RB Lynch an Evolving Star in Buffalo

Lynch looks to build on solid rookie season (BuffaloBills.com)

It's not often that an NFL rookie plays one season and is then considered the face of his franchise. That's exactly what happened with Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, however. In a season when the Bills dealt with tragic injury, shuffled quarterbacks and missed the playoffs yet again, Lynch was the steadying force for a franchise still headed in the right direction. He's a hard-working, fun-loving guy, and his gritty, never-say-die running style has made him an instant fan favorite in blue collar Buffalo.

Entering his second season in the league, the expectations for Lynch continue to grow. He'll once again be counted on as the centerpiece for offensive coordinator Turk Schonert's re-tooled scheme. He's expected to improve on his rookie season production, regardless of whether or not the team makes significant improvements around him offensively. If he can stay healthy, improve on certain areas of his game and he's used in a slightly different fashion, you may very well see Lynch toting the rock in Honolulu next February.

Rookie Season Retro
It's sort of lost in the translation of Lynch's excellent rookie season, but it certainly is worth discussing: Buffalo's coaching staff ran Lynch into the ground last year. It's hard to blame them, since Lynch was clearly their only offensive threat (I point my finger at you, Lee Evans), so it makes sense that Lynch carried the ball 280 times in 13 games, over 21 carries per game. With opposing defenses stacked against him, Lynch was still able to rip off an average of four yards per carry - giving testament not only of his ability to make something out of nothing, but to make at least one or two big runs per game. Add in the fact that Lynch was involved in eight of the team's 20 offensive touchdowns, and you begin to see his value.

Lynch was a dynamic rookie. You saw it when opposing defense chose to shut him down rather than Evans, the seasoned explosive threat (though they certainly concentrated on him as well). You saw it when he threw touchdown passes, ripped off big runs and constantly provided energy to the offense. You even saw it when Lynch was out of the lineup - Fred Jackson played well in his absence, but there was just something missing. That dynamic element is what makes Lynch a fan favorite, and it's something that he'll need to continue to display entering his sophomore season.

Lynch and the Passing Game
The one area of Buffalo's offense where Lynch is expected to have a bigger impact next season is in the passing game. No, I'm not talking about his pass protection - Lynch proved last season that he's more than capable of effectively picking up a blitz, which he'll need to continue to do for young QB Trent Edwards - I'm talking about his 18 rookie receptions.

Lynch entered the NFL with the hype that he was an excellent receiver out of the backfield, and he didn't disappoint. Sure, he only had 18 receptions, but he averaged over 10 yards per reception and had some excellent run-after-catch moments on screen passes against the Giants and Eagles. Expect Schonert to at least double his receptions out of the backfield this season - it adds another element to Lynch's game that defenders must consider, and it will make Lynch more dynamic than he already is.

"Beast Mode", version 2008
What can we expect to see from Lynch next season? My early guess is that, considering the club would like to feature more of a two-back system with Fred Jackson, Lynch won't get many more carries than he did this past season. We've got to keep the kid fresh, much like the Chargers do with LaDainian Tomlinson (except Lynch wouldn't keep himself off the field in the playoffs). If Lynch plays all 16 games next season - boy, do we need him to - I would expect 320 carries for about 1,350 yards and 8 to 10 touchdowns. Add in the 35 receptions, 360 yards and maybe another score or two, and you're looking at Pro Bowl numbers. Certainly another team MVP as well.

That's the kind of ability that Lynch has. Now it's time for Turk Schonert to realize that potential, even while employing his two-back scheme. Lynch has emerged as the face of the franchise, and the one player that Bills fans follow most closely. He's a perfect fit in Buffalo. He should only get better in 2008. But before we get there, let's take one last look at Lynch's stellar rookie season with a video provided by the fine folks at Bills Insider:

No doubt....
Why can't it be late August already? I am so ready to see some action. Actually let me take that back I wish it was late April already and we could get this draft started, then I'm ready for football!

i gotta admit...
Lynch wasn't my first choice at the number 12 pick last year, but boy am I glad have him.

I love his running style. His toughnesss.  His character.

I'm anxious to see how turk plans on using Lynch this season.  Will he be in on third downs?  Will he always have a lead blocker?  Will he be split out wide?  Will he catch the ball out of the backfield more often?

