Bills Release Tripplett; Precursor to DT Trade?

Tripplett spent two years on Buffalo's roster (BuffaloBills.com)

Two years ago, rookie Buffalo Bills GM Marv Levy made his first big free agent splash by signing Colts DT Larry Tripplett to a five-year contract. Now, with Levy out of the building and the Bills looking to upgrade their interior defensive line, Tripplett has been released.

Signed due to his experience in Buffalo's Cover-2 defense, Tripplett never developed into the playmaker that the Bills hoped he could be when he was signed in March of 2006. In two seasons as a Bill, Tripplett notched just 68 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and was at the crux of one of the worst run defenses in the entire NFL over the past two seasons. Despite those downfalls, Tripplett was a steady veteran presence and a leader, and his departure leaves two third-year players - John McCargo and Kyle Williams - as the only two Bills tackles that have received significant playing time.

Precursor to Stroud Deal?
Earlier today, reports surfaced that Jaguars DT Marcus Stroud - given permission to seek a trade - would be visiting Orchard Park today. With two defensive tackles being traded today (the Jets acquired Kris Jenkins, while the Bengals acquired Shaun Rogers), both for third and fifth round picks, it is reasonable to assume that the Bills are poised to make a trade of their own. Clearly, this is just speculation, but if you're releasing your most experienced interior defender, you'd better have something up your sleeve.

Stroud and the Jets' Dewayne Robertson are the last two "big name" defensive tackles available on the trade market. And with head coach Dick Jauron indicating that the team isn't done wheeling and dealing today, the simple math seems to add up.

More on LB Kawika Mitchell Signing
Coach Jauron spoke to the media regarding the newest Buffalo Bill, LB Kawika Mitchell, and had this to say about his plans for next year's starting linebackers:

"The weak side spot in our system will get a lot more leads on that side," said Jauron who plans to leave Angelo Crowell on the same side he played last season. "We were looking for a more physical linebacker in that spot and we believe we've found him."

You certainly have. Weighing in at 253 pounds, Mitchell will bring a very physical, aggressive presence to the spot manned last season by the finesse, passive Keith Ellison (who is expected to remain a top backup). This move is a clear attempt to bring more toughness to the front seven, and since Mitchell has enough experience dropping back into coverage, it's not a complete drop-off from the pass defense standpoint either. Ellison is also still expected to see time on nickel downs, according to Rotoworld.

Keep your computers locked in to Buffalo Rumblings, as we plan to continue our coverage of Buffalo's early off-season moves as thoroughly and promptly as we can.

triplett
Like I said earlier today, I would not be surprised if Triplett was cut.  And it happened.  So, I think it is just a reality of the Bills organization trying to improve the OVERALL talent of this roster.  We were definitely one of the least overall talented rosters in the league last year.  Thats why you always heard the pats on the back from Peter King and other NFL wonks, for what DJ did with the talent level.

I really hope we can pull of Stroud.  That along with Mitchell adds toughness and nastiness to our defense.

Now, I'm starting to think we need to deal Losman if we can, and grab that pick to help our when deal 1 or two picks for Stroud.

WILFORDS TERMS
4 years $13 million, 6 million guaranteed.  They must not have thought he was the answer cuz that is an affordable price.  OR maybe, Wilford would rather stay in SUNNY FLORIDA.

Either way, we need to get a WR.  Not sure who that is.

Johnson
In an attempt to fill other needs this offseason, the Bills have expressed interest in former Tennessee tight end Ben Troupe, who is scheduled to visit with the team this weekend. The Bills have also had preliminary talks with former Arizona receiver Bryant Johnson, said agent Joel Segal, who represents both Johnson and Troupe.

No taxes down there.
Still, I'll have yet another helping of crow.  I thought for sure he'd be overpaid, ala Porter.  But that wasn't the case.  Might he have an agent who is just a piece of junk?

Reached out?
So they are just trying to bring him in for a visit?

6'3" 216 lbs he has all the tools, but from what I've read and seen he just isn't a big play guy.  I think I'd rather have hackett over him if I had to choose

I like Johnson
I actually like Johnson a great deal (I watched a number of Cardinals games) -- he seemed to be almost in the same league as Bolden and Fitzerald, frankly.  I think he is a ton better then Wilford -- but I think he would command a mega contract (unlike Wilford).  If we get Stroud, Mitchell and Johnson, we really hit all our soft spots with top notch upgrades.

johnson
Johnson would command more than wilford.  Probably 10-12 million guaranteed.  I think Johnson or Berrian are guys that need to be targeted.  GET WHEELING AND DEALING!

