Midnight Transactions

I will be watching the web for all of the FA action tonight as I have to work till 6am EST today/tomorrow and my luck is holding that work is slow tonight! So, I will be putting up what I find as far as transactions are concerned around the league for FAs.

If and when stuff happens, I will update the post with what we know and my thoughts on what this means for the Bills as well.

As I will be also giving the Scouts Inc. ratings for players, here is how they break 'em donw: 90-100: Elite Player Player demonstrates rare abilities and can create mismatches that have an obvious impact on the game. ... Premier NFL player who has all the skills to consistently play at a championship level. ... Rates as one of the top players at his position in the league.

80-89: Outstanding Player Player has abilities to create mismatches versus most opponents in the NFL. ... A feature player who has an impact on the outcome of the game. ... Cannot be shut down by a single player and plays on a consistent level week in and week out.

70-79: Good Starter Solid starter who is close to being an outstanding player. ... Has few weaknesses and usually will win his individual matchup but does not dominate in every game, especially when matched up against the top players in the league.

60-69: Average Starter A valuable roster player but not a dominant player against the better players he faces on a weekly basis. ... Gives great effort and teams are glad to have him, but he may or may not go to the next level.

50-59: Good Backup This is a player who is really on the bubble and only starts because of a deficiency at the position. ... He lacks complete overall skills, and although he will battle, he will hinder his team's ability to play at a championship level if he is forced to be in the starting lineup consistently over a 16-game season. Teams don't mind having him on the roster but are always looking to upgrade.

40-49: Below Average Backup/Core Special Teamers Strictly a backup player who is not capable of starting. If forced to, he is only a short-term fix. ... He might make the roster because of special-teams contributions or experience. ... He is the type of player teams consistently look to replace with an upgrade. ... He always will be a borderline roster player.

30: Developmental Player Players with this grade have very little film to evaluate. Such players might flash potential in the preseason but don't have any regular-season performances to judge. they usually have very little experience but have to be tracked due to developmental potential.

20: Rookie (Post Draft) No professional tape to evaluate. These players will have an evaluation based on their college tape, but we will not put a new grade on them until after their rookie seasons. They will carry the 20 grade throughout their first NFL season.

10: Evaluation in Process Need more information

Flozell Resigned with the Cowboys
Not much news there since it was anticipated, but hey, its nice to know that he at least won't be beating up Schobel playing against us for Miami.

Drayton Florence
San Diego Union Tribune reports that Florence is will end up with either Washington or Detroit.

Rotoworld is not a fan of him and thinks he will be overpaid.

I like the guy but not if he's going to break the bank.

Vilma officially now a Saint
From PFT

SAINTS SNAG VILMA

Tom Rock of Newsday reports that the Jets have struck a deal with the Saints for linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

Vilma will go to New Orleans, apparently for a conditional pick in the 2009 draft.

The conditional nature of the selection suggests that there are lingering concerns about Vilma's knee.

Vilma Info
Scouts Inc, reports that Vilma is a 78 rating player, putting him just outside the Outstanding player area, but a solid Good Starter ranking. His report follows:

Vilma is a great combination of athleticism, instincts and power for having average size. He plays bigger than his listed size. He is inconsistent to be physical taking on blockers and can get walled off at times versus huge offensive lineman. He can be powerful versus the run coming down hill and making explosive tackles. Vilma runs very well and shows great range inside out to the ball. He has great foot agility, quickness and balance versus both the run and pass. Vilma can slip blockers in trash and can close on the ball with good burst in space. He is tough and plays with a high motor but is inconsistent to use his hands well to get separation from blockers. Vilma is very instinctive and reacts well as plays unfold. He will take some chances pursuing underneath blockers at times but has enough athleticism to get back in the play. Vilma is solid with his route recognition and understands leveraging receivers as a man coverage defender. Vilma has been one of the most productive players at his position over his three year career and should continue to have success in the future.

-- My take on this is Thank Heavens Mangini is a dumbass. While Vilma didn't fit their 3-4 perfectly, he was the only LB they had who truly scared me on any given day. Now, heres the kicker, who wants to bet they either make a run at Briggs or draft Rivers of USC?

