SBNation NFL Mock Draft, Round Two: Bills On The Clock

Hosted at Mocking the Draft

OK, fellow Rumblers - the time is now for y'all to put on your GM hats and enter the war room. The Buffalo Bills are once again on the clock in the 2008 SB Nation NFL Mock Draft, and just like in the first round, this community will be making the team's second-round selection. In case you missed it, our first-round pick was Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly (and yes, the selection was submitted before he bombed his Pro Day April 9).

Selections 1-37 are viewable at the host site of the mock draft, while picks 38-40 have been made "behind the scenes". Here are the five players that we'll be choosing from in this round; if you don't like this list, feel free to add names in the comments section.

(Note: Virginia Tech CB Brandon Flowers has been left off of this list because I believe that there is a 99% chance that the Ravens will take him with pick 38 this evening. Similarly, I believe that there's a strong chance that DE Quentin Groves and LB Jerod Mayo will be off the board as well.)

James Hardy, WR, Indiana: Hardy makes this list in case any of you want to take another WR due to Kelly's monumentally disastrous Pro Day. Hardy is one of four receivers I feel can come in and start in the NFL from day one, and he has the size/red zone skills that the Bills covet. He'd be solid insurance in the event that Kelly flops as our first-round pick.

Martellus Bennett, TE, Texas A&M: Tight end is a strong possibility for the Bills in round two, and thus I am including two tight ends in this voting process. Bennett will be our "all-around" prospect. He's a solid blocker and has fantastic size (6'6") and speed (4.68). That, combined with his background as a basketball player, makes him a dangerous threat in the red zone. Bennett needs a little polish, but he could develop into one of the better starting tight ends in the league relatively early in his career.

Dustin Keller, TE, Purdue: Keller will be our "receiving tight end" prospect in this vote. He's not a complete player and needs some polish himself, but there is no finer athlete at the tight end position in this draft. His athleticism is so excellent that he could be lined up in the slot as a third receiver or lined up in the backfield. Tight ends with his athleticism are rare, though it's questionable if he'd ever be more than a niche player, similar to Washington's Chris Cooley.

Patrick Lee, CB, Auburn: One of the fastest risers this off-season, Lee has terrific size (6'0", 200 pounds), plays a physical brand of football, and is athletic enough to play in any defense. His style of play is best suited to a Tampa 2, however. He, like most other corners considered here, is a bit raw and does not exit college with much starting experience. But the Bills need depth at corner in a bad way, and Lee could develop into a fine starter without having pressure on him to start from Day One.

Charles Godfrey, CB, Iowa: Godfrey is essentially the same player as Lee: physical, athletically gifted, and very raw at the corner position. He played safety until 2006 before switching to corner, so he could be viewed as an alternate safety option for the Bills, who like to mix and match defensive backs.

Again, these are not the only 5 players y'all can choose from. As I mentioned earlier, names like Flowers, Groves and Mayo have been purposely left out because it is my opinion that any or all of them could be gone by the 41st selection. If you click "Entry Link", you'll be forwarded to a poll. Feel free to vote for any of the five prospects mentioned here, and definitely feel free to vote "Other" and submit an alternate name. The pick will be announced tomorrow evening at about 8PM Eastern, but I'd like to get as many votes/comments in on this selection before tomorrow morning so we can keep the mock flowing as smoothly as possible. So strap your GM hats on, Bills fans, and make your pick!

Let me just say
This pick must go either WR or TE, because we got stuck with the snail in round 1. I'll say Bennett even though I like Fred Davis better, because to be honest, I think both would be quality picks.

I like TE at #2
Is Rucker still available?  I think he's the best TE out there

I voted other
because if Flowers is around that would be amazing

whoops
just saw that you wrote in small print that Flowers has a 99% chance of being gone. If he's not, we should take him.

Flowers is gone
The Ravens took him.

IMHO, that leaves our pick as Keller. Keller is the best player available at a position of need that fits in well with Schonert's offensive scheme. The Bills absolutely need a receiving tight end once their WR needs are filled. Keller will be to Edwards what Metzelaars was to Jim Kelly.

James Hardy
I'm going to assume Flowers was taken with one of the last couple picks, otherwise he would be an obvious candidate.

I think Hardy and Jerod Mayo are the best two prospects available and either one would be a great pick.  I would choose Hardy and really attack the Bills biggest need.  My selection wouldn't be at all related to my dislike of Kelly.  This wouldn't be a "makeup pick" or anything like that.

I think both CBs listed are bad value here.  I hope the Bills consider a CB in the first round because I expect a similiar run on CBs to occur before the Bills pick on the real draft.

I think a good TE could fall through the cracks and be available in the third round.  I don't think the dropoff between Bennett and Carlson or Cottam is enough to warrant the Bills passing on a talent like Hardy or Mayo in the second round.

CB in the first round
Just wondering...

Do you think the Bills like DRC at all?  I would love it if they get DRC, but I don't see the Bills going in that direction.

How good do you want the Bills to be?

my board...
  1.  Flowers (CB)
  2.  Bennett (TE)
  3.  Keller (TE)
  4.  Groves (DE)
  5.  Lee (CB)
  6.  Mayo (LB)
  7.  Godfry (CB)
Leaving hardy off the list because we picked WR in round 1 and because of his character issues

So Far
I'd at this point go Cason, then Bennett (or their TE choice). This has to be the TE pick to get a good one. I'm Bennett, Keller. Either one a significant upgrade. Here's hoping Jordy is there in the 3rd.

