No Comp Picks??

According to Chris Brown The Bills will most likely NOT be receiving any compensation picks. The reasoning is that The Bills didn't have a net loss of free agents. Apparently to the geniuses who figure these things out, if you lose 3 pro-bowl players, but sign 3 scrubs who you cut in training camp, then all is equal. Am I the only one who thinks that is moronic?
So lets review:

Buffalo lost London Fletcher, Nate Clements, Mike Gandy and Andre Davis in free agency.

They signed Derrick Dockery, Langston Walker, Jason Whittle and Josh Scobey.

So lets get this right NFL brain trust, Nate Clements who signed the RICHEST CONTRACT FOR A DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL, is equal to Josh Scobey. Are you serious? The Bills are going to lose out on a possible 4th round pick because they signed a guy who didn't even make the team? To me this seems like the bigger issue that the league needs to address, instead of players with long hair.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

It should be addressed....
But I don't think it is really that big of a shock. I also don't see the Clements for Scobey thing, I would say that it would be more Clements/Dockery, Fletcher/Walker, Gandy/Whittle, and Davis/Scobey.....I do think that teams should be able to get something if guys don't make the team (Scobey), but if anything I would say maybe we get a seventh, I wish that money spent would play a bigger role.

You can line it up however you want
It's not a question of who's value is equal to who. That's the point, it doesn't matter who you sign and who leaves. If you sign the same amount of free agents or more then you lose then you get no comps. Like I said If you lose 3 pro-bowlers, and sign 3 scrubs who you cut in  the pre-season, then apparently that is all square, and you would get no comps.

Comps
Are we sure that Scobey or Whittle even qualify here? Both played 3 games for the Bills last year and then were cut (Scobey) or placed on IR (Whittle).

If we do lose out on a 4th rounder because we signed Scobey, then this front office continues to confuse me.

The whole process is screwy if losing guys that START for their new team, received big contracts, and put up good stats are equivalent to a couple of scrubs who played in a handful of games for comparison purposes here.

front office confusion
You would think that they would keep in mind, that by signing Scobey they were losing a 4th rounder next year. Was he even close to worth it? I would say no.

Not even close
Scobey was a wasted signing and the fact that it may have cost us a 4th or 5th round pick is just ridiculous.  What a terrible move that is turning out to be.

I'm still not convinced Scobey or Whittle qualify based on playing time...

Playing time....
Should definitely play a major role in deciding on comp picks.

Not convinced either.
I'll believe it when I see it.  I still think playing time/contributions means something.

If it is true, and they lose a pick, alneit a later one, because of a scrub signing, then someone needs to get a smack upside the head.  That would be just absolutely terrible FO work.

Great point
I thought the same thing when I read it.  It's like they though away one of vtheb 3rd rounders they got nfor McGahee by signing Scobey.  Unreal.

We'll get picks.
Chris Brown is dumb.  Walker cancels out Fletcher, Dockery cancels Clements, Gandy started 16, Andre Davis was very valuable and signed a big contract this offseason.  We'll get a pick, but maybe not as high as a 4th as that one really smart guy predicted.

From NFL Draft Notebook
COMPENSATORY SELECTIONS:
Based on the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary and performance. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by this formula.

The line; "a team losing more or better than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks." Tells me that Brown is wrong, the key words being "More or better".

Here's the Link In case you this I copy and pasted it incorrectly.

Well
Brown wouldn't be wrong, but Jim Overdorf would be.  This obviously wouldn't surprise me since we all know how the Bills have been run the past 10-12 years.

If Overdorf is wrong and we do get some picks, what does that tell you about him and the front office?

Nothing?
It means that they're preparing for the worst. It'd be unintelligent to make draft plans based on a pick that may be stripped of you as opposed to planning, and then receiving, an additional pick.

Clearly, the NFL is the only one that really knows how this process is run, and Overdorf is just going with what he knows at this time - that the Bills currently have no extra picks. I don't understand how this is reflective on Brown's journalism, Overdorf's intelligence, or the way this franchise has been run in any way, shape or form.

That may be the case
but what's the point of Brown talking to Overdorf then?  If Overdorf thought they'd be getting picks wouldn't he have said so?  And don't you you think they would have known that signing Scobey could have an impact on the comp. picks?  Shouldn't that be something they are cognizant of?

I'm not criticizing Brown, he's just trying to answer the fans' questions.

Yes
I realize that, but I've seen "Brown is dumb" comments before and never understood them. Wasn't singling you out there.
If Overdorf thought they'd be getting picks wouldn't he have said so?

Not necessarily. He didn't have an obligation to confirm or deny; it sounds like he was just going with what he knew at the moment.

And don't you you think they would have known that signing Scobey could have an impact on the comp. picks? Shouldn't that be something they are cognizant of?

I'm sure they were aware, but why would a future compensatory selection stand in the way of the coaches trying to make their team better? Scobey was and still is a solid special teams player; no, he didn't stick on the roster, but he was worth signing anyways (or so the front office thought at the time). I completely disagree with the notion of not signing a player because you might get a comp pick the following year if you pass on him.

Scobey
I know he is a good special teams guy, but they were already keeping Haggan, Stamer, Wire, and Aiken, four guys who have shown little ability other than on Special teams. How many ST aces do you need?

The Bills knew he had little to no value as a running back, so why sign yet another ST ace who has a good chance to be left off your roster if it's going to hinder your chances at a comp pick?  I understand that you can't not sign a player that could make your team better simply because you're afraid of losing a 5th rounder. But we are talking Josh Scobey, how much better would he have made this team? I don't see him how Scobey could have had that big of an impact.

Hindsight is 20/20
I fully support signing any player that can make you team even a little better. It was a good move at the time, and I still think it was a smart signing. The fact that it didn't work out with Scobey shouldn't be a detriment to the thinking of the front office on this one. Don't forget that Scobey had kick return value as well.

You're right, I guess it's easy for me to criticize the move knowing Scobey got cut.

I still don't see how his signing can keep the Bills from getting an extra pick, thats just silly.