Berrian to visit Vikes today
From PFT as well

BERRIAN TO VISIT VIKES

Barely a half hour into free agency, and the Vikins have set up a Friday visit with Bears receiver Bernard Berrian.

Berrian wants a contract that pays out $24.5 million over the first three years, and that includes $12 million guaranteed.

He would provide a deep threat for the Vikings' West Coast offense.  Have a guy who can stretch the field opens up the various underneath routes in the system.

per PFT

SMITH TO VISIT VIKES

As owner Zygi Wilf's plane heads to California to fetch receiver Bernard Berrian, the Vikes also have made arrangements for a Friday visit from Bengals defensive end Justin Smith.

Smith played for Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier when Frazier worked in that same role with the Bengals.

The Vikings have a need for help at defensive end because Kenechi Udeze recently was diagnosed with leukemia.  Smith was Cincinnati's franchise player in 2007.

Justin Smiley to Dolphins
SMILEY SIGNS WITH FINS

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a signing.

In roughly a half hour of negotiations that started from scratch (eye roll), the Dolphins have signed 49ers guard Justin Smiley to a five-year, $25 million contract with a $9 million signing bonus.

The story announcing the move was posted 27 minutes into free agency by Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.  And given that the article has three paragraphs of quotes from Smiley, and assuming that the conversation between Maiocco and Smiley lasted at least five minutes, there's no way in hell that the Dolphins first initiated contact with Smiley at 12:01 a.m. EST.

Then again, anyone who thinks that Fins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells gives a crap about any of that would be sorely mistaken.

-- Needless to say this is a good contract, Smiley isn't anything truly special, but he is decent, and the contract is livable. He is rated a 74 by Scouts Inc., he is also only 26 yrs old they say:
Smiley is a five-year veteran who was drafted by the 49ers in the second round of the 2004 draft and has been a starter for pretty much all of his previous four years. He is a wide body who has above-average foot quickness and agility. He is pretty much a short-area player who is quick off the ball, quick to get into his blocks and has good change of direction and body control in a limited area. He can struggle when out on an island or in space but, for the most part, he does a good job of playing within his limitations. He is a good technician who gets a good fit and understands angles when getting out to the second level or when pulling around the corner. He plays with leverage and keeps his feet under his pads, but does not have a lot of pop or power as a drive blocker. He lacks the bulk and raw power to create new run lanes or to root bigger defensive tackles off the line of scrimmage. He can be walked back into the pocket by a good bull rush and struggles when trying to sink his hips to draw the line. He started the first eight games of the 2007 season before leaving the Atlanta game with a dislocated shoulder and missed the rest of the season. He is a quality, functional starter but not the type who will jump off the screen at you or excite you when you watch him play.

Samuel visting Eagles

SAMUEL VISITING EAGLES

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel will visit the Eagles on Friday.

On Thursday night, it was reported that Samuel already has a deal in place with the Eagles.

Samuel is looking for at least $10 million per year.

-- Not sure why the Eagles are getting into that derby, he doesn't fit Jim Johnsons style of ball on the defensive side at all. They would be making a mistake to pay that guy that much a year.

Moss staying put????
Per PFT

MOSS STAYING PUT?

Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/16093897.html?page=2&c=y) reports that receiver Randy Moss is "signed, sealed, and delivered" to remain in New England.

There has been no official word from the team of any deal.

On Thursday, the Panthers emerged as an unlikely potential candidate for his services.

-- NO surprise here if this comes out to be true, he would be stupid to leave that team as Brady loves tossing the long ball to him, and honestly, outside of the Colts or the Giants they are a lock for the postseason and a Superbowl run.

Faine to go to Tampa Bay Bucs
Per PFT

FAINE TO TAMPA

That $44 million in cap space has burned a hole in the pockets of the Buccaneers.

Stephen Holder of the St. Petersburg Times (http://blogs.tampabay.com/bucs/) reports that the Bucs have reached an agreement with free-agent center Jeff Faine, previously of the Saints.

Per Holder, the deal makes Faine the highest-paid center in the game.

