Losman Rumors

PFT reports the Chiefs and Dolphins are interested in Losman's services.  So this is the first I've heard about teams with explicit interest in our signal caller.  I still argue he is better on our team than off of it.  Unless somehow we can use the pick to move up or in a trade or get a 4th rounder for next year.  However, who the hell would be our backup?  Cleo Lemon???  If Losman can be content I say keep him for another year.  Otherwise you draft a QB.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Apparently Atlanta and San Fran may have some interest too.  From Draft Daddy:
We hear the Buffalo Bills are looking for a 4th pick in exchange for struggling, but still young quarterback J.P. Losman....Kansas City, Atlanta, San Francisco and Miami are all talking with them. However, we doubt he will bring any more than a 5th or 6th rounder....The Bills are close to $40 million under the cap, but many in Buffalo expect them to be quiet when free agency starts. Our source thinks that they will be looking at guys like Ben Troupe and Earnest Wilford and other lower tier free agents who wont eat up too much signing bonus money. They really need a Pro Bowl caliber linebacker like Lance Briggs, but they wont go to battle with San Francisco for him.

I'd like a 4th for him, but apparently that may not work out.  It's still very possible that we could get a 4th or even more, depending on the true interest of these teams and others.  Hopefully, they'll get into a bidding war for his services, which would be wonderful for our cause.  Too bad none of those teams have DT's that would be worth swapping JP for.  If only Detroit could get involved....

Losman trade
I think we need to hold our ground as long as possible until someone gives up a 3rd round pick. I think he is a great guy but when everyone in the locker room knows he is so unhappy, it cause cause a grey cloud in the room. We are better off getting what we can for him and bringing in a veteran, then having a negative vibe in the locker roon.

With Losmans experience (whether you deam it bad or good), his arm and young age... we can get a 3rd. The bad thing is that if the highest bidder is the Dolphins, then I would not do it. The last thing I want is Bill and JP to be buddy buddy and them playing us twice a year.

by hilliarddavid on Feb 25, 2008 1:44 PM EST reply actions

Yep
No need to be desperate here. The Bills don't have to trade Losman, and the fact that there are reportedly four teams interested only plays even more into Buffalo's hands. We're holding all the cards here - we can move Losman for a 3, or we can keep dangling him until someone is desperate enough to snag him. It's a win-win situation.

Very odd that the Dolphins are interested... guess John Beck wasn't such a great prospect after all, huh?

In all fairness...
...it wasn't Parcells' team that gave Beck such a glowing evaluation.

Didn't I get slaughtered
For even suggesting that Losman might fetch a 3rd?

Although it hasn't happened yet, the chances of getting some value for him are getting better and better by the day...

by krytime on Feb 25, 2008 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

That you did
To be honest, I don't think we'll get a third, and I think we'll struggle to get a fourth. My point was that we can hold out on a trade to try to fetch that price, given the amount of interest in him (which is flabbergasting to me) and the fact that we don't have to move him.

I'd be happy with a fourth,
And thrilled to death with a third.  I'd be a little wary of waiting for a better offer though.  If someone other than the Dolphins offers something decent, I'd jump on it right away.  I don't think he's the type of player to justify a bidding war.  I say strike while the irons hot...

by krytime on Feb 25, 2008 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

"We don't have to move him"
Brian is 100% right. The fact that we don't have to move him makes him more valuable. His talent might be a 5th or 6th round choice, but in the market he could be a 3rd or 4th rounder. It is all about supply and demand, and the demand is high and the supply is low. Football wise we have all thereason to hold on to JP, we don't even save a lot of money by getting rid of him (we wont even spend cash to cap this year... I bet). If we don't get a 3rd... I say keep him.

When I saw him play he was terrible,
He is definitly not the qb of the future.

value
But you guys think getting a draft pick is the way to go?  I mean, I definitely see the argument that getting a 4th or 5th or whatever we could get is better than nothing in a year when his contract is up anyhow.  But, who is going to back up Trent?  Either a late round pick or Cleo Lemon, Culpepper, or Craig Nall?  I like the idea of adding more arsenal for the bills to nab Shaun Rogers or another veteran, but adding more picks doesn't do us a lot of good unless we are planning on moving up in the draft once or twice.

draft pick
Maybe it is a pick in next years draft. Or if we get a pick in this years draft we trade picks from this year for picks in next years draft. Teams are always looking to move up or back so more picks the better. Struggling teams are always looking for quantity.

by hilliarddavid on Feb 25, 2008 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

I'll take a draft pick,
but would rather get a player back in any deal.

The thing about Losman is...
He doesn't want to be here, and it's that simple.  Sure it makes sense talent wise to keep him here as the backup.  But hilliarddavid is right on when he mentions the possiblity of a grey cloud hanging over the dressing room.

Losman wants to be in an organization that "wants" him, and is wiling to give him the chance to be a starter.  That's what it comes down to.

by krytime on Feb 25, 2008 3:11 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, but
He isn't going to be the starter anywhere likely, and he kept his mouth shut last year.  I realize if he is going to be a baby or a nuisance then he has to be traded.  But IF he can be a pro's pro and be the backup it is better suited.  If they can get a 4th for him I would take it in a heartbeat.  I don't think they can swindle that though.

