Building a Roster a Numbers Game, Too

Parrish & Co. need running mates at wideout (BuffaloBills.com)

With the 2008 NFL Draft taking place literally two weeks from today, draft chatter is taking place at a more frequent pace than ever. In the case of the Buffalo Bills, we have already ironed out the team's biggest needs heading into the draft. But this time of the year is more than about building a winning team - it's about putting together a roster with proper numbers that will allow a team to best put together a 53-man roster come September.

How influential is the "training camp roster" (size: 80) on the draft-day process? Clearly it's not close to being the biggest factor considered when a selection is made, but where the Bills are lacking severely in numbers - and they have positions in that precise situation - could dictate how many players the Bills choose at each position. So where are the Bills lacking in numbers? There are four positions that need at least three more players just to match last year's total; two of them may surprise you.

Buffalo's Biggest Numbers Needs
The two most likely positions to be addressed in the first round of this year's draft for the Bills are wide receiver and cornerback - and, not surprisingly, these two positions are where the Bills need numbers help the most. The Bills currently only have six receivers on their roster, but went into training camp with eleven receivers last year. That disparity of five has not resulted in much of a talent drop-off for the position, but depth is a huge concern simply heading into training camp. Likewise, the Bills had nine cornerbacks on the roster last July/August, but currently only have five. That means the team is out four corners, and they need to add at least three to fill out the training camp roster.

The other two positions that are short on numbers? Linebacker and running back. The Bills currently carry six linebackers on their roster, but entered training camp with ten last year. The team has solid, experienced depth with their top five players, but beyond that, there is Blake Costanzo. The team needs to add two or three bodies there to make it out of camp healthy. Similarly, the Bills kept six running backs on the training camp roster last year (not to mention five on the opening day roster). That number has dwindled to three on the current roster. It seems likely that the Bills will explore adding two running backs prior to training camp - and one of those could come in the draft.

Buffalo's Smallest Numbers Needs
Not surprisingly, there are also positions on Buffalo's roster where depth is nearly as sufficient as it was during last year's training camp. These positions aren't necessarily "non-need" positions come draft day, but the team has players at these positions. Tight end/fullback tops the list - the Bills, employing an H-Back in last year's offense, carried just five tight ends and halfbacks on the roster last year. That number, now split between two positions (tight end and fullback), has increased to seven. Clearly, the Bills still need help (athletic help) at the position, but in terms of numbers, they're nearly set for training camp.

The offensive and defensive lines are in excellent shape numbers-wise as well. The Bills currently employ twelve offensive linemen, as opposed to fourteen last summer. The team also employs two fewer defensive linemen (13 compared to 15), but that likely has to do with the fact that the team bolstered their DE depth last summer after the injury to Ryan Denney. The team is nearly set in terms of numbers at those positions as well.

Draft-Day Impact?
What do these number crunches tell us? Probably not much, especially when it comes to the early portions of draft day, where the Bills still need depth at key positions. But numbers always play an important role in building a roster, and that's especially true on Day Two of the draft, as well as the free agent signing period immediately following the draft. And the Bills do have several positions where bodies are needed before training camp.

So when the Bills draft a running back or a linebacker or two - despite popular perception that the Bills are sufficiently deep at those positions - don't be shocked. That's the Bills playing a numbers game. Two cornerbacks, two wide receivers, a linebacker (or two) and a running back are not out of the realm of possibility for the Bills. These are important facts to keep in mind before we ask why the team didn't draft a center in two weeks.

No center
in the 3rd round is likely, but no center period would be dissappointing.  Until Edwards proves he can stretch the field, we will have 8 plus in the box and be blitzed without mercy.  Fowler is not up to the task.  Without an upgrade at center, the run game will not improve and the pass game will suffer because our new pass catching TE will be forced to help block.  That leaves Evans and a rookie WR to make plays.  At the very least, we need someone to push Fowler to get better.

Center was just an example :)
I didn't mean that the team actually won't draft a center. Please don't misunderstand me there. You could put any position in there that fans have on their minds - center, fullback, defensive tackle - but we can't draft everything.

Also wanted to address one of your points:

Until Edwards proves he can stretch the field, we will have 8 plus in the box and be blitzed without mercy.

If you're getting blitzed without mercy, the answer is not to stretch the field, or throw downfield. You set up the screen and get the ball quickly to your YAC receivers. We already have a YAC running back with Marshawn, and if we add a guy like Devin Thomas, it helps Trent even more. That's how you defeat the blitz.

Maybe a full out blitz
but not necesarily a zone blitz.  Screens are good plays, but can't be your only choice. And, if you can pick up the blitz, you have more time; thus more options like a mid range crossing route or time enough to see if the fly pattern has developed.

Getting Blitzed versus Defeating the Blitz
If defenses do not feel like they will be challenged or threatened downfield, they will crowd the line of scrimmage or "the box".  Defenses are also more likely to blitz.