-- Faine is rated as a 69 by Scouts, and is listed as only just shy of a good starter. This won't help or hurt the Bills in anyway as none of the AFC East teams have a need at Center, even though Fowler isn't great, hes about as good as Faine. Experts take:
Faine is tough, athletic and savvy. He's a right-handed center who can handle the shotgun snap. He's a veteran who has emerged as the leader of New Orleans' offensive line. He has some functional strength and knows how to use leverage. He has good initial quickness off the snap and into blocking patterns. He knows and understands good blocking angles. He can be effective working to the second level off combination blocks. He shows good awareness and instincts setting pocket depth in pass protection. He can slide, bend and move laterally off short sets. He has active hands and can reset on moving targets. He has good recovery speed against inside rushers and when reacting to line stunts. He stays under control and can be effective in space on screen passes. But he lacks ideal size and power. He isn't as effective when covered up by a nose tackle. He struggles to maintain leverage when he gets upright on drive blocks. He can get top-heavy, overextend and lose his balance. He tends to give up ground against power rushers. Faine is a steady NFL starter who is a stabilizing influence.

Porter looking at Jags
Per PFT

PORTER TO VISIT JAGS

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com (http://community.foxsports.com/blogs/Alex_Marvez/2008/02/28/Source_Porter_Samuel_set_for_visits)reports that free-agent receiver Jerry Porter will visit the Jaguars on Friday.

Porter would be the second new receiver added by Jacksonville.  A trade soon will be official (if it isn't already) to send Vikings receiver Troy Williamson to the Jags.

-- Not a big deal as Joey has shown himself as not being that good a player and Troy could be a boom or bust trade. These might work out, or not, and if the Bills can compete for a Wild Card spot these moves may end up helping us to beat the Jags out later this year.

Anderson now on the Market
Per SI.com
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/nfl/02/28/anderson.ap/index.html

The Cleveland Browns are poised to launch Plan B at quarterback.

B, for Brady, that is.

The club was unable to sign starter Derek Anderson to a three-year, $20 million contract -- $10 million guaranteed -- before Friday's 12:01 a.m. free agency deadline and are prepared to turn their high-powered offense over to Brady Quinn, a first-round pick from last year and fan favorite.

On Thursday, Browns general manager Phil Savage protected the club by tendering Anderson a one-year contract offer for $2.5 million in 2008. Anderson did not accept the deal, making him a restricted free agent and on the market.

Teams can now negotiate with the 24-year-old Anderson, who went from backup to Pro Bowler in 2007. If Anderson accepts an offer, Savage said it would "make it extremely difficult" for the Browns to match it. The club would have seven says to do so.

Because of the high tender, if the Browns decide to let Anderson go, they'll receive first- and third-round picks as compensation in April's NFL draft.

Before the deadline, Savage said Anderson and his agents must have felt there was interest in him to risk turning down the Browns' offer.

"If he's willing to take the walk out there, there's got to be some indication there's something at the end of the rainbow," said Savage, who reiterated his preference would be to keep Anderson and Quinn. "If Derek wants to be a Brown and really wants to stay here in Cleveland and play with the players that are on our team, then he can do that rather easily.

"We can look in the mirror and know we put a strong offer out there. We're in a good situation either way."

The Browns don't have a first-round pick in 2008 because they traded it to select Quinn, the former Notre Dame star who sat behind Anderson all season. Quinn didn't play until the season finale, but showed nice touch and poise when he was in.

Savage is confident Quinn is ready to be a No. 1 starter.

"There's a comfort level that Brady can walk in, administrate the offense and do even more than that," Savage said. "He does have some mobility, is physically strong and has a good arm. The mental part is going to end up being his greatest strength."

Before the deadline, Savage said if Anderson declines the club's multiyear offer and opts to test the free-agent market, it's unlikely he'll be back.

The Browns can continue negotiating a long-term deal with Anderson during free agency. If Anderson leaves, the Browns would be in the market for an experienced backup, Savage said.

Messages seeking comment from Anderson's agent, Mark Humenik, were not returned.