Some think Turk is going to a more west coast offense type of system.  I HATE the WCO, but if I had to find a silver lining, I guess that means Lynch will get a lot more touches in the passing game.

I think Lynch can play a role very similar to what Tiki Barber was in NY and Brian Westbrook is now in Philly.  If the offense wants to improve, Lynch needs to be the centerpiece.

My  guess:  1440 rusing yards, 35 receptions for 370 yards and 13 total TDs.

Good points
I wasn't that high on Lynch when we drafted him. I didn't think he was going to fit in our power running game, but boy was I wrong. I have been thoroughly impressed with his ability to churn out extra yards and fight like crazy to get first downs. I love that about him.  I thought we'd see more big plays out of him, but we did see more than we saw with the previous RB who shall remain nameless (but not babyless). I think we'll see more this year if Trent can keep defenses honest in the pass game.

Speaking of the pass game, this is where I was most perturbed by Fairchild. He seemed to refuse getting Lynch the ball in space and in the passing game. He's quick, shifty and has good hands, yet we saw very few attempts to take advantage of that. I will never understand what SF-M was thinking last year.  With all that said, Schonert better use Lynch to his full capabilities. I envision a lot of screens and swing passes this year to Lynch (and Freddie for that matter). Since we have no idea how our rookie WR will acclimate himself early on, we will need to utilized ALL our weapons in the pass game.

If Lynch gets 18-20 carries a game and another 4-6 catches, we can envision a pretty big season for him.  As of now, I'd guess 1350 yards rushing with 10 TD's and another 40 catches for 380 yards and 2 TD's. I would even like that reception number to increase as I feel our offense would really excel getting Lynch the ball in the passing game.  I just want the kid to stay healthy and show the league how good he is. I love Jackson, but Lynch is the guy I want touching the ball almost all the time in the backfield.

Staying healthy
is absolutely the key. That's why Fred Jackson can be so valuable to this team - he's not as explosive or determined as Lynch is, but he has a very similar skill set and can make plays himself. We won't lose a ton giving Jackson 8-10 touches per game himself, and it will maximize the effects of every Lynch touch.

Don't forget about Wright...
As may have been mentioned before, he is a guy who is going to be gunning for the spell RB spot, and this is only going to push Jackson and Lynch to be better. It is a good group of backs who will be pushing each other all the way.
And right now, even though it is off topic, I'd like to say that a reciver will be picked at 11 and then the Bills will trade back into the first and grab Davis the USC TE. I just have a feeling. Two needs, they know who they want and they will get them. Then they will take the best players available thereafter. Probably should do a diary but ai don't have time

Agree
with the Wright comment and the wideout comment. I don't think Fred Davis is worth a first-round pick. In fact, I don't think he's the best tight end available this year. I'd be satisfied if the Bills kept their picks, stayed at 42 and took Martellus Bennett, my new favorite TE prospect.

TE and Davis
I like Davis a lot, but I agree, no way he is a first rounder.  And like Brian, Bennett is easy on my eyes.  I just can't shake Jermichael Finley though...

Better than I
You should know these TEs as I get most of my info on prospects from here. If thats the consensus than I see it as being probable. And again, about the RBs, in every position competition has caused there to be upgrades within the depth chart for the Bills under Jauron and I am excited to see the in house improvement this year

I disagree about Jackson and Lynch
The two backs really don't have the same skill set IMO.  One has uses his quickness and track speed to be effective and avoid the big hit and also uses his near WR receiving talent.  I would argue that Jackson can be more explosive.  If he can learn to block better, he can be an elite 3rd down back

However, there may be no runner as determined in the league as Lynch. (Although Barber comes to mind.)  He is a true every down back, that can juke by you, run by you, and especially, run through you, and two of your friends.  Haven't seen this much heart in a player since Henry played 04 with a cracked rib.

With a 80-20 split, Lynch and Jackson can be the league's top thunder/lighting combo.

by Kumario! on Mar 26, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I meant
in the sense that both are multi-dimensional and can both run and receive the ball, as well as block. I actually think Lynch is faster than Jackson.

blocking from the RBs
I made a comment earlier lauding Thurman Thomas' blocking, and how I thought Lynch did a nice job in his first year at that too.

