Keller steals the show in TE workouts (Ben Drinkut, Purdue Exponent)

Why do I love college? Well, the education is nice, and the lifestyle is nicer, but I love college because I get the NFL Network here. I've tuned in to the draft prospect workouts all morning - keeping an eye on players that y'all mention frequently as potential fits for our Buffalo Bills - and for the most part, I haven't been disappointed. Today, O-Linemen and Tight Ends were working out, while defensive linemen and linebackers were weighing in.

The quick overview: I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the linemen because, well, the Bills are pretty much set up front. You're going to hear a lot about the tremendous athleticism of this group of tight ends; these guys are flat-out freaks of nature. Finally, there are a couple of interesting tidbits from D-Line weigh-ins that you won't want to miss...

O-Line
This, folks, was the Jake Long show. The Michigan tackle (who lifted well yesterday) solidified his status as a Top-5 pick, running well, lifting better and showing the type of athleticism that makes a franchise left tackle. Virginia guard Branden Albert also moved around well, and he probably solidified a first-round selection for himself. This draft, as most of you know, is deep in athleticism at tackle; therefore, when Pitt's Jeff Otah ran just under 5.6, he probably cost himself a half-round (at least). This is a deep group, so if the Bills are looking for some depth, it's there for the taking in the middle rounds.

Tight Ends
Last year, tight end Greg Olsen (who would later be a first-round draft pick of the Bears) threw together an outstanding Combine workout to boost his draft stock. Who did that this year? That would be Purdue's Dustin Keller. We knew that Keller was highly athletic, but when he ran a 4.53 and jumped 38", we saw a truly special athlete. But Keller wasn't the only solid performer at tight end, as Kellen Davis (4.58), Martellus Bennett (4.69), and Jacob Tamme (4.57) also ran extremely well, or at least better than expected. USC's Fred Davis did not run, but did positional drills, where he didn't blow anyone away - in fact, he dropped a few easy passes. Missouri's Martin Rucker did not work out.

What blows me away is the sheer depth of this position. We knew it was deep, but when guys like Brad Cottam (4.68), Gary Barnidge (4.63) and Craig Stevens (4.62) perform as well as they did, it only adds to what is already great depth. There were really only two disappointments at the position - Texas' Jermichael Finley only ran a 4.82 (though he looked very fluid in positional drills and was a bit more consistent than expected), and Notre Dame's John Carlson could only muster a 4.89. Carlson is a solid tight end, to be sure, but he may not have the athleticism to stretch the middle of the field like most of his draft mates.

D-Line
Defensive linemen do not work out until Monday, but they weighed in today, and there were some surprises. Foremost among those is Florida DE Derrick Harvey, who is listed at 262 pounds at NFL Draft Countdown but weighed in at a whopping 291. If he can run well at that weight, he might just shoot past Vernon Gholston (266) as the top defensive end available.

For the inside men, several have bulked up from their listed weights: Sedrick Ellis is up to 309 from 285; Kentwan Balmer is up to 308 from 295; and Trevor Laws is up to 304 from 295. Again, these guys have not worked out yet, but they're already making waves. It's going to be very interesting to see how they run and perform in position drills on Monday, considering the Bills' needs on their interior defensive line.

Note: all 40 times listed are unofficial.

Stay tuned to Buffalo Rumblings for more Combine reports (wide receivers work out tomorrow), as well as a big announcement about future content on the site!

Update [2008-2-24 11:49:26 by Brian Galliford]: You gotta love NFL Network typos... or my general lack of reading comprehension. A correction to the Derrick Harvey weigh-in: he tipped the scales at 271 pounds. While I check my reading glasses, I'll maintain that it said 291 on NFLN yesterday... you can choose to believe me or not. :)

What....the.....
Derrick, what is going on man?  291 lbs?!?!  Lay off the Big Macs buddy....

If he runs under 4.8, I'm thrilled.  How did he look?  Was he stronger looking, or did he look like he's from Wisconsin?