Aside from Anderson, the Browns, who went 10-6 last season and narrowly missed the playoffs, have other pressing needs in free agency. Savage said the club will try to bolster its defensive line and linebacking corps.

According to several reports, the Browns were working on a trade with Green Bay for defensive tackle Corey Williams. Williams, who tied a career-high with seven sacks last season, was designated as the Packers' franchise player last week.

Savage hopes to have free agents visit Cleveland in the next few days, but he didn't anticipate any quick signings. Last year, the Browns signed free agent guard Eric Steinbach on Day 1 of free agency.

-- Now we'll see who is willing to give up a 1st and 3rd for him. I think the Browns have had this planned all along since they don't have a 1st round pick and what better way to do so then capitalize on a player who other teams are high on, and cost you nothing to get? I guess we'll find out how good Brady is now.

Harris to Raiders
Per PFT

HARRIS TO THE RAIDERS

A league source tells us that the Oakland Raiders have reached an agreement with former 49ers tackle Kwame Harris.

Harris was a first-round pick in 2003.

No financial details are presently available.

-- Harris is a 61 rated player, and only 25 years old. Guy has been somewhat of a bust, and I'm not surprised he is going to the Raiders in an attempt to ressurect his career. How does this affect us? Not at all other than to take another player out of the backup market, which is what I think this guy will be, the Experts say:
Harris is a six-year veteran out of Stanford who is teetering on the verge of being labeled as a bust as a first-round draft pick by the 49ers in the 2003 draft. He has excellent dimensions for the position and was their starter for the 2005 and 2006 season at right tackle. He is a very intelligent lineman who has massive size to go along with a huge wingspan, which allows him to control opponents and steer them on by the pocket. He is a smooth, fluid, easy mover who can get wide in his pass set and slide out to pick up the edge rusher. He is not a natural knee bender and tends to allow his pad level to get too high a lot of the time, which makes it easy for him to get out of control when trying to adjust to counter moves or change of direction moves in space. He lacks a mean temperament and tends to allow his opponents to get back into the play more than he should. He does not finish blocks off like youd want him to and at times it simply appears he does not take his craft seriously. He spends more time on the ground than he should and does not recover and right himself easily. He can mirror and occupy opponents, but does not get a lot of leg drive on run blocks and struggles to create run lanes. He has underachieved in his career, at this point and a change of scenery may be a good thing for him.

Two signings and a visit
Per PFT

YOUNG, SIMONEAU STAY WITH SAINTS

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that the Saints have reached agreements with two of their own free agents.

Defensive tackle Brian Young will sign a three-year, $12 million deal.

Also, linebacker Mark Simoneau will stay put.

-- Neither of these guys were on the Bills radar so they're signing back up with the Saints doesn't affect us.

WILLIAMS LINES UP VISITS

Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports that Falcons free-agent linebacker Demorrio Williams has already lined up visits with the Chiefs, Bucs, and Bears.

Williams plays on the weak side.  In Chicago, he could be the replacement for Lance Briggs.

-- This guy could give us some trouble as he isn't a bad player, 65 by Scouts Inc. and may have been a good depth signing. He may end up with a team we may need to fight to get a spot, Experts take:
Williams is athletic and fast. He's versatile enough to start, play in some sub packages and contribute as a core special teams player. He has sideline-to-sideline range and functional play strength against the run. He uses his hands pretty well and can separate from blocks to move through trash. He's an effective tackler in space when he plays under control. He is quick and fluid in his zone drops. He has the speed to carry the seam and the reactive ability to stay in position in man-to-man coverage. He has the quickness to break on balls in short zones, and has decent awareness and ball skills. But he isn't a power player and he tends to rely too much on his athleticism. He isn't a natural take-on player and must be well protected within the scheme. He isn't very explosive with his hands and too often gets stuck on blocks. He isn't very natural when reacting to blocking patterns and doesn't read his keys well. Williams still has upside, and he could develop into a quality starter if he can address his shortcomings.

Niners making some waves
Per PFT

NINERS START SPENDING

Though none are all that high in profile, the 49ers have already made a few moves in free agency.