But, I may have been selling Fred Jackson short.  To be honest, in his very short stint as the feature guy, I thought he blocked exceptionally well.

I'd like to think they have a very good chance to be one of the better one-two punch duos as any tandem in the league.

by krytime on Mar 26, 2008 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jackson doesn't have track speed
In fact, he's not as fast as Lynch.

Remember when he got caught by the Redskins backup safety on that long reception?  He's pretty elusive and VERY shifty, but he does not possess breakaway speed.

~K

by Kurupt on Mar 26, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

track star
I agree - Fred is no track star.  But I think he has enough speed in his overall game to be a good NFL RB.  Do you?

Lynch Projections
I think those numbers are right on par.  I'm actually inclined to give him more receptions (2.5 - 3 a game), as I really think he'll be much more involved in the passing game this year than last.

One thing I would love to see
How about this: The Bills start out lining up with both Lynch and Jackson in the back field, and three receivers, then just before the snap, both Lynch and Jackson spread out wide giving the Bills a 5 WR set. forcing the defense to all of a sudden have to put two linebackers one-on-one with the two backs. I would love to see something that creative (which I admit isn't crazy creative but compared to the lame junk the Bills always seem to run, it's like Picasso.)

i dont think so
7. All players of offensive team must be stationary at snap, except one back who may be in motion parallel to scrimmage line or backward (not forward).

NFL rules state only one player can be in motion at the snap, and that one player must be moving parallel to the line of scrimmage. If the player turns to face "upfield", the player must come to a set position for one full second before the snap.

Love Marshawn
He really reminds me of Thurman.  I mean it too, Lynch is a bigger, less shifty version but still runs alot like #34.

If we can add a WR and TE, and then get Marshawn involved in the passing game more, I don't see any reason why he won't have a huge year.

by RabidBuffalo on Mar 26, 2008 11:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Reminds me of Thurman
When you say that, the first thing that comes to my mind, is his blocking.  Lynch really impressed me toward the end of the season with his blitz pickups.  That's one thing Thomas never got enough credit for.  His ability to block was the reason the Bills were able to run a 3 WR set, and the reason McKeller could run routes - they didn't need a TE or FB to stay in to block.

by krytime on Mar 26, 2008 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Comparisons..
I actually don't see the Thurman Thomas thing as I think he was a little shiftier in his style. Marshawn reminds me of a young Edgerrin James (which is not a knock by any means); he is powerful, but has good hands and is definitely a good blocker.
Regarding Thurman, one thing that always rubs me wrong is how you always hear about Marshall Faulk being the guy who truly revolutionized the duel threat back (running, and catching)...that is garbage, Thurman Thomas is hands down the best duel threat back of all time had hands. He led the league in all purpose yards year after year in the early 90's, its sad he will never get the full credit that I feel he deserves.

i think
among people who really know football it is obvious that Thurman Thomas was Marshall Faulk before Marshall Faulk. Who cares what wish washy fans know anyway? They're the same people who suddenly made Eli Manning their wallpaper on their computers after the Super Bowl. ESPN sucks, they report on news that  is sensationalized and trivial, and most idiots get their sports news from there. Who cares? Those who love the game know about Thurman.

Faulk and Fantasy Football
Fantasy Football really didn't hit mainstream until Thermal's career was over.  No one can argue that FF was really helped solidify the NFL as #1 amongst the major sports, along with gambling.

With that said, FF has also skewed the perception of all time rankings when comparing the greats.  Make no mistake about it, Faulk was great.  But Thomas was a better football player, period.  FF helped Faulk's popularity a lot more than it ever did for Thermal, and it's a shame more "football" fans don't realize that.

Couldn't agree more
Thurman was an amazing back. Maybe not the first true all-purpose back (Roger Craig probably has that title), but he was the best. I remember Thurman being used in so many types of formations and different ways.  He was just a great back, I am so glad he got into the Hall. Now if we can just get Kent and Andre in along with Bruce, we should be set.

Lynch
This kid really impressed me last season on an offense that was pretty inept.  Especially coming out of the gates with JP at the helm, the offense performed below-average but Lynch was a bright spot.  When we took him in the draft I admit I was a little shocked, just cuz what I had heard about some off-field question marks which turned out to be not a serious knock on his character.  When Patrick Willis was drafted, I was disappointed, but then I learn post-draft some rumblings they liked POZ over him anyhow.

