Blogger Interviews: Stroud, Mitchell and Johnson are Bills

It's an exciting time to be a fan of the Buffalo Bills. Over the past two days, the Bills have been aggressive in significantly upgrading the front seven of their beleaguered defense. Yesterday, the team signed LB Kawika Mitchell of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Today, the splash was even bigger, as the Bills added two (starting?) defensive tackles in former Jaguar Marcus Stroud and former Viking Spencer Johnson.

One of our favorite features to run is the good old blogger interview, and it just so happens that the three SB Nation bloggers who know these players best graciously stepped up to the plate to answer questions about the three newest Bills. In a trifecta of interviews, here's what SB Nation's finest had to say about the three newest Bills:

USA Today

River City Rage, Big Cat Country, on Marcus Stroud:

First off, are you going to miss Marcus Stroud?

Honestly, no. His 2007 campaign was a disappointment from top to bottom and it's unclear if he's ever going to return to his Pro Bowl form. The Jaguars' run defense was worse than normal, and when Stroud was suspended for four games, it didn't change. His impact on the defense was marginal and I'm glad we were able to get some value out of him rather than overpay him or force a pay cut.

How long would you say it's been since he's played at that Pro Bowl level you mentioned?

I think 2005 was his last dominant year, 2006 saw the struggle with injuries start, playing only 11 games. Then with the off-season microfracture surgery, he's just plain lost a step. His quickness is what makes him so good, but when he's not fast, he's just another big guy on the line.

At his peak, where would you say Stroud fits in among the NFL's elite tackles?

Top five. The only thing that holds him back is that it's hard to tell who benefited more from the other, Stroud or John Henderson. Stroud always got the Pro Bowl nod, but Henderson does some wonderful things as well. The two of them could collapse any pocket; that's what made them so disruptive.

Do you believe Stroud could succed, post-injury, in a rotation where he's not counted on as much as he was in Jacksonville?

Yes, without a doubt. I'm not saying the guy is done, just that he's not the player he used to be. Limiting snaps is a good way to keep him healthy and effective. I don't know that he'll be a 65 tackle guy again like he was in 2003 and 2004 though. But use him right and he'll do some good things. Stroud will certainly command a double team from time to time, provided he can get some pressure up the middle. You'll also probably see more outside runs, as he's a pretty big guy stuffing the run up the middle.

Final thoughts on Stroud's Jaguars career and the "legacy" he leaves behind?

Stroud was the cornerstone of a very physical Jaguars defense; he's been a gift from Tom Coughlin since he was drafted, and he's very much the reason why the Jaguars are known for being such a nasty defensive team. He brought that attitude in with him and inspired some great play. If there was ever a time for a player to leave a team and in good terms, it's this time. I'll miss him, and I'm sure Peyton Manning, David Carr, and the other quarterbacks he's killed will feel better with him farther away.

AP Photo

ETVal, Big Blue View, on Kawika Mitchell:

Kawika Mitchell is a very solid outside linebacker, and should be a good addition to the Buffalo Bills' defense. The Giants would have liked to keep the five-year veteran, but the price was too high and the Giants do have players who can step in.

Anyway, what are the Bills getting? They are getting a guy who was a decent middle linebacker for four years in Kansas City, then made a smooth transition to the outside during his one year in New York. He's not a spectacular player, but he doesn't make mistakes and he doesn't miss tackles. He's also a solid citizen who doesn't make waves. He will provide some leadership on the Buffalo defense as well as being a good player.

This was a good signing for the Bills, even though I think they probably overpaid.

Viking Update

Gonzo, Daily Norseman, on Spencer Johnson:

I personally think that there's a lot of teams in the NFL that Spencer Johnson could be a starting DT for... it just so happens that he was stuck behind the best DT combo in the NFL in the Irresistable Force and the Immovable Object (or, as you might know them, Kevin and Pat Williams). We got Johnson as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn in 2004, and he's performed very well in a reserve role for us. He even notched 3 sacks for us last year in limited playing time. He's got some pretty good quickness for a DT, and has a very good first step. However, because he's a bit undersized (he's listed at 285, but I think that's giving him about 10 extra pounds), he can get pushed around a little bit if an OL gets a hold of him. I have no doubt that he'll be a good addition for the Bills, but his impact will be felt more as an interior pass rusher than it will be as an all-around defensive tackle, in my opinion.