As for defeating the blitz, I wouldn't say that throwing short, quick passes and screens is the only answer.  That may help defeat the blitz, but it won't prevent defenses from choking the line of scrimmage and stopping the running game and the short passing game.  Depending on the play, it doesn't take as long to throw downfield as some people may think.  And if you complete passes downfield, defenses will back off (and become more vulnerable to attack in other areas).

A lot of things like this are going to depend on the quarterback.  We'll soon find out what Edwards can do.

How good do you want the Bills to be?

Late round/FA RB options
Geez, i haven't been thinking about RBs at all... but if we had to get one in the 7th or FA... here are some options from both the Thunder and Lightning sides

LATE ROUND THUNDER REQ:

  1. Size and power
  2. Inside running skill, hard to tackle
  3. Patient, then hits hole hard
Chauncey Washington-USC (5'11,211,4.45) - runs with power, pure inside runner - Hidden jem b/c: he's basically illiterate and has poor intangibles.

Ryan Torain-AzSt (6'1,222,4.64) - runs with power, very hard to tackle, great size and great blocker.  Hidden jem b/c: was sidelined with injury in 07 and also has one of the worse OLs in the NCAA.

LATE ROUND LIGHTNING REQ:

  1. Elusiveness and great vision
  2. Inside running experience, durability
  3. Can catch
Mike Hart-Mich (5'9,206,4.67) - can't tackle this guy, fights for extra yards, inside runner from a pro offense. Great intangibles Hidden jem b/c: combine speed very poor and size issues.

Justin Forsett-CAL (5'8,194,4.64) - shifty, plays fast, hits the hole fast and takes it upfield without stopping feet, very durable and inside runner from a pro offense. Great senior bowl.  Hidden jem b/c: combine speed very poor and size issues. [Added bonus: great chemistry with Marshawn and are great friends, meaning keeping ML happy in Buffalo]

Anthony Alridge-Hou (5'9,170,4.36) - haven't seen much film on this guy, but via youtube seems very dangerous in open field. Hidden jem b/c: needs to bulk up and played in a spread offense.

Danny Woodhead-Chadron St. (5'8,197,4.38
)
- Just kidding... i don't want this kid. Sure he holds the all time NCAA rushing record (2756yrd,8yrd/carry,34TDs) but he plays at Chadron St!!! Most of the guys above had to deal w/ the LB cores of USC, OregonSt, OhioSt and PennSt... who has this kid played against... let someone else take a chance on him.

Late round lightning
I'd rather the Bills use one of the sevenths on a running back with an opposite skill-set than the ones already on the roster.  If they could pick someone up like Amhad Bradshaw late in the draft, it would add another dimension or weapon to the offense.  Bradshaw was huge for the Giants last year during their run.

agree
exactly... that's why i like Anthony Alridge... my prob is that i haven't seen this guy play so I can't offer good insight... hopefully others will chime in to tell us if he could be a good fit... i watch big10, SEC and pac10... but as for Conf USA.. i'm pretty clueless about the talent there.

Agree
Don't need another inside runner.  That's all we have on the roster right now. We need a speed back with playmaking ability if we decide to add a RB.

I like Chad Simpson from Morgan State. 4.4 speed at 215 lbs. Would be a nice 7th rounder and could help on ST at the very least....

chad simpson
Kurupt, you seemed to be hooked on this Simpson kid.. who is he?

by osmanBAE on Apr 12, 2008 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Simpson
I've obviously never seen him play as he went to Morgan State, but after reading up on him and seeing some highlights, I like his potential. He's got very good speed, adequate size, is pretty shifty and has kick return ability.  As a 7th rounder, he'd be a very nice pick.  I also like him as opposed to some other later round RB's because of his speed. There aren't very many RB's after the top 5-6 that have breakaway speed, but this kid does, and that's something I think needs to be added to our RB trio if we do add someone.

Here's some highlights

Small colleges
The Bills are still the only team to have drafted a player from Chadron State, right?

Don't forget, Fred Jackson came from a small college... and he didn't face many NFL-quality linebackers until last year.

by Krenn on Apr 12, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

really?
Who did we draft from Chadron state?  I threw in Woodhead in there as a semi-joke. What a coincidence.

Freddie went to Coe?!  Just found that out. True Freddie didn't run against top defenses, but i think your adjustment to NFL speed is much smoother if you do (although Freddie was awesome in Miami)...plus we all tend to respect your career numbers better...eg..

Danny Woodhead rushed for 7900+yrds, 7yrd/carry and 101TDs making him the most prolific rusher of all time.. however, he wasn't even a finalist for the DOak Walker award during his best season (2006)... McFadden won the award and Woodhead was snubbed.

That would be one Don Beebe.