The Niners reportedly have agreed to terms with Lions quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, running back DeShaun Foster, and Vikings linebacker Dontarrius Thomas.  Foster recently had been released by the Panthers.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rose Press-Democrat (http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/default.asp?item=1036049&mode) also reports that the Niners will host defensive end Justin Smith on Friday.  Smith is scheduled to visit the Vikings, too.

Finally, receiver Isaac Bruce could be heading to San Fran, where he'd be reunited with former Rams coach Mike Martz, who's now the offensive coordinator of the Niners.

-- What does this mean for us? JT was the Lions backup whom they liked, which means that JPs value to them acutally increases in our favor. Foster and Thomas never even touched the boards here or at OBD in my opinion as RB is solid and Thomas doesn't fill any of our needs. They are rated as Follows:

Sullivan: Scouts has NOTHING on this dude, which shows how little the powers that be thought of him.

Foster:68 rating
Foster is explosive, fast and powerful. He is competitive and always battles for extra yards after contact. He has the speed to turn the corner and go the distance. He attacks the line and has the acceleration to press the hole. He has outstanding vision and burst, and can be productive on cutback runs. He is a natural pick-and-slide runner, has very good lateral quickness and doesn't need to throttle down before making a move. He will lower his shoulder and deliver punishment on the second level when finishing runs. He runs with good leg drive, balance and toughness, and is difficult to bring down with one defender. He has good hands and is dangerous after the catch. He is a stout and steady pass blocker who can take on power and speed rushers. But Foster is prone to injuries and some costly mistakes. He must prove his durability to realize his potential as an NFL feature back. He can be impatient when running downhill. He has ball-security issues in space and between the tackles.

Thomas: 59 rating
A highly regarded prospect coming out of college, Thomas hasn't lived up to his draft status. He has an excellent combination of size, strength and athleticism. He bends and uses his hands well to shed effectively. He plays with good pop, both as a tackler and when taking on blockers. He is aggressive and runs well in space. His range in coverage, to the perimeter in run support and on special teams is excellent. He can be effective in limited packages and on special teams, but his production has been in steady decline since his rookie season. He is a step slow to react and seems to lack natural instincts and a strong understanding of the game. He doesn't always take proper angles to the ball, which has slowed his progress as a middle linebacker. Vikings coordinator Leslie Frazier's base 4-3 scheme hasn't been a good fit for Thomas, but his raw talent remains apparent. The Vikings like Thomas and probably will work to bring him back, but he may be better off in a slightly different scheme.

Sullivan info
Just looking in the wrong place, whoops.

Rating 59
Expert's take:
O'Sullivan has marginal size for the position. You would like to have a little more height so that throwing windows would be there without a lot of movement in the pocket. He is a good athlete with good strength and he shows that he has good foot quickness. He has the ability to move in the pocket to buy time until receivers come open. He gets set up in the pocket quickly and he gets the ball out however he has a bit of a windup in his throwing motion and he needs to become more consistent in his delivery of the ball. He has decent arm strength and he gets good velocity on his short to intermediate passes however he tends to think he can get the ball into spaces where he shouldn't. He has decent accuracy with his short to intermediate passes but he needs to develop more patience in the pocket and do a better job with his pre snap reads and his overall decision making. He is still very raw in terms of playing experience and he needs more playing time in order to develop but he has some very good physical tools to work with and he has a chance to develop into a very solid back up in the league.

PFT pulls back on signing info
REPORT OF NINERS SIGNINGS PREMATURE

A league source tells us that the report from the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat that the Niners have signed quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, linebacker Dontarrius Thomas, and running back DeShaun Foster are premature.

Per the source, contact has been made by the 49ers with each player, but no deal has been done.  Yet.

-- I agree with PFT on this one, where there is smoke, there is fire, usually big piles of San Frans cash in fact being burned on dudes.

Signings now official
Per John Clayton at ESPN.com

The 49ers wasted no time hitting their free-agency shopping list. They agreed with Vikings linebacker Dontarrious Thomas to a two-year deal and allowed Lions quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan to be re-united with new 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz by agreeing to a one-year, $645,000 contract. The 49ers also locked up a two-year, $1.8 million deal with former Panthers halfback DeShaun Foster and a one-year, $870,000 deal with kick-returner/cornerback Allen Rossum.