River City Rage's
discussion about Stroud is a little concerning. I only know what I saw, and when I saw the Jags play the guy was a beast.  He would blow up the interior of the line and force all kinds of problems for the QB's and RB's.

I, for one, believe we have gotten a stud.

I'm not worried
The Jags have been great at DT for years, and Stroud has had a couple of off years. There's no reason to think he can't bounce back, especially if the Bills made him pass a physical. I'm not worried at all - especially for the price (in both contract and compensation) we paid.

Rotation, Rotation, Rotation
McCargo, Stroud, Williams, Johnson, Shoebel, Kelsay...

These guys are going to be all over the place, and basically, Stroud will be the anchor that the rest of the guys feed off of. He is a vet with a gritty attitude, and someone people will be forced to reckon with. After we beat teams up with him, and a most likely improved, bigger and stronger McCargo, then our penetrators wil have their way. even in Jacksonville, they did not have the speed on the edge that we have with Shoebel and Kelsay and that is going to shake some things up, especially up in New England. Love it all, no matter what anybody says. Stroud will be in a position to succeed and we will all benefit

The Bills can win every game

Thanks
Great work Brian. Hearing what other dedicated fans/bloggers think of their team and players is worth much more then a drive by blurb from the national press.

That being said, I hope he is wrong on Stroud. I always worry a bit when someone gets caught using steroids and comes back to a sub par performance.

We'll be fine
Stroud may have had issues last year due to the surgery in 2006, but most Microfracture work requires 2, I repeat 2 years to get healthy from. Amare Stoudemire of the Suns in the NBA had microfracture in the spring of 2006 as well on his knee, and over the past 2, repeat 2 years, he has gotten back into his pre-injury form.

With Stroud we need to make sure a couple of things are done:
1- Keep his weight in check, which shouldn't be an issue as the dude will be motivated this season.
2- Stay on him to rehab and exercise year round, which I'm hoping begins in a couple of weeks.
3- Rest the big man, I think rotating him will pay us the biggest dividends as the best players last longer the less they get beat up. I think our new rotation, plus another DT with upside needing some coaching up, brought in via the draft could benefit him for years to come.

I advocated quite a while ago that the Bills should bag Kawika MItchell as I watch the Giants when the Bills are either not playing or on tv timeout and I liked what I saw. He is a smart player, durable, and doesn't make boneheaded mistakes. He isn't a turnover machine or anything, but he won't get us killed either. I think we'll be getting a speedy developmental player in the 4th this year.

The Johnson signing is one I think will pay big dvidends. He has shown he is a better player than Triplett, he is younger, and he will spell Stroud which means BOTH guys careers with us should be nice and long. Finally, the dude can knife the gap, and if Daily Norseman is to be believed, we just stole a 2b starter behind Stroud #1, and McCargo #2a. All hail ODB for making the right moves and opening their wallets!!!

So how done was Pat Williams when we let him go Tommie boy??? Stick a fork in him level right?

In good shape
Brian, first and foremost, you have done an exceptional job with the free agency, especially considering everything that is on your plate.  Secondly, the Bills did a lot of what they had to do by shoring up the defense.  Thirdly, they still need to get a WR or TE in FA.  Finally, then they can go after any "Best Available" Player/target that they want to in the draft.

Lance Briggs resigns with the Bears
There goes our other LB in our new 3-4 scheme. Kidding, kidding.

It is funny though, just last year he said he hated it there. Now he's going to be there for pretty much the rest of his career.

Looking very very good
I for one and more happy then words can say tonight, and also a little inebriated, but hey. I think that we got a stud in Stroud, and Mitchell is a very very solid, high motor, great teammate player, and I am very happy with Johnson, I have been looking into this kid and I loved the Daily Norsemans take on him, we have really really upgraded our D so far!

Berrian Contract
SI is reporting Berrians contract at 6 years for $42m, with $16m in guarantees.

