Building a Roster a Contract Game, Too

Crowell scheduled for free agency in 2009 (BuffaloBills.com)

With the 2008 NFL Draft taking place less than two weeks from today, draft chatter is taking place at a more frequent pace than ever. In the case of the Buffalo Bills, we have already ironed out the team's biggest needs heading into the draft. But this time of year is more than about building a winning team - it's about planning for the future, as well. No, we're not talking about player age - we did that yesterday - instead, we're talking about contracts.

Over the next two years (2008-09 and 09-10), the Bills have several key starters and depth players who are scheduled to become restricted or unrestricted free agents. Whether or not the Bills plan on making an attempt to re-sign these players, their uncertain futures after a year or two may force the Bills to build an unusual amount of depth at those positions. Here's a breakdown of prominent free agents - starters and key reserves alike - over the next two seasons:

2009 Free Agents
FB Darian Barnes, UFA - Signed to a one-year contract this past January.

LB Angelo Crowell, UFA - Buffalo's most experienced and productive linebacker is entering the final year of his deal. Strong chance the team will try to re-sign him.

LB John DiGiorgio, RFA - One of the Bills' best reserve players and special teamers, if DiGiorgio sees significant (productive) playing time in 2008, the Bills will tender him high and keep him in town. Could become a fan favorite.

LB Keith Ellison, RFA - Top reserve weak-side linebacker with starting experience. That's tough to find in a third-year player.

WR Lee Evans, UFA* - Evans is technically signed through the 2010 season, but has an option to opt out of the final year - an option he'll certainly take advantage of. He's the "big" name on this list.

C Melvin Fowler, UFA - Widely regarded as the weak link on an otherwise stellar Bills O-Line.

CB Jabari Greer, UFA - Signed a 2-year contract for '07 and '08. If he continues to start this coming season, he'll want a bigger deal next off-season.

QB J.P. Losman, UFA - Despite his trade demands, it looks like Losman will be spending '08 as Trent Edwards' backup. He'll then walk as a 2009 free agent.

OG Duke Preston, UFA - Young reserve with starting experience, but comes from an era of poor line play in Buffalo.

OG Jason Whittle, UFA - Signed a one-year deal this past March. Oldest player on the roster (33).

2010
OG Brad Butler - 2006 5th-round pick signed a four-year deal that expires after 2009. Entrenched himself as starting right guard for foreseeable future.

DE Ryan Denney - Four-year deal signed in 2006. At age 30 and recovering from a serious foot injury, Denney may be playing out his final Bills contract.

CB William James - The newest Buffalo Bill, signed within the past month, is working on a two-year deal.

CB Terrence McGee - Will be 29 when his current deal expires. Four-year starter in Buffalo.

WR Josh Reed - Signed a four-year deal prior to 2006 season. Slot receiver in Buffalo since his career started in 2002.

TE Robert Royal - Signed a four-year deal prior to 2006 season. Will be 31 by the time his contract expires.

FS Ko Simpson - 2006 starter may not regain that role after serious ankle injury to start '07. If he's a reserve when his contract expires, he's almost certainly a goner.

DT Kyle Williams - Another 2006 draft pick whose four-year deal expires in 2010. He joins OG Butler, S Simpson and CB Youboty (see below). Keith Ellison belongs on this list as well.

CB Ashton Youboty - Once thought of as the future replacement to Nate Clements, Youboty has struggled with injuries and family issues in trying to get playing time. May not get a second contract in Buffalo.

The Big Decisions
Clearly, the biggest decisions the Bills face right away are decisions on contract extensions for Lee Evans and Angelo Crowell. But the big decisions don't stop there. The team has four interior offensive linemen (Fowler, Whittle, Preston, Butler) hitting free agency over the next two years, so something clearly needs to be done there. Add linebacker to the list, where the RFA status of both Ellison and DiGiorgio does nothing to ease the mind if Crowell is let go. Cornerback is a clear problem area too, where all four of the team's top corners are set to become free agents over the next two years.

This is how business operates in today's NFL. There is no guarantee that the Bills will be able to re-sign a quarter of the 19 key players listed above. With ten draft picks this year - and the probability of trading down higher than ever - it's time to start planning for the eventual loss of most of these players.