Miami looking for some TOUGH guys
Per PFT

KIRCUS LANDS IN MIAMI

When Dolphins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells said that he doesn't want "thugs and hoodlums," maybe someone should have asked him to define those terms.

Parcells has signed former Broncos receiver David Kircus, who a year ago (allegedly) beat the crap out of a guy who asked Kircus to leave a party.

Kircus thereafter passed a polygraph test in Denver, but the questions posed to Kircus presumably focused on whether he acted in self-defense.  There was no apparent dispute as to whether the end result was Kircus beating the crap out of a guy (http://blog.mlive.com/highlightreel/2007/05/kircus_arrested_for_breaking_m.html).

So if that's not the action of a "thug" or a "hoodlum," we'd love to know what is, primarily because I'm currently trying to instruct Florio Jr. on how not to be a "thug" or a "hoodlum," and I could use some help establishing the boundaries for him.

-- I hate to say it, but I am now officially afraid that this dude will kick the crap out of our starting CBs, literally. I don't think hes a great football player, but obviously the dude kicks ass in a literal sense. All I envision is Greer going up to press cover this dude, and getting drop kicked in the head, then stomped flat for his temerity in trying to man up on this dude. Anyway, the Scouts gives him a 56, and ummmm, backs up the Thug thing (dudes WHITE as well, damn!)

Kircus signed with the Broncos prior to the 2006 season after sitting out 2005 and being cut by the Lions. He is a tall, lean receiver who plays with intensity and abandon, and he has more straight-line speed than quick, nimble route-running ability. He has the size and body control to screen defenders from the ball and has reliable hands to reach out and pluck the ball away from his body. He does not show a lot of elusiveness with the ball after the catch but will fight for as many yards he can get. He is still learning how to read zones and will drift into coverage at times. He is more than willing as a blocker but lacks the strength and bulk to be very effective as an open field blocker. Kircus will screen opponent and work to maintain position but struggles to sustain his blocks for any length of time.

So how done was Pat Williams when we let him go Tommie boy??? Stick a fork in him level right?

Don't worry...
Kirkus sucks, trust me he couldn't really beat up anyone in NFL in a fight or more importantly on the field. I'm glad Miami signed him so now I;m not terrified that we will.

Losman's value continues to CLIMB
Per PFT

'SKINS KEEP COLLINS

A league source tells us that the Redskins have reached an agreement to retain the services of quarterback Todd Collins.

Collins, 36, helped lead the 'Skins to the playoffs after starter Jason Campbell went down with a knee injury.

The Rams were believed to be interested in Collins, given that former Redskins' assistant Al Saunders, who brought Collins to D.C., is now the offensive coordinator in St. Louis.

Collins will presumably stay in the No. 2 spot behind Campbell, but Collins provides a quality insurance policy in the event of further injury to the 2005 first-rounder.

-- Well well well, this means JP's value continues to climb for us now that Collins is off the market, and that leaves such QB luminaries as Cleo Lemon as competition for us in getting JP traded if thats the plan. I would look for something JP related to happen either now in the next couple of days or draft day, otherwise were keeping him till end of season. Scouts reports that Todd is a 59 rated dude and say:

Collins is a seasoned veteran who has pretty much been a reserve for all 13 of his previous seasons. He filled in, admirably, for an injured Jason Campbell in 2007 for the final four games as well as the postseason. In the final four games he had a quarterback rating of 106.4 and did a great job of finding the open receiver and putting the ball in a place the receiver could catch it. He showed poise in the pocket and did not take unnecessary sacks. While he does not have a cannon for an arm, the ball jumps off his arm with a little zip. He is not much of a scrambler and pretty much needs to stay in the pocket. He can read coverages, was decisive and quick going through his progressions and gave his team a chance to win games. He no longer possesses starter skills, but proved he can do a good job of stepping in when needed.

I would tell you, but....
Then I would have to take a hit out on you in order to keep others from trying to take my job.