I like Johnson also
Get him and Stroud, and I think that Buffalo will be in a good position going into the draft.  That would be a great position to be in.  To draft for depth and they could aquire everyone else there.  DT, CB, WR, TE etc. not necessarily in that order.  That would be great.  I hope there working on Stroud and Johnson eagerly.

Wow. Just got home. Away from sports all day.
A lot of you guys posted some really good comments, going back to the efforts of the "nighttime" guys.  Enjoyable reads by all.  Now for my take, in no particluar order...

Surprised there wasn't more chatter on the Mitchell signing.  I don't think he's a game changer by any means, but he seems to be physical.  I really don't now much about him.  No one here, at least to my knowledge, championed his cause.  I just hope he can run.  If anything, this probably rules out a Rivers/Connor draft pick.  I still can't help but wonder - how does a SB winner whose defense beat Tom Brady, in his prime years, get only 3 million plus a year?

As to this DT stuff.  Wow; lot's of talk here.  I thought I was the only one passionate about getting a DT.  I was wrong.  Really surprised they just let Tripplett go.  If anything, I can't believe they didn't try and trade him for something.  I thought the guy would serve well as a backup to McCargo in that 3 spot, or whatever the hell they call it.  I never thought they would just let him go.

Stroud.  Whenever I thought of Jax's defense, I always thought of Stroud and Henderson, and the word "nasty."  At 306 lbs, I think he plays "bigger."  As he's the only real DT available now with any worth, and he's in town, and Tripplett is gone, I'd have to assume, like many of you, that it's a close to being a done deal.  If he's healthy, I'd like him - a lot.  I agree with something Kurupt said too; something along the lines of DTs being good in to their thirties, even will all of that extra weight.  Great point.  And as far as the thirties go, I completely agree with sireric's sentiments that being 30 ain't so bad.  Anyway, as long as he's healthy, I wouldn't have a problem with a 3rd and a 5th for him.  Those are extra picks, one from ...

Labill & Co.  Loved that comment.  McGahee was a d***.  But in reality, he gave us two decent seasons, a possible really good QB, and maybe an almost stud DT.  Better yet was the Peerless Price reference to getting McGahee.  Reminds me a little of how the Mogilny trade played out...

No Wilford, huh?  A few of you guys were really high on him.  At times, I thought a few of you might have been his agent in disguise.  Where are Jonhson and Hackett today?  No word on them?  Are they red headed or something?  And how does Joey Porter get 30 million?  That really didn't surprise me.  I've said 2nd tier WRs would get that much.

I got no beef with Troupe coming in here.

So for now, if free agency and a trade gets the Bills a starting DT, a starting LB, and a new TE, I'll be happy with it.  I'd still like to get a WR, just so they're not "forced" to pick one high in the draft.

Again, nice work Bills fans.  And as always Brian - great web site.

I have a question.
Really, how did they just let Triplett go?  Was he due to receive a roster bonus soon?   Now, I don't have a Triplett jersey, I swear.  I think he was just above average; maybe a perfect backup at best.

But what I don't get, is if they don't get Stroud, what are they going to do?  That would really imply taking their chances in the draft, and that's not smart.

Why couldn't they have traded Triplett, or at least keep around to see how the draft plays out?  I'm confused here..

In regards
To the Tripplet release, I read that we saved 6 million to the cap by making the move...if this is true it was a very very wise move.

Maybe there finishing
the deal with Jax and had to show some good faith for a "09" conditional.  I don't know how the contracts are in the NFL to that detail.  I hope they are close and we will hear something soon.  I still believe the release of Triplett has something to do with signing Stroud.

by btk0930 on Feb 29, 2008 7:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you
This is what the Bills Daily says about Triplett's contract:  DT Larry Tripplett $3.8M Cap figure for 2008 - Release frees up $2.7M in real dollars and saves $1.1 Million on cap.  So, I am kind of on the fence -- since Triplett is a solid player.  I do like the sound of Stroud and McCargo, with Schoebel and Kelsey on the Line -- WOW.  If we don't get Stroud, then the Tripplett release is a disaster.  By the way, Chris Brown thinks Johnson has not gotten any love (calls) from other teams -- boy, if we get B. Johnson (who I thought was the no. 1 receiver and impossible to get without a mega contract), the Bills will have had a great FA day.

by labill on Feb 29, 2008 7:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Solid yes, but
was or should have been depth.  He proved it over the past two seasons.  He should have been a starter or rotational, but didn't do it in Buffalo.  Maybe he is just a victim of a banged up, beat up and sub par defense.  I hope there finalizing Stroud and making "love" calls to Johnson.  That would be great.

by btk0930 on Feb 29, 2008 7:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

labill & SP
You guys have me confused.  Sometimes I think I understand the cap, and then other times I realize I don't.

