than about anybody I have been around. He is a rare player and I believe he is just going to get better."

On DT Shaun Rogers and if he has any similarities to Reggie White athletically:

"I would say that he does. I need to qualify that obviously because Reggie White was a rare breed and I worked in the secondary so I didn't have the overview of the defense. I certainly had a great appreciation for Reggie White. To be perfectly honest, Larry Brooks would be a great guy to talk about them because he coached both of them. Reggie did a lot of phenomenal things - we have all seen the clips. But at times you see that power in Shaun - you will see him pick up a man and take him to the ball and just take him to the quarterback and we are talking about 300-pound men. I wouldn't say it is out of the realm of possibility."

How good do you want the Bills to be?

by Fort Worth on Feb 23, 2008 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

We have to be one of the 4 teams....
No doubt in my mind we have inquired about him.

If they are desperate to unload him, I'd offer a 4th this year and a future pick.  A 2nd is way too high for a guy with a questionable desire, weight issues and a hefty salary. I'm also a little hesitent to offer one of our high 3rd's this year too. Rogers performing at a high level is no guarantee, so a top 75 pick is risky.

Offer them a 4th straight up.  If they say no, throw in a 4th or 5th next year that can move up based on performance. If they are that desperate to dump him, they may jump at that.  Of course, we may have to give up a 3rd this year to get him if there is a lot of interest.  In the end, I bet he goes to Denver...

Rogers trade
I think it is a real possibility but he is making 7 million dollars a year and that is extremely high for a potential (Mike Williams). The one thing Bills players have in common is that they have a lot of heart and play hard.

Anyway, I think that we can land Rogers for exchanging our 1 round picks and one of our 5th round picks. This would allow us to still get any of our needs in the 15th spot. We might not land Rivers, but I am sure Kelly, Connor, Harvey, Balmer should all be there at 15. For the Lions, they would be able to unload salary and land the top OLD of the draft in Rivers.

contract
1/1/2005: Signed a six-year, $43 million contract. The deal included a $15 million signing bonus. 2008: $4.25 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due 3/2), 2009: $5.25 million, 2010: $7 million, 2011: Free Agent

Rogers isn't a $7M a year player until 2010, at which point a team probably has renegotiated his deal to add a few more years or would cut him.  We wouldn't have to worry about any of his signing bonus, but the $1M roster bonus might kick in and is the reason Detroit will likely deal him by this time next week.

by Kurupt on Feb 23, 2008 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly
And you aren't just trading for potential.  Rogers had 7 sacks last season.  He is exactly what we need.  A disruptive force in the middle of the line.  Rogers has two years of experience with DJ and played in a similiar system in Detroit.  If it took our second round pick to get him, I wouldn't hesitate to do it.  I would even be willing to throw in a player like Dwayne Wright or Ashton Youboty if it came down to it.

by kaisertown on Feb 23, 2008 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Those are some real deal breakers
While we at it why don't we throw in Tim Massaquoi? I think the old addage is, you have to give up something in order to get something. I'm not sure a borderline bust CB, or a RB who couldn't pass an undrafted free agent on the depth chart, classify as "something".

Something tells me it's not going to cost that much. I'm thinking 4th rounder will get it done, but hey I've been wrong before.

Man do I miss #78

by sireric on Feb 23, 2008 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed
A 4th, and maybe a future pick, and I'd do it in a heartbeat.  All indications point to Detroit just hoping to get rid of him. They will need to before March 2nd, so they don't have to pay his roster bonus.  Hopefully, our offer beats the other ones, but I really don't know if I want to give up much high that what I mentioned...
~K

by Kurupt on Feb 23, 2008 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Massaquoi is a little facetious
Tatum Bell and TJ Duckett probably won't be back with Detroit next year and Kevin Jones and Brian Calhoun have suffered serious injuries in the last couple of seasons.  The Lions will likely add two running backs during the offseason.  One that they hope can contribute and one for depth.  Wright was a 4th round pick just last year and would probably go in the 4th or 5th this year.  The Draft may be deep at running back, but it is actually a very short on power between the tackles RBs.

Can you name a cornerback on the Lions roster?  Stanley Wilson, Fernando Bryant, Travis Fisher, Keith Smith, Devonte Edwards and Ramzee Robinson isn't exatly an impressive list.  Youboty may be a potential bust, but he also has the potential to be an above average starter.  At 23 years old Youboty would be the youngest cornerback on the Lions roster.  He is the same age as a lot of the players in the draft and like Wright would probably be drafted in the 4th round if he were in the draft.

How do these guys not have any value?  I'm not saying I would try to trade them straight up for Rogers.  But if the draft pick the Bills offer isn't enough, Wright or Youboty would definitely sweeten the pot.

by kaisertown on Feb 24, 2008 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I like your thought here.
I think that's a very reasonable scenario.  You might have to bump that up to a fourth.

Two AFC teams in the same division interested...
Booth Newspapers reports the Lions would prefer to trade DT Shaun Rogers out of the NFC.

A source tells beat writer Tom Kowalski that two AFC clubs, both in the same division, have emerged as the "frontrunners" to acquire Rogers. We suspect the teams are the Raiders and the Broncos.

i thought about this last night...
It has been rumored that two AFC teams in the same division are the front-runners to acquire Rogers.  At first glance, the speculation that the Raiders and Broncos are those two teams makes sense, especially since the Broncos have already been reported as one of the teams interested in Rogers.

However, other AFC teams have major needs in acquiring a DT.  Those teams include two AFC North teams (Cleveland and Cincy) and three AFC East teams (Buffalo, Miami, and NJ Jets).

Although Denver and Oakland still make the most logical sense, I still beleive it's a strong possibility that those two teams could come from the AFC East.  It's been reported that Parcelles thinks highly of Rogers and we all know Jauron's connection with him.  It will be interesting to see what transpires over the next week.

Was just thinking the same thing.....
All of the teams that you mentioned could and probably do have at least some interest in Rogers. Two of the first teams that came to mind for me that was Bills, and Dolphins. Probably because I am being really optimistic of Roger's ties to Jauron helping us bring him in, but I refuse to change my beliefs until something happens. Yes it definitely could be the Radiers, Broncos, Bengals, or Browns, but lets hope its the AFC East and either the Bills/Dolphins or Bills/Jets!

OMG
I was away from the internet for a day and now I see this and I just about crapped my pants.  I would love life is we could snag up Rogers.  We have the picks (arsenal) so the only question has to be if we can negotiate a deal with him and his agent if the Bills are interested.  This would be so big.

I will be hoping for Rogers BIG TIME!