Resignings
I'll stay way from discussing Evans and Crowell for now.

As far as the O-Line goes, lets face it, the only one we should be worried about is Butler.
-Whittle could be re-signed if we want him next year, he's singed for the vet minimum for Pete's sake.
-Fowler could possibly lose his job this year to a rookie (if everything goes as we here plan it anyway), so to lose him isn't damaging.
-Preston... I'll be honest, sometimes I forget he's even on the team. Again he could lose his job to a rookie, and I don't think it's a stretch to say that his replacement could even already be on the roster. (Christian Gaddis anybody.)

The only player on this list that I would say is even close to a priority (other than Evans and Crowell) is McGee. Greer maybe but that depends on what they do in the draft and what the staff thinks of Youboty.

I like DiGi, and and Williams and would like to see them extended but really I don't think I'll lose sleep if they don't.

Evans
im confused as to how he is technically signed through the 2010 season

by The Buffalonian on Apr 14, 2008 10:01 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

His deal
runs through 2010. He is scheduled to make $1.2 million in 2009, but it's written into his contract that he can void the deal after the 2008 season, making himself an unrestricted free agent heading into 2009.

Evans
It is hard to determine the market value for either.

I love Evans, and I think he is a good WR and can be great. I think you roll the dice, see if this year, with a hopefully better option on the other side, and better offensive production overall you see if he makes the big stride we need.
If that is the case, and we see 90 rec and 10-15 TDs (can you imagine?) then give him the big Fitz money or whatever else he wants. He can be a Harrison type WR and we need that stability at a top skill position.
BUT, I say not till next year or during this season. If they work something out before then fine, but again, it is hard to rate his market value in my opinion by stats alone. Last year was off, for everyone on the O so gain, hard to say.

The Bills can win every game

Thats a duel edged sword my freind
Options:
-Give Evans a big contract now (maybe a little more then what Berrian got) and hope he turns into a perennial pro-bowler.
-Wait a year and he flops, then you can sign him for less (if you still want him)
-Wait a year and watch him blossom, then have to pay him even bigger money and hope that somebody else doesn't give him an even better deal.
-Wait a year, watch him blossom, and then franchise him.

If the Bills wait it could bite them, the question is, do the Bills gamble or not?

Gamble
I'd take the wait and see approach. If he flops then we can look at Crabtree coming out next year.If he doesn't flop then he gets his payday.

Evans
The Bills should take the gamble on Evans now. The cap number is only going to keep going higher, and 2010 might even be uncapped. So, better to lock him up now. He has plenty of talent, he's shown it since his rookie year. We saw what he could do with Moulds on the other side. And we also saw in 2007 what he did with no real threat on the other side, but consistency at QB. I think he's answered all of our questions. I don't think he'll ever be top 5 material, but at worst he's a #1A wideout in this league. Nothing wrong with that, especially if we get a reliable possession guy, and red zone specialist, opposite from him.

Take it
I'd gamble to extend Evans ASAP if it was me.  He's too valuable too let him walk.  Can you imagine what the WR position would look like without Evans? <shudder>

Butler, Crowell, and McGee should also be extended/resigned.  The rest of them (with the possible exception of Greer & DiGiorgio) should be allowed to walk...

Get the Bills back to the big game!

Big Names
In addition to Evans and Crowell, should Jason Peters get a new contract if he continues to perform at the same level or better?

Such is the way of life in the modern era NFL (in general, I'm not pointing fingers).  Money crazy.  As soon as one player gets paid, every other player at the same position becomes "underpaid" and wants a new deal.  Essentially, every contract is a 1-year contract.  Ridiculous.

How good do you want the Bills to be?

Peters
is under contract through 2011 at modest, but not cheap, salary. If he looks for a new deal, my guess is it won't be for another year or two. And it's a big "if" in the first place.

CB
This kind of makes me feel the dire need for a CB.  With McGee in his prime and his deal up in 2010, a CB that will be ready to take over if we don't resign him in 2010 needs to be there.  If Youboty isn't that guy, we need him.  Making Cason, or whatever CB they love a greater than 50% possibility at #11 in my humble opinion.