Lets just say some large evil multi-national corporation pays me to sit on my ass in my apartment and make sure nothing breaks down in their clients IT environments ALL night long. Needless to say they overpay me, give me way to many good benefits, and after working several jobs that were not exactly the best in the world earlier in my life I will give this position up when I am cold and dead.

Pats resign Washington
Per ESPN.com

The New England Patriots entered the first minutes of free agency with four potential free agents at wide receiver, but reached a deal to keep one of them.

Kelley Washington, who had an option the Patriots weren't going to pay, reached an agreement to stay with the Patriots. Terms of the deal -- including the length of the contract -- were not available.

While Washington is returning, the Patriots still have yet to offer deals to unrestricted free agent receivers Randy Moss and Jabar Gaffney. The Patriots also didn't put up an option in Donte' Stallworth's contract that allows him to reach free agency.

-- Rating of 54, dude isn't much use to anyone outside of ST and they will most likely retain Moss, so all he gets them is depth, and we weren't going to waste time and money on this dude, also, he is no threat to us. Experts take:

Washington has been buried behind an elite group of wide receivers in Cincinnati, but also has done little to distinguish himself as a weapon who can be trusted to produce week after week. Washington caught just nine passes in 2006, but he missed much of the season with a hamstring injury that eventually landed him on injured reserve. He has a great frame, with long arms and big hands. He has a defined and strong body. He is an excellent sized target and can outmuscle defenders for the ball. For such a big receiver, Washington has very good deep speed, is fluid with impressive quickness and overall athletic ability. He gets off the ground very well and can grab the ball at its highest point over most defensive backs. He has the skill set to be a fine red zone weapon. While he looks the part and has the pure talent to be a fine contributor, Washington simply has never lived up to that ability. His instincts for the game are marginal. He is wildly inconsistent and cannot be counted on. His routes can be very sloppy and he drops too many catchable balls. He has durability concerns, doesn't play with pain and isn't real tough or competitive. He turns down blocks and can be a selfish player. He is a talented underachiever who is too inconsistent and cannot be relied upon. If Washington wakes up and asserts himself he could be a fine receiver, but counting on him to do so is not a wise gamble.

Jenkins to become a Jet?
This deal is still in the works it looks like but ESPN.com reports the following:

Nearly a year after starting the process, the Carolina Panthers are about to unload disgruntled defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. The Panthers and New York Jets have been in heavy trade discussions about the three-time Pro Bowler and a deal could be completed Friday, according to multiple sources. The Panthers tried to trade Jenkins before last year's draft but pulled back when they couldn't get a first-round pick in return.

It's likely they'll willl settle for less (probably a third-round choice) this time to get rid of Jenkins, who, in July, said he didn't like living in Charlotte. He also didn't endear himself to the coaching staff by skipping last year's voluntary workouts to spend time with family in the Washington, D.C. area.

Jenkins may not be returning to the Panthers, but the team came to terms with fullback Brad Hoover on a three-year deal. Agent Tim Irwin declined to give financial details. Hoover, 31, has spent the past eight seasons with the Panthers after earning a spot on the roster as an undrafted rookie out of Western Carolina. Hoover played in all 16 games last season and started 12, used mostly as a blocker.

The Jets are looking for a bigger defensive tackle to man the middle and it became clear after last season that Dewayne Robertson wasn't who the team wanted in that role. Jenkins, 28, is listed at 6-4 and 335 pounds, but his weight became an issue after he missed much of the 2004 and 2005 seasons with knee and shoulder injuries. He admitted to getting close to 400 pounds while he was sitting out but got his weight under control and played well enough to make the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season. The Panthers are scheduled to pay Jenkins a $1 million roster bonus next week.