If his weight is due to bulking up throughout the past 6-8 months and not from being lazy and overeating, then Harvey should be #1 on a lot of teams lists.  I wonder what weight he played at during the season....can't be the 260 number. Probably more like 275 if this isn't fat he's added.

Anybody have any questions as to whether he's a LB or DE, now?

I'm going to be SO disappointed if he runs poorly.....

Didn't actually see Harvey
Only saw a flash of him, and he had a sweatshirt on. Guess we'll have to wait until Monday for that.

Also....
I love Keller, but now he's probably going to go a little earlier than he should.  He's a little smaller than the other TE's, so his speed will be his major asset for teams, and right now they're probably drooling over him.  I was hoping he could be an option in the 3rd for us. What did he measure in at, sizewise?
Tamme, too?

A little disappointed in Finley, but he's still a very good receiving prospect and very athletic. Hopefully, he runs again at OU's pro day.

I love Bennett too, but he's probably a 2nd rounder.  I'm hoping TE is addressed in the 3rd, but I could live with him in the 2nd.

Missed the weigh-ins
I missed the TE weigh-ins, though the only thing I recall is that Keller weighed in at 242. Looking for Tamme weigh-in now...

Tamme
NFL | Tamme weighs in at NFL Scouting Combine
Thu, 21 Feb 2008 12:50:22 -0800

University of Kentucky TE Jacob Tamme weighed in at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine Thursday, Feb. 21, at 6-foot-3 1/2 and 236 pounds. Tamme plans to put on five or six pounds and will participate in all the events at the combine.

Keller
blown away by his performance today.  I'm getting really excited about this year's TE class.  Finely, Keller, and Bennett are three of my favorites so far.

Dissappointing day for Davis and Carlson.

What a day....
The TE class is DEEP and it is for sure that we are going to get quite a TE in this draft. I was dissapointed in Carlson's time, but really really impressed by Dustin Keller, and Jacob Tamme. One kid who looked good and will benefit is Cottam, but I am not sold....He can't stay healthy! I've said all along that Bennet is my favorite and he did nothing to show me otherwise. As far as DE... Harvery, Merling, and Campbell are all huge I can't wait to see what they all run. And even if Harvey can pass Gholston he will not be the number 1 at DE as that title goes to Chris Long without a doubt.

Actually...
... Merline only weighed in at 276. That's big, but he's actually lost a little weight.

I gotta see Harvey at 291.
If he can play at that weight with the speed he has shown, it might throw my whole off season plans for a loop.  I mean, 291 is "point of attack kind of weight."  Then add in the way he runs.  Good Lord; what a freak...

Or is he another Mamula?

Rethinking Harvey at #11 are we?
Mamula weighed like 195, I'm not worried about Harvey being a Mike Mamula. (I wonder what it's like to have your name be synonomis with draft bust.)
Man do I miss #78

Harvey
Now let's not get ahead of ourselves.  But, did you even think he could get that big?  I hope it's not "fake" weight, know what I mean?  But if he is a solid 291, and can still move like he does on the highlight videos, then he's simply a freak, and should be going in the top 10 easily.

Yeah, that does stink for Mamula.  But he did laugh all the way to the bank.  On a side note, I dated his older sister.  Stupid me for not sticking around long enough for him to cash that original signing bonus!

Just watched some of the Combine....
Some of those TE's look really good catching the ball.

Keller looks great out there and is a smooth athlete.  I've like what I've seen of Finley, though his speed is a little concerning.  He does look fluid and quick though. The guy I've been most impressed with is Kellen Davis. His receiving abilities look much, much better than I thought they'd be.  He looks to have great hands, body control and is pretty athletic.  I wouldn't mind grabbing that guy in the 4th round if we pass on a TE until then.

I was pretty disappointed watching Fred Davis. He looked pretty bad out there. I think the guys we can get in the 3rd or the 4th round can be just as good and productive as Davis.  I'm not sure taking a TE prior to the 3rd round is the best move we can make.  There's a lot of good mid round prospects that look like they'll have a big impact on an offense.

I'm not sure

271 makes more sense
291 would have been outrageous.  Those 10-15 pounds that he added still make a huge difference though.  I am starting to come around on him.  I still don't have him as a top 15 guy, but I would be ok if the Bills took him.