I'd rather have next years pick than this years.  We would have too many picks, not enough roster spots and Practice squad spots for all of them.

MARVelous

by MARVelous on Feb 25, 2008 3:19 PM EST reply actions

Doesn't matter if he's going to be a starter.
It seems that four teams are interested in him, and would be willing to give him a chance.  That's all he wants.  He knows he won't get that chance here.

And I don't think you can ever have too many draft picks, especially in the top half of the draft.  Having extra picks gives you so much flexibility.

by krytime on Feb 25, 2008 3:25 PM EST reply actions

well to a point
but we already have 2 7ths and 2 5ths and a 6th.  So you add another 5th lets say and yeah its great but only if you know what you are doing with it.  It gets to the point where if you have that many late-round picks you almost feel obligated to trade up or trade for next years picks when it might not be in your best interest.

I wish we could package Losman and a pick for a player.  That would be more ideal

Adding draft picks
Losman was a Pros Pro for all his years here in Buffalo. Yes, he has had his chances and didn't prove much, but he has still been a professional. For him to have waited till after the season was the right thing to do and he was not critical of anyone, he just wants out.

Adding draft picks can only help. Yes we are not going to draft 11 players, but trading 3:1 or 2:1, and possibly giving up 2 or 3 draft picks for a guy like Rogers can only help.

For instance you can offer someone your 3rd round in '08 and your 4th round in '09 for someones late 2nd round. Trades like this often happen (hence the Willis deal in which we got an extra 3rd round pick in this years draft).

If we keep Losman he will be a professional and keep his mouth shut, but he wont be happy. Its like asking your girlfirend if something is wrong and she says no, when you know something is wrong. You end up feeling like crap and it affects you and the atmosphere around you.

Losman
I think that Losman's value to the Bills is worth more than a 4th rounder. Lets say the Bills trade J.P., who is going to be the back-up? The best free agent options are Billy Volek and Trent Green, or the Bills can always draft another QB. Other teams may only want to give up a 5th or 6th, but if thats all they are giving up I say keep him. It's 3rd rounder or bust in my opinion.
Man do I miss #78

wellI
If Randy Moss is a 4th rounder and Deion Branch was a 2nd rounder, I really don't see how Losman is any better than a 4th rounder at best.

Hilliarddavid.  I understand your basis that extra picks to future years can be exchanged and all that.  I'm just saying just because it can happen doesn't mean it will.  Ultimately if they trade him and acquire another pick, then they need to move up in the draft, trade for Rogers, or deal some picks for future picks.  All of which takes some savvy in order to get VALUE.

But I agree that Losman won't be happy here.  But we don't owe him anything, and we don't have to trade him.  He had every opportunity to succeed and may get another shot if he sticks around this year.  I'd still much rather have him on the team, even if he may be irritated on the inside.

JP has to stay
I don't know about you but Trent makes me nervous. He had sub-par numbers last year and I can't give him credit for all his wins or even the close losses (they almost won the Dallas game without any TD's from him and JP really won the Jets away game). I think they'd better keep JP as a security blanket and have an open competition in camp. Let's not forget that JP was rated 10th or 11th in QB ratings in 2006, he played all 16 games, he had a good TD to INT ratio, and he had a high completion percentage. The coaching staff totally hand-cuffed him in 2007 by trying to make him a pocket passer and it seemed like they wanted their "new boy" Trent in there anyways. I still think JP has a lot of talent...what a waste it would all be to only get a 3rd or 4th for him.

P.S- We need another Biscuit #97...any in the draft like him?

by CB Burger on Feb 26, 2008 1:10 AM EST reply actions

Disagree
"The coaching staff totally hand-cuffed him in 2007 by trying to make him a pocket passer"

Trent has way more poise in the pocket but I really doubt the coaches said "JP stay in the pocket even if you think it will result in a sack."  Face it, loseman isn't that great when it comes to poise and when it comes to "knowing" when to get rid of the ball.

And another thing, it wouldn't be a waste to get a 3rd or 4th rounder for him.  We initially wasted a first rounder on him when he wasn't even that good coming out of college.  He should have probably gone in the 3rd round anyway.

They didn't just spend a 1st on him.
They also gave Dallas their 2nd and 5th.  That's alot.

Trade or not
I agree with Marv, and I thought I posted that about three weeks ago, that if JP were to not disrupt the locker room, he would be more of a value to the Bills than they could get on a trade.  Didn't Hamdan dress for a few games?  Nonetheless, he was in the system for part of the season and with the offseason, he should be up to speed.  Furthermore, he was touted as "knowing Buffalo's system", and what about bringing back Holcomb (although he is employed, currently) or Nall (who is not employed, but how many times can we jerk him around), however, he still could be a valid option.  I say we keep JP, as long as he keeps his mouth shut.  Also, if he were a (glass half full as opposed to half empty guy) he would look at the opportunity to regain the starting job if Trent were to screw up or be injured, the diametric opposite of what happened to him last year.  It might be "his" best option to get back to being a starter.  Many, many things to consider on this point and it sure isn't simple.