One of you guys is saying 1.1 to the cap, real money 2.7.  The other is saying 6 cash to the cap.  Whatever it is, I'm sure it's somewhere in between.

I think the answer is whether or not there was a signing bonus due soon.  Otherwise, I really don't see the reason to dump him now.

triplett
blows.  Glad to see him go.  They have to be getting Stroud.  WE NEED TO IMPROVE THE OVERALL TALENT on this team.  You can argue Triplett is still of value, but I'm sure they looked into trading him, cuz its common sense.  Now, this all hinges on getting Stroud.

Triplett doesn't really blow..
I mean, he's not that bad.  Better than Erik Flowers...

Still, why would you release him, unless the ink is dry on a Stroud trade?  I'm not trying to be pessimistic, but I saw the Sabres lose a 2nd rounder because their fax machine broke.  It's just typical Buffalo skepticism.

Why take that chance?

by krytime on Feb 29, 2008 8:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Tripplett
Tripplett's better than Kyle Williams and Jason Jefferson too.  And as of last year, Jauron deemed him better than John McCargo.  This move makes no sense unless it was made to clear up funds for Stroud and even then it should have been done after the fact.  Really strange move.

What may have happened
Don't forget guys, that if the Stroud deal is a go, the Bills may have asked Triplett to rework his contract, and he may have refused.

Rather than deal with a guy who is now angry, they choose to cut him, bring Stroud in, and wait and see if Triplett gets a new contract soon. If he doesn't I wouldn't be surprised if they bring him back at a lesser number as not many teams are looking for him.

This way we have Stroud and McCargo as the #1 and 2 DTs, with Williams and Triplett (at a lower cost) as the #3 and 4 backups, not a bad group.

So how done was Pat Williams when we let him go Tommie boy??? Stick a fork in him level right?

by WABillsfan on Feb 29, 2008 8:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If that happens...
That's genius by the Bills accountants.  But, it doesn't speak well of the organization.  That's not how to treat your employees.  I wouldn't applauad this move.  We have a hard enough time enticing guys to a climate that can be at times, unfriendly.  We need to overcome that, and it certainly isn't by penny pinching in that example.

by krytime on Feb 29, 2008 8:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

meh
In the nfl that is how you treat your employees. When you have an underachieving employee, that is how you treat them. Tripplett was given a large FA contract and performed at a backup level in a starter position.

I champion players' causes all the time (see recent CBA discussion), but I don't feel bad for players that get dropped after they have already made their money. Good luck wherever you land Larry, maybe even back to Buff.

by jmorris0823 on Feb 29, 2008 9:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

explanation
will come when the next FA press conference is done at OBD.  I guess the only reasonable explanation is that they are saving some cap room, brining in Stroud for a big contract, where disappointed in Tripletts play, and are planning on drafting a DT as well.

That is the logic I would use.  Jauron said today he wants toughness, physicality.  Triplett does not bring that, he is not the kind of DT they need to allow these LB's to swarm sideline to sideline to attack ball carriers.

Stroud deal is OFF
Per PFT:

ROGERS TRADE OFF

The trade between the Lions and the Bengals for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is apparently off.

According to Mike O'Hara of the Detroit News, the deal was not consummated and the Lions will be looking to send Rogers elsewhere.  The two teams had agreed that Rogers would head to the Bengals for a third-round and a fifth-round pick.

In our view, that's not bad news for the Bengals.  Maybe it means that someone within the organization raised an alarm about the 2007 allegations against Rogers regarding his conduct in a strip club.  Though he wasn't charged, is that really the kind of guy that the team should be signing giving its recent history of struggles with off-field issues?

-- Hey, we may have a chance on this one guys! What a killing it would be if we bagged both? Though that would NEVER happen, could you imagine if the Bills coughed up both 3rds and our 5ths for BOTH Stroud and Rogers? Holy Cripes!