About the tight ends.  Keller is only 6'2' and 242 pounds.  He is more of an H-back and i don't think he is a guy the Bills will be all that interested in.  Fred Davis has great hands on film and a few nervous drops won't hurt him one bit.  He is still the best TE in this draft and if he times well at his pro day he is still a first round calibur player.  Everyone knew Carlson would run slow and he did.  He is still a third round prospect.  Finley was a bigger let down for me.  He isn't a blocker so he needs to be the athelte that people think he is.  If Martellus Bennett is gone, Brad Cottam could be the best fit at TE for the Bills in the third round.

Also I was dead wrong about Limas Sweed.  He ran in the 4.4s today.  I now like him more than Malcolm Kelly.

Darren McFadden ran a 4.27!

Agree with
Everything you said except Cottam, the kid can not stay healthy he only played 2 games this year and scored 1 TD in his career!Harvey is a beast, trust me, I have never been sold on Kelly, but Sweed was a very pleasant surprise. I'm with you on Finley, and I have said all along Bennnet is my favorite for the Bills!!

Cottam's injury history
Is way overblown.  He was in a car accident in 2005 and needed several surgeries.  He missed all of 05 and part of 06 with injuries sustained during the crash.  He hurt his wrist this year diving for a ball in practice and again needed surgery.  It was his only major injury sustained while playing football.  He just got a good medical report at the combine.  Not that it matters, but he actually had 2 career TDs.  Part of his lack of statistical success is also related to the fact that he is a great blocker and Tennessee didn't always have him out running routes.

by kaisertown on Feb 24, 2008 5:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

On the contrary
I think an athletic, H-Back type tight end is exactly what the Bills are looking for. They've already got a couple of the in-line guys in Robert Royal and Michael Gaines (if he's re-signed); with Teyo Johnson more of a "move/flex" tight end, I think the Bills will look for exactly that type of athlete that can hurt defenses with his athleticism from several positions on the field. I don't see Derek Schouman as that type of player; Keller could be great in that role, however.

maybe
But with Keller's size and lack or blocking ability you can't use him as a tight end at all.  He will play in the backfield on pass downs and split out as a reciever.  If you are going to have that kind of player, then why even have a fullback on the roster?  Part of my reasoning for not having an H-back on the team is the roster crunch.  If you are going to use a fullback then you need two on the roster.  This only allows you to carry three tight ends.  If the Bills were to sustain injuries at TE, Keller simply couldn't come in and be a viable tight end.  The Bills would have to change their whole scheme if Royal were to get hurt.  If the Bills are going to spend a third round pick on a tight end, I think they will be looking for an eventual replacement for Robert Royal as the starting tight end.

And lets hope its
NOT Brad Cottam. Rather than jump on a bandwagon for a good combine, I would rather hope that Carlson's lack of speed or Davis' drops would make them available to us in the third. Cottam is the typical Mamula situation....this kid has never done nada and now he is a top 3 TE...no way!

Cottam
It's not as if he emerged out of nowhere.  Scouts were ginving him a third round grade before the combine.  He had a great week at the senior bowl.

"Cottam proved to be the most consistent tight end during the week of practice and his combination of size and reliable hands could land him a spot as early as the third round."   -   Todd McShay

"Tennessee TE Brad Cottam started the week off on the right foot. He ran precise routes that allowed him to separate from man coverage and showed the ability to locate soft spots when he reads zone coverage. Just as importantly, Cottam caught the ball with his hands away from his frame and made several catches during the seven-on-seven periods. "  -  ESPN's senior bowl practice buzz

here is an excerpt from an ESPN chat.
Richard (Music City): Which TE impressed you most this week?

Kevin Weidl: It would have to be Brad Cottam from Tennessee. He has tremendous size, and has the ability to get off the line and stretch the defense. He also has very soft hands catching the ball away from his frame and anything off his frame. Overall, he had a great week.

I'm pretty
set on my evaluation on Cottam and an evaluation by Todd McShay (who is lame) is not going to change my mind!