Re: Corners
Cason went #22 overall to Dallas, and Flowers, as predicted, just went #38 overall to Baltimore. See? Sometimes I'm right... :)

So corner is looking out at this point.

Fred Davis?
Where is Fred Davis on your list? He is still considered the top prospect by many scouts and his college productivity is quite good.

I'd rank them...
  1. Bennett
  2. Keller
  3. Tracy Porter
  4. Mayo
  5. Fred Davis

Id definitly go Bennett,
A complete package is what this team needs, but I wouldnt be upset if Keller was the choice either.  Lining Bennett up with Royal is a dream come true.  I know Royal is known for his blocking skills, but he made some decent important catches over the last few years.  Add in Bennett and now we have an element of suprise.
Do you BILLieve?

Hardy
As I said in other post.  Hardy is the best WR in the draft for the Bills.  I truly believe he is the best player to pair with Evans speed, as he is just phenominal in the red zone.  Having Hardy and Kelly would take your biggest weakness which is WR and make it a position of strength.  You can follow it up in round 3 with a DE or TE.  I believe CB could use the help but in my opinion any CB you bring in from round 2 on will probably be your 5th CB.  If you dont take a CB in Round 1 who is elite you can wait until your second pick in round 4 or round 5 to take a CB.  If this was the situation I go Kelly, Hardy, best TE/DE in round 3.

Again with Kelly's pro day this is all unrealistic but still fun to do.

Would anyone be apposed
to the Bills taking two WR's in consecutive rounds?  I think Kelly could actually play the slot.

depends what rounds
if you mean 1/2 yeah I would have a little problem there, if you mean 2/3 or even 3/4 no that would be fine.

no problem here
but i would prefer it only if McKelvin was gone at 11 or Flowers and Cason were gone at 41.

Martellus Bennett
is the choice to go with here.  He has as much chance of making an impact on this offense as a rookie WR, but here Bennett gets the nod over Keller because of his size.  Can you say "red zone threat"?  Plus, he has a chance to develop into a better blocker than Keller.  Martellus likely won't be as good as Pete Metzalaars was as a blocker, but he'll add a dimension to the Bill's passing attack that's been missing for a long, long, time.  Cornerback can still wait 'til Round 3...
Get the Bills back to the big game!

Give me
Fred Davis.  I know most of you don't like him for whatever reasons but he would stretch the field and have instant impact.  He runs the best Post Route out of any TE in this draft, bar none.  Tape doesn't lie.  Plus he has hands to go grad balls in the clouds.  Sure he is not a "complete" TE, but taking Bennet or Keller and you are not getting the ELITE pass-catching threat that you would in Davis

Freddie D
I really like Davis also, Brian and I disagree there, he likes Bennett. I must say that I like them both, but think that Davis will be just a smidge better.

I don't dislike Davis
I just don't think he excels at one thing. He's not the best blocker in this draft, nor is he the best athlete (by far), nor is he the best pure pass-catcher. He's a very good tight end, but I just believe that Bennett and Keller are better options depending on which way the team wants to go. I would NOT be disappointed if the team drafted Fred Davis.

O.K. now I'm confused
I got that impression during our chat the other day  on my draft tek post. I thought I might have misinterpreted something.
There's not enough at receiver there. I don't like Fred Davis, either.

That seemed to be where I was getting confused, but then I read this:

I would be happier if the pick were Bennett over Davis, yet. I still wouldn't find it ideal, but it's far more acceptable. Davis has been overrated all off-season, and I really don't want to see him in a Bills uniform.

Thats where I got the idea that you didn't like him.

Me and my words
To set the record straight: I don't mind Fred Davis, but I don't have him in my top three tight ends available, either (that's Bennett, Carlson and Keller). I would not cry myself to sleep if the Bills draft Davis, but I would much prefer one of those other three guys being in Buffalo.

I gotcha now
To me Davis is probably at least 2nd if not first I would put Davis as 1a and Bennett as 1b, Keller and Carlson both have their faults but I could live with either.

I like Davis.....
Production doesn't lie.  I want a TE who can catch and run smooth routes.  To me a good pass catching TE will open the offense up more for the Bills in the 08 campaign than one of the WR's taken in round 2 that may not make a good #2 WR. I wouldn't even mind the bills trading back up into round 2 for a WR.
Would you rather win one superbowl or Lose four in a row? Which defines your teams place in history more ... 1yr wonder or Perennially 2nd best?

On the clock
As the Saints take LB Jared Mayo of Tennessee (who we almost certainly weren't going to pick anyway. Are the poll results final? Brian, will you override the poll and pick someone else?

didn't know this was a real poll
In that case, I'd put my money on a TE in the 2nd. I really like Rucker b/c he's like another WR out there... between Rucker, Davis and Keller... i think they all stink at blocking, but is that what we need or do we need someone that can streak up the middle and catch everything?...

I'm going with hands... which for me would be Davis or Keller... and between them I have to go with Davis b/c he played in a pro-style offense while Keller played in a spread.

My pick: Fred Davis (USC)