So how done was Pat Williams when we let him go Tommie boy??? Stick a fork in him level right?

krytime Question
Here is what I understand to be Tripplett's contract entered into in 2005, according to Bills Daily:  5 yrs. $18M, of which SB was $5.5M; Base $760,000 (2006); $1.685M (2007); $1.685M (2008); $1.935M (2009); $2.185M (2010). $4.25M LTBE Incentives.  He would have accounted for $3.8M against the cap this year if we kept him (from BillsZone -- $1.7M salary, $1.1M SB amortized, $1M other bonus), but having cut him, he will only account for $1.1M (the SB portion) -- thus, $2.7M savings against the cap (would have been $3.8M if we kept him).  SP maybe talking about the cap savings over the life of the contract (as compared to if we kept him --he'll still cost us!).  I am talking about this year's cap.

by labill on Feb 29, 2008 8:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

But signing bonuses accelerate...
From that, it's easy to see where the $2.7 million in "cash to cap" (real money) comes from - the $1.7M salary plus $1M other bonus.

But a player that's released has the rest of his signing bonus (three years at $1.1 million) all count against this year's salary cap, so it should be $3.3 against the cap.
(see the useful article at http://www.askthecommish.com/salarycap/faq.asp)

That makes it sound like a savings of $0.5 million to the cap and $2.7 million in real money...

by Krenn on Feb 29, 2008 8:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for clearing that up.
What the frig is happening with Rogers?  I thought that was a done deal to Cincy.  I'll be honest - a guy who gets in trouble at a strip club, while employed by an NFL team, is just stupid.

WABillsfan - why do you say Stroud deal is off?  Do you think Rogers' sudden availability stalls talk?  If I'm guessing, and I only am, I will say that Jauron nixed any attempts at Rogers.  If they wanted him, he would have been had at 12:00:01 this morning.

by krytime on Feb 29, 2008 8:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

As noted above
I had a brain fart while putting up the Rogers note, I meant to say Rogers, not Stroud. I think Stroud still happens, no questions, but wouldn't the Bills also consider bagging Rogers too if the price would be the same? We got 2 third rounders and most likely 2 fifths this year. Why not use them both on these two guys? What a killing it would be!

Bruce to San Fran
per PFT

BRUCE LANDS IN SAN FRAN

You know, we thought for a second about setting this story up by tapping into certain stereotypes about San Francisco and men named Bruce.  But we're now officially above such attempts at obvious and lowbrow humor.

Anyway, the 49ers have signed receiver Isaac Bruce to a two-year deal, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

The move reunites Bruce with Mike Martz, who was the Rams' offensive coordinator for their only Super Bowl win and thereafter the head coach for six seasons.

-- This looked like a forgone conclusion as soon as he was cut and with Mike M out there running the show,

Hope we got a backup plan....
Per PFT:

FLORENCE A JAG?

Chargers cornerback Drayton Florence is looking for a new team.  On Friday, he visited with the Bucs.  But now he's on his way to Jacksonville, and he's expected to join the Jaguars.

Per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, a deal with the Jags is "all but done."

Meanwhile, former Chargers running back Michael Turner remains in Atlanta, and his agent is negotiating with the teams about a contract.

-- Ummmmm, this would be bad, I like the look of this kid, and that means were going to be scrambling to get Vet help at this position with more teams than quality players. We are not amused, as the Queen would say.

I am worried
that Cinncinnati will now focus on Stroud... perhaps the Rogers deal collapsing (because of Rogers character) has raised the price, rather than lowered it, for Stroud.

by labill on Feb 29, 2008 8:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Plan B if Florence is off the market?
Per PFT:

LITO OUT THE DOOR?

With cornerback Asante Samuel in the fold, the Eagles are now going to attempt to trade cornerback Lito Sheppard, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Calls are already coming in for Sheppard, a first-round draft pick in 2002 who is still only 26 years old.

In recent weeks, there were rumors that that Sheppard was on he block, and the team strongly denied it.  In hindsight, it's likely that the Eagles didn't want to tip their hand regarding their plans to pursue Samuel.

Sheppard is under contract for four more seasons, with base salaries of $2 million in 2008, $3 million in 2009, $3.7 million in 2010, and $4.25 million in 2011.

Rogers is now a Brown
Per PFT:

ROGERS TO BROWNS A DONE DEAL

According to Hondo Carpenter of SpartanNation.com, who as we understand it is very well plugged in as to the goings on in Motown, the Lions have finalized a trade of defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Browns.

In return, the Lions reportedly will get cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft choice.

Carpenter says that the league office rejected a trade that would have sent Rogers to the Bengals for a third-round and a fifth-round pick.

-- Not sure as to why the League Office would have shot down the Rogers trade unless they were afraid of the dude getting into truly serious trouble down there where they seem to be trying to get in the Police Blotter on a nightly basis. Good move by the Browns I have to admit.

Well thus far
it looks like a typical el cheapo maneuver from the front office.

We need a stud DT in here.  One was in town visiting and the FO did not want to give him a new deal?  Right now, this just reeks of going cheap again.  There's no reason not to spend some money on a DT, especially considering how much we have available.

