No Comp Picks??
According to Chris Brown The Bills will most likely NOT be receiving any compensation picks. The reasoning is that The Bills didn't have a net loss of free agents. Apparently to the geniuses who figure these things out, if you lose 3 pro-bowl players, but sign 3 scrubs who you cut in training camp, then all is equal. Am I the only one who thinks that is moronic?
So lets review:
Buffalo lost London Fletcher, Nate Clements, Mike Gandy and Andre Davis in free agency.
They signed Derrick Dockery, Langston Walker, Jason Whittle and Josh Scobey.
So lets get this right NFL brain trust, Nate Clements who signed the RICHEST CONTRACT FOR A DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL, is equal to Josh Scobey. Are you serious? The Bills are going to lose out on a possible 4th round pick because they signed a guy who didn't even make the team? To me this seems like the bigger issue that the league needs to address, instead of players with long hair.

Comps
If we do lose out on a 4th rounder because we signed Scobey, then this front office continues to confuse me.
The whole process is screwy if losing guys that START for their new team, received big contracts, and put up good stats are equivalent to a couple of scrubs who played in a handful of games for comparison purposes here.

Not even close
I'm still not convinced Scobey or Whittle qualify based on playing time...

Not convinced either.
If it is true, and they lose a pick, alneit a later one, because of a scrub signing, then someone needs to get a smack upside the head. That would be just absolutely terrible FO work.

From NFL Draft Notebook
Based on the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary and performance. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a team is covered by this formula.
The line; "a team losing more or better than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks." Tells me that Brown is wrong, the key words being "More or better".
Here's the Link In case you this I copy and pasted it incorrectly.

Well
If Overdorf is wrong and we do get some picks, what does that tell you about him and the front office?

Nothing?
Clearly, the NFL is the only one that really knows how this process is run, and Overdorf is just going with what he knows at this time - that the Bills currently have no extra picks. I don't understand how this is reflective on Brown's journalism, Overdorf's intelligence, or the way this franchise has been run in any way, shape or form.

That may be the case
I'm not criticizing Brown, he's just trying to answer the fans' questions.

Yes
Not necessarily. He didn't have an obligation to confirm or deny; it sounds like he was just going with what he knew at the moment.
I'm sure they were aware, but why would a future compensatory selection stand in the way of the coaches trying to make their team better? Scobey was and still is a solid special teams player; no, he didn't stick on the roster, but he was worth signing anyways (or so the front office thought at the time). I completely disagree with the notion of not signing a player because you might get a comp pick the following year if you pass on him.

Scobey
The Bills knew he had little to no value as a running back, so why sign yet another ST ace who has a good chance to be left off your roster if it's going to hinder your chances at a comp pick? I understand that you can't not sign a player that could make your team better simply because you're afraid of losing a 5th rounder. But we are talking Josh Scobey, how much better would he have made this team? I don't see him how Scobey could have had that big of an impact.

I still don't see how his signing can keep the Bills from getting an extra pick, thats just silly.