-- Pat Yasinskas, ESPN.com and The Associated Press

-- What does this mean for us? Hoover resigning is no surprise but he would have been a good short term stop gap FB. Nothing good to be honest will come of this Jenkins deal as it stands. Jenkins is a fine DT and he is a vastly superior upgrade over Dewayne Robertson whom the Jets are jettisoning if they can't move him and his massive contract. I do not like the idea of this at all. Scouts rate him as a 80 caliber player, meaning an outstanding starter, and report the following:

Jenkins is huge and very athletic for his size. He has good initial quickness, leverage and strength. He is extremely tough and physical. He has an outstanding motor given how often he faces extra blocking attention. He is very quick off the ball and effectively penetrates gaps. He controls the line of scrimmage and will fight to defeat double teams. He keeps his pads low and square, and he excels at redirecting down the line to make plays against the run. He has good pass-rush instincts for an interior lineman. He gets onto a lineman's edge quickly and has violent, effective moves to get by his man. He has a power rush to collapse the inside pocket against smaller interior linemen. But Jenkins doesn't work hard enough to stay in shape. He has missed a lot of playing time in recent years and has become an injury risk. His stamina likely will become an issue if he doesn't keep his weight under control.

Clayton thinks some people are moving
Per John Clayton at ESPN.com

Plenty of trades are expected to be announced Friday. The Packers traded franchise defensive tackle Corey Williams to the Browns for a second-round choice. Williams is expected to sign a six-year, $38 million contract.
-- This is still unconfirmed as of yet by any other sources I can find. If so, this means Derek Anderson is going to be picked up by someone as Savage has come right out and said that if anyone beats the current offer they gave Derek, they can have him for the asking price of this years 1st and 3rd pick. I can't see the Browns going without a 1st day pick at all.

The Saints are close to finishing a trade for Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma.
-- Done deal at this point, see above.

Panthers defensive tackle Kris Jenkins is heading to the Jets for a third-and fifth-round pick.
-- Still not done as of yet from all reports, he may be jumping the gun a bit.

Vikings wide receiver Troy Williamson will go to the Jaguars for a sixth-round pick.
-- Been done for a while, thanks John.

Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers and Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud are also on the trading block and deals could move quickly involving them.
-- Damn it Bills, get your asses in gear here!!!!!

Its 6am and all is still quiet
Well, its 6am EDT, and its the end of my day. A quick recap of what (didn't) happen over night for all you Bills fans.
  • The Bills made NO moves over the evening on anyone. This is perhaps not a bad strategy this year as it seems to be what the vast majority of teams are doing this year, let the market sort itself out over the first 12-48 hours and then make a move. I think this is partly due to the relatively weak FA market and to teams being more careful about builing up and keeping talent in house.
  • The only BIG news to report is that Vilma looks to be a Saint, Jenkins may go to the Jets, Corey Williams (is, maybe, will be, who knows?) is going to the Browns, and that the Browns are ready and willing to wait for some team to tender Derek Anderson to get back into the first day as they will not give him up for less than a 1st and 3rd as their tender requires.
-- Otherwise alot of small signings, and nothing earth shattering money wise. The biggest deal went to Justin Smiley (I am NOT including the Tommy Kelley signing as the vast majority of the NFL people are panning the contract, and come on here, Crazy Al Davis is involved, he doesn't count unless your looking for Alien life-forms.) Justin bagged a five-year, $25 million contract with a $9 million signing bonus from the Dolphins. Smiley is an OK lineman in my book, but Sparano may get something more out of him as he is a good line coach, now HC. The best deal as far as the Bills are concerned is that Todd Collins is staying in D.C.

What does this all mean for the Bills? Well, since Todd is staying put, and the Sage talks have broken down, and ummmm, the rest of the QB FA market is deader than 10 week old fish, JPs trade value is probably at its best now. The only guy who will hurt us is Derek Anderson, and I don't think many teams look at the two guys the same, though both can sling the long ball. I think JP moves on in the next 24-28 hours, either for additional picks, or as a package to get either Stroud or Rogers. Rogers being the most likely as the #2 QB for the Lions just signed with the 49ers.

Awesome job WA
I appreciate these updates.  I didn't have to go trolling around looking for all of them since you've put them here for us.

I agree with you on Losman. I think he could be gone by the end of the weekend.  A Losman and maybe a later round pick for Rogers would be great, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Vilma to the Saints also increases the liklihood of Keith Rivers being available at #11 for all of you who are on that bandwagon.