Wow. I don't see it that way at ALL.
Considering the fact that the Bills were surprised that Stroud wanted to re-work his deal, doesn't that imply that the team was WILLING TO PAY the $16.5 million that he's due in base salary over the next three years - the main reason Jacksonville's trying to trade him in the first place? Not sure how that's cheap at all...

CHEAP!!!
We all saw what Tommy Kelly got on the open market.  Kris Jenkins got a new contract when the Jets traded for him.  Stroud is obviously underpaid now and one of the reasons he wants to be traded is he wants a new contract that will pay him the new market value.  We saw Buffalo pull this same crap last year with Darwin Walker, who ended up contributing nothing anyway last year, but if Buffalo knew he sucked, why trade for him in the first place?  Face it, Buffalo realizes DT has been a hole for 3 seasons and yet they will not pay to fix the problem.  That's cheap.  I'm so sick of their garbage bin mentality.  The Bills were willing to pay Stroud 16.5 mil for 3 years because it's well below what Stroud would get as a free agent.  The fact that Buffalo was "surprised" that he wanted a new deal is copout covering the team's unwavering frugality.  Come on, Brian- don't go Chris Brown on me.

  2. Jim Nantz and Phil Simms
  3. Josh Reed
  4. 53 Dolphins players and 18 Dolphins coaches
  5. Robert Royal
  6. 53 Jets players abd 18 Jets coaches
  7. Every analyst on ESPN
  8. Dick Ebersol
  9. 53 Eagles players, 17 coaches (my buddy works for them), and 3 million fans in SE Pennsylvania
  10. Perry Fewell

Is a topic for another post.  I'd like to see the top 100, alltime.  Wow - you have a lot of anger.

Wow
I don't know that I would put Josh reed over those ESPN analysts, Tony Kornheiser, John Miller, Joe Morgan, and Jaws, are all tough to take. I'm beginning to think that they hire annoying people on purpose, but I'm not sure what the point of that is.

Brown
Don't worry, Brian; I go to your site before Brown's because while you both have the news updated rapidly, you don't come off as a slimey public relations specialist like Chris Brown.  Keep up the good work, but remember- your target audience is people like me who find Brown's coverage of OBD to be as reliable as the state run paper of the Kremlin at the height of the Cold War.

again... i'm on nick's side of this argument
this team is simply unwilling to make the financial commitment to be successful and it's becoming pitiful.

As for Stroud, Brian - I don't think it's about the base salary or his original deal.  Buffalo doesn't want to give him a new contract because they don't want to pay him $10-$15 million in guarantees.  They don't want to have to pay the up front cash becuase that's "extra" money coming out of Ralph's pocket that is simply unexceptable to this organization.  I think that's why they saw Stroud as such a good option.  Yeah, he was scheduled to make a good amount the next three seasons, but that amount becomes vary affordable when you consider that Buffalo would not have to pay any guarantee or bonus money on top of it.  Very "low risk" that way.

It's not the salary cap or the base salaries that's the problem; it's the bonus money.

Stroud
I like him and thought he would be a solid acquisition, but thats a lot of money for a 30 year old DT with chronic ankle problems, and a drug suspension on his record. Even if his ankle is fine how many good years are we going to get out of him? 3 tops. $15 million of guarantees and a 5 or 6 year extension is a lot to ask.

Stroud wasn't the only option
well it didn't just have to be him though.  Corey Williams.  Kris Jenkins.  Shaun Rogers.  Other options were out there.  Here are Scout's Inc./ESPN's ranking of the top 10 DT's in the NFL:

1 Tommie Harris 85
2 Casey Hampton 84
3 John Henderson 81
4 Shaun Rogers 80
5 Marcus Stroud 80
6 Luis Castillo 79
7 Cory Redding 78
8 Mike Patterson 78
9 Haloti Ngata 76
10 Albert Haynesworth 75

That means the Bills had a crack at two of the top five DT's in football and decided not to pull the trigger. They have to do better then that.

Cheap might not be the best word.
Although, it does apply to an extent.  All of these guys are ego maniacs.  Most crave the attention.  I think Stroud wants to hear the Bills say, "Hey, Jax doesn't want you, but we really do.  We want you so bad, that we want to give you more money.  We want you to be a Bill for the rest of your career."

Stroud deosn't want to hear, "Well, we'll take you off of Jax's hands, as long as we just keep the contract status quo.  Sound good?"

As stupid as it sounds, I think Stroud would feel insulted if he were the only first tier DT to move, and not get a contract extension.