Hopefully now that the bar has been set, we can close a deal with our visitors on Sunday.

by Thronsen on Mar 2, 2008 4:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Only one problem with that
Its absolutely ridiculous to pay Berrian that sort of cash. Randy Moss? Sure bleeping right you pay HIM that sort of cash. Berrian is at BEST a 1b or #2 wideout, he is not Moss by any standard and should NOT be paid that type of money.

I think the Vikes are suffering from Al "Space Alien" Davisitis right now. To much cash and to little brain cells to use it wisely. The thing that SCARES the heck out of me on this, is this: What in the world will Lee's agent be arguing for now? When a good, but NO WAY close to a great player gets this sort of loot, how will that affect us?!?!?!? The Briggs contract is a bit high, but I think he got the hometown payup due to Berrian taking off and the Bears needing to quell the rancor of their fan base over resinging Grossman and losing Berrian. I think we can still get Angelo at a good rate, especially since I think he likes playing in Buffalo for DJ.

GO BILLS!

So how done was Pat Williams when we let him go Tommie boy??? Stick a fork in him level right?

On the other end
Stallworth's contract was 5 years, $22 million, according to PFT (sixth and seventh years are options).

I think most people would agree that Bryant Johnson should be in between Stallworth and Berrian, so we have a lower limit now as well...

by Krenn on Mar 2, 2008 9:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

New deals
I think Crowell should expect a deal similar to what we gave Mitchell (5 yr $17.5M with $5.5M guaranteed) or what the Chiefs gave Demorrio Williams (5 yr $16M with $5M guaranteed).  I just don't see how Crowell is worth any more than that. He's a solid player, but he's no star.  A 5 yr $16-20M deal with $5-7M guaranteed should be plenty and may even be a little much.

The Berrian deal is ridiculous. That guy is nothing more than a decent deep threat and not much else. He's very similar to Evans though. Lee is a better WR, but he shouldn't expect to get any more money than that. He's also a #1b or #2 WR, but I wouldn't offer him Berrian money because that deal is nuts. The Stallworth deal is a nice baseline though...

Yeah
Yeah its definitely high, youre right. I just cant help but myself from thinking though that if we do land a WR and TE, it completely frees us up in the draft to go for the best player available all day.

Wow though, Lee demanding a monster contract. Like Brian, I think to be a true #1 you need to show versatility that Lee struggles with.

BTW at $42m, Berrian will earn more in 4 minutes of game time then RW paid for the franchise.

Stroud
Did anyone catch the comments from the guy at Big Cat country who did the interview with Brian on Stroud?  He seems to think that JAX "fleeced" Buffalo on this deal.

Either we're all missing something, or this guy is an idiot.  Although Stroud has had some issues the last two years, there is no reason to think he can't bounce back.  His contract certainly isn't outrageous, especially if you compare it right now to Tommy Kelly's.

And a third and a fifth is really not much to give up for three time Pro Bowler who is just turning thirty.  For whatever reason, Stroud wanted out of JAX.

So which is it?  Are we blind in our admiration for Stroud, and we did get "fleeced," or does this guys just not know what the hell he is talking about?

by krytime on Mar 2, 2008 2:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Getting fleeced
It's hard to get 'fleeced' when all you gave up was a 3rd and 5th and restructured his contract to pay him more guaranteed money up front.

Teams like Cleveland or the Jets are in position to be truly fleeced, giving up picks AND monster contracts to their new DT's.

If Stroud is 100%, which there is no reason to believe otherwise, I think we'll have gotten the MUCH BETTER end of this trade.  I think he'll be hungry to prove Jax wrong about him and prove he's still one of the best 5 DT's in the NFL.  Plus, if he's still only got the 3 years left on his original deal, he'll eventually want a longer deal, so he'll be playing with extra incentive there....

Fleecing
I know.  I don't get where that guy is coming from.  He's says they have great depth at the position too.  So Grady freakin' Jackson is now great depth?

Either that guy is just crying sour grapes because Stroud didn't want to be there anymore, or he really doesn't know anything about football, and is just trying to make a few bucks off of a website.