But let's not focus on the past.  The point is that beast-mode is phenomenal.  He gets HARD-EARNED yards which are the hardest to come by in the NFL.  Now, the whole key is to add a combo to him, of Freddy Jackson/Dwayne Wright, to add a more DYNAMIC RB trio.  Along with that add a New VErsion, take-chances offense with Schonert, and then the only question-mark is one Trent Edwards.....

We've got big plans for that day. Setting aside the fact that we might be blogging from the upgraded platform by then, we'll be live-blogging the event. Instant updates, blogger interviews, open threads... the works. You're going to want to lock it in here for sure.

We've also got a network-wide announcement about the Draft that we'll be making in the near future that will knock your socks off. It doesn't necessarily effect our blog in a big way, but it's incredibly cool nonetheless. Stay tuned for that as well.

Beast Mode MANIA!
First I want to say that I am glad to be joining this blog! Thank God I found this website because the major media gives the BILLS no coverage plus no body loves their team more than us. Plus even when they do, it for 6 seconds and they downplay everything we do.... that brings me to my main man Mr. Lynch, last year he had a hell of a season, but A. Peterson got all the credit. Now i'm not say Peterson isn't a great back, but if Lynch hadn't missed those 3 games the discussion of great young backs would be different.... by the way, this site gives me something to do at work!

by LuBAR on Mar 26, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i have this site
on as a tab constantly at work. Its the only thing that keeps me sane. Welcome to the sight. I think Adrian Peterson is going to have his career cut short by injury. That's usually what happens to those running backs that run high off the ground. Eric Dickerson/Gale Sayers come to mind. I think Marshawn may not have his explosiveness but that when all is said and done, he will have had the longer and more productive career of the two. At least if we get some receivers so we don't run him into the ground!

Bills never get credit
I completley agree with you, the bills don't get even close to the media attention it deserves. In fact the last thing I've ever heard of the bills was Marshall Faulk's horrible analysis of the bills who thought maybe the bills should draft a Left Tackle to upgrade their line, last I checked you usually don't need to upgrade a position if the player is a young pro bowler who can still get better, but thats just my assumption

Enter Freddy
Great point and i feel the same way! Long term Marshawn is the better player to carry the bills to the promise land. One of my favorite developments of last year was the emergence of Fred Jackson. With his emergence we know we now have a capable back to take some of the load off of Marshawn. Plus both embody real Bills fans. Marshawn is the workhorse, lunch pal kind of guy, and Freddy is the longshot. If there playing styles don't represent Buffalo i don't know what/ or who would.

I love Fred
I really do think that with Michael Turner in Atlanta, he becomes the best change of pace back in the league. With that said, if we can't get our passing game going I think it becomes a legit concern that Marshawn is being over-worked. Remember when the Dolphins ran Ricky Williams over 320+ times two years in a row. He went crazy and ran around the world smoking dope! I'm just kidding obviously but there is some cause for concern I think. Still, our running game is awesome

Oh Don't say that!
I live in Vikings country and they worship AP!  Whats amazing is how short RB's careers are.  LT had that injury last year and I bet he'll never be the same player.  Still good but not the best RB in the league like he was.

31 days is a long time to me since I have been engulfed in the draft since early Feb.  2 months of  mocks, combine, pro workouts!  I have to take a break with the March Madness tourney.

I don't know how you do it Brian to keep finding new things to talk about, but you do an excellent job.  After the SB Nation Mock and more conversing on this site, it will be interesting to see how all our predictions turn out on draft day!

I wouldn't underestimate this guy just yet.
OBD drafted him for a few reasons.  One was his character.  Now, he's got a year under his belt.  I expect a good bunch more from him, whether it be as a ST guy, or even the occassional FB role.

Maybe Wright could potentially be a FB, but my one draft prediction I'm sticking by is the bills drafting Owen Schmitt.  The guy is your blue collar all-out type of guy who would make Marshawn's job easier and could make our running game even better

I would think the 4th round
Last year Leonard was taken in the second round by the Rams, but the next fullback wasn't taken until the fourth round by the Ravens.  I hope we can wait until the 4th round to get Schmitt.
